Paul Sorenson says, "We couldnt be more pleased with our backyard project! From the very beginning, the planning process was excellent. Doug, the foreman, provided outstanding leadership and guidance, while Greg brought incredible vision through detailed 3D landscaping plans. Greg not only helped transform our waterfall into a natural, stunning focal point, but also shaped the paver design in a way that added an extra touch of beauty we hadnt even imagined. The paver installation was seamless and impressive, with precise cuts around boulders and curved areas. Luiz and his crew were equally fantastic, carefully placing each boulder in the waterfall to maximize both the sound and the visual impact. Dougs knowledge of plants and trees was invaluable, helping us choose the right mix for the look and feel we wanted. While Allstate came in a little higher than some of our other bids, the quality of the work and peace of mind that comes with hiring an established, reputable company made it well worth it. They were also reliable about follow-up and fixing any issues that came up.Communication on timing and some details wasnt always perfect, but everything was always corrected promptly. Having gone through construction and remodel projects, my 5-star ratings come down to one question: did the final result exceed expectations? In this case, its an enthusiastic YESthe backyard turned out even better than we imagined."See more

Lee K. says, "Hector from HMR was awarded my bid for repairing my sprinklers. My large lawn in my back yard was in really bad shape. My bid had stated that in wanted my sprinklers to reach every blade of grass. Hector provided a bid that listed the type of equipment that he planned to install. He also listed pricing for individual sprinkler parts to cover any issues that weren’t discovered during his initial evaluation of what needed to be done. The day that Hectors came out to repair my sprinklers, he arrived on time. The repair took over five hours to complete. When Hector finished, he had me follow him around the lawn and showed me what he had done. It looked amazing. He showed me that each blade of grass was receiving much needed water. Hector went to the sprinkler head box and made adjustments and to the days to be watered and the length of time each sprinkler would be watered. Finally,, Hector made arrangements to call me in two weeks to see how the lawn was doing. He said that he would come and make adjustments if needed. HMR is a reputable company that’s honest in dealing with its customers. Hector didn’t pad his bid with things I didn’t need. I have no qualms about using HMR for other landscaping needs that may arise in the future. Thanks Hector!"See more

FAQs

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Whether you rototill before laying sod depends on your preference, but your ground needs to be prepared for the sod to take root in the soil. A rototiller makes it easy to till up compacted earth so that new sod can easily take hold, but there are other methods you can do. Consult with a sodding professional to discuss which preparation steps should take place before laying sod.

Landscapers and sod installation specialists can lay sod. When choosing a professional to lay sod in your yard, read their ratings and reviews from customers. Also, search for photos that showcase actual work done by the pro. And always get cost estimates from several sodding professionals so you can get an idea of how much you should pay for their services.

Sod can be laid any time of the year, though the best time to do so is in the spring or early fall. During this time, temperatures are cooler but grass is still growing.

Summer isn’t ideal for laying sod (but still possible), as the high temperatures demand extra watering that can not only drive up your water bill. It can also make conditions ideal for mold and fungi.

There are differing opinions about this topic, which is why you should talk to a sodding professional near you to find out if it’s possible to lay sod over your particular lawn. In some cases, it might be possible. For example, some professionals say the new sod will kill the existing grass underneath and release nutrients that will benefit the new sod.

However, others believe the old grass will disrupt the sod's ability to take root in the soil, and it will die due to a lack of nutrients.

The national average cost to install sod is around $2,235 and prices typically range from $1,311-$3,808*, according to Thumbtack data. The type of sod you choose, your lawn size, and many other factors can impact how much you'll pay for sodding services.
