Apo and his guys are awesome! He came out and gave us a bid on Monday and got the job done on Wed. We have a very large globe willow in our front and back yard. The one in the front had a bad infestation and worried us that another section was going to fall on our house or someone's car. We had him remove a large section of the tree in front and majorly thin out the tree in the back. They got the job done in an afternoon and raked up all of the leave in our front and back yard and hauled off about 40 buckets of gravel we removed from the yard earlier this year. We are very happy with the service they provided. We originally received bids from 3 contractors, including Apo, and although he was not the cheapest, we felt the best about him due to his personality and professionalism...and he comprised and reduced his cost a bit to be more competitive. We would definitely recommend him and his company to anyone needing tree or landscaping services and may even use him again spring to help us landscape our back yard.

I am impressed with Duvall Construction's creativity and quality of work. Our balcony was a safety hazard, but we didn't yet have enough money to replace it completely. They arranged to remove the old balcony, at an affordable rate, and replaced it with a porch, to be added to a new balcony in the future.

As soon as I posted on Thumbtack my phone started dinging. Israel was the first one to call and the second one to bid. He gave a good price and when I asked when he could do the job he said "today, I'll go get my dump truck and my crew." Not kidding 45 minutes later they were doing a demolition job. He had four guys on his crew. They were all friendly and seemed to enjoy knocking down walls! I would totally recommend them for demolition. They got the job done before dark and did a great job of cleaning up afterwards. It's kind of funny, the first guy who bid just sent me his estimate a few minutes ago and the job is already done. I had a 3rd guy scheduled for an estimate at 2 which I cancelled because they were already 3 hours into the job. It was great that he was able to bring his own dump truck so there was no renting a trash container.

From the beginning of our remodel to the end, Crown Services Group displayed upmost professionalism. Their knowledge of the finer points of kitchen remodel, combined with great sensitivity to detail, helped me bring my ideas to life! Our SLC vacation home is complete. Other contractors I've worked with have been great in some areas, but Crown has perfected all of them. My kitchen is perfect- we will definitely be returning customers. Thank you, Crown Services Group!

The job was a total remodeling of a large townhouse(3600 sf), under limited time. It is in a popular ski area, and it was getting close to a new season opening. It needed to be finished before the snow fall. Therefore, it was hard to assemble a team of skilled professionals as they were in high demand to finish every project in town before the season would start. Brian and Jami (co-Ownwers of Blue Sky) took this hard task with an very professional attitude, created a team of very good and hard working sub-contractors, and achieved amazing job together. I lived out of state from the job site, and I had to fully rely on Blue Sky. Though, they kept me informed in every step of the remodel, communicated extensively by text, photos, email, and phone calls, which made me fully confident with theim. I, myself, am also a designer, and understood the time pressure and tough situation of logistics they had. The impressive thing was that they not only achieved the good construction but also paid very personal attention to every detail ,and cared about my benefit first throughout the project. They had a very positive attitude, and solved every usual and unusual problem that arised, very well and creatively. They had an amazing people skill, which was a big plus to have kept everyone involved going with a smile, and going out of his/her way to finish his/her part. I have a deep appreciation for their and their team's work and contribution. Project was done before the snow fall, came out beautifully beyond what I imagined. I highly recommend Blue Sky if you want creative professional who pays attention to detail, put your interest first, and make your life easier. They have certainly made my remote operation stress free. I would also like to add that they also offer property management and beyond. They have found me a very good renter and took care of all relating to the lease process. A very helpful, "one stop takes care of everything" company. They are flexible to your need to come up with solutions. On top of that, the new tenant was so impressed with their beautiful remodel work, so they hired them to decorate their new home, and manage their other properties.

Tony came in and went above and beyond for me. I hired him to do some demolition work and he didn't just come in and tear it all out, he came in and carefully removed everything from our apartment. The place actually looks pretty immaculate considering we just destroyed everything. He's an honest guy that I will very likely work with again.

Sam did an awesome job. He was very quick (3 weeks from first bid to project completion). Best thing was his communication was excellent. It's hard to get someone who communicates well and often and Sam was great. The only knock I'd have is that there were some spots where cleanup wasn't the best (spilled concrete on the lawn in a few places). Overall a great experience and I'd recommend him to anyone. I'd use him again for sure.

John came right away to give us a quote on rebuilding our bathroom. We'd had to tear it out as part of a larger repair. He had great ideas for redoing the space that we hadn't even considered. Within 2 days of accepting his bid, John had people here working. He has kept us informed of what was happening each day throughout the project. Any time we have a question or need something changed, he responds right away. We have been thrilled with everything about working with John. This was our first experience hiring a contractor - we've always tried to do it ourselves. We will definitely hire him again in the future for other projects. The room turned out beautiful and we are more than happy with it.

Aaron was always really helpful, thoroughly professional, and quick to respond to our emails and texts. We knew that it was his goal to make sure we were happy with the results. The quote they gave us for our exterior renovation was very reasonable, and they stuck with it. The quality of the contractor work was first-rate. Couldn't be happier with the end result.

Manny has been a great contractor for my remodeling project. He has taken my husband under his wing teaching him about construction while he works alongside him. Our project would be at a standstill if it wasn't for this company's willingness to do work on any type of remodeling project.

A-1 Abatement crew tore down my garage which was in a tight location between 2 houses. They brought a bobcat to tear it down and a trailer to haul it off. Nice guys. They swept up and left the place as clean as possible.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

  • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
  • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
  • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
  • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
