Thanks for your interest in music lessons! I've been teaching since 1996 and can offer feedback from current and past students, all ages.
Reading is optional for adults but everyone learns ear training to make hearing and playing music easier. For kids, reading music notation is not pushed immediately but ... it is an eventuality.
We play songs the student likes so practice is fun & more self-motivated! Students learn faster when they play songs that they enjoy, so song selection is mutual, not just for the teacher.
I currently give music lessons for voice/singing, guitar/bass, piano/keyboard, drums/percussion, harmonica, ukulele and mandolin. I can also advise students re: buying an instrument.
Students here are not obligated to sign anything or to purchase a minimum number of lessons. For some it's a convenience but students are free to pay per individual lesson if preferred. Also I am very forgiving with cancellations because our studio is right next door to where we live. Instead of the common 24hr. notice requirement, I only need 15min. notice before the actual lesson time because I know things happen sometimes at the last minute.
Lessons are discounted for Thumbtack leads at only $20/30min. or $40/hr. here at our studio in Sugar Land. House calls are $70/hr.
We're located in Sugar Land 77478 near the Imperial Sugar building off Hwy 90 & Bayview. We have a high ceiling room with a nice waterfront view, extensive library for any style of music, indoor and outdoor waiting areas with TV & free WiFi and a park across the street as well.
It's something I love to do, of course!
Music is super fun. By always trying to make the lessons as fun as possible, students don't even realize they're learning half the time.
My younger students keep me current on what is currently popular / on the radio.
Close to home.
I love watching students evolve, going from nothing to performing in front of others. If the band comes together then watch out. Also, playing music is a skill that stays with you throughout your life (if you want it to).
When you teach several different instruments, it keeps things fresh. Variety is one of music's best qualities.
