If your on the fence about who to hire for your next remodel, repair, or anything else...look no further! It is not hard to put into words exactly how awesome Mike at AshCo Custom Construction is. Timely... All work needed we done from the hail damage to our home, (roof, gutter, siding), was done quickly without compromising quality or price. Professional... Mike is very professional, his contractor's are professional, friendly, and were outstanding to work with. They also left the job complete and did not leave a mess for me to clean up. Fair, Competitive, Patient ... Well as you know hiring a contractor can be confusing, costly, and sometimes frustrating. Mike is kind, explained everything to me in English. (The Insurance company not so much...) The final price was fair and competitive, worth every penny!!! After months of trying to get my entire roof replaced, (not just half???) Mike was able to help us with the red tape. He was patient about how SLOW they were in processing our claims. Knowledge... Mike is very knowledgeable when it comes to construction; from knowing how to fix the shortcuts and missed code requirements taken by the builder correctly without compromise to cost, schedule, and quality. I’ve bought and sold a number of houses and have usually painted them myself so I am very much a perfectionist. When I was selling my last home, I was crunched for time and hired a couple different paint contractors but was very disappointed. I was really nervous about hiring it out for my latest house but Don and his crew were amazing! I hadn’t planned on hiring painters when I bought my new house. When I got the keys though I realized how bad everything looked inside. The walls were old plaster and ugly enough, but the previous owner had pulled down a bunch of built-ins, shelving and art work, leaving holes everywhere! Plus, they had different colors in every room, and very dark colors which made the whole house feel depressing. I HAD to paint this house before moving in and couldn’t do it myself. Don’s crew did ceilings, walls, doors, and trim in the whole house in just 4 days. He wasn’t the cheapest bid, but still very reasonable. And the work was top-quality! I plan on using them again in the Spring to do my exterior. Seriously, pick these guys!

We hired Jay for a big project. We needed to have our basement walls sanded. The contractor before him never sanded down textured walls. It took 3 days for Jay to complete this and he did a phenomenal job! He provided good quality work while respecting my house. He also fixed some areas that didn't have texture or rough places. He is a down to earth guy and gives good advice. We would definitely hire him again for future projects.

Had a drywall repair project that Mike gave an honest competitive bid on and chose him based upon solid reviews. The work exceeded all expectations, you would never know there was damage to the drywall. He showed up, and upon viewing the repair to be smaller than he originally expected, included repainting at no additional cost, which was not within the scope of work I originally requested a bid on! Was quick and professional, would use him again and would also recommend to others.

Had a broken irrigation pipe. SPS offered a competitive estimate and was available the next day and so went with them. Glad I did. I really liked his approach. Good communications. Kept me appraised of what he was doing and finished the job as promised. Seems like a totally honest guy to boot. He stayed true to his estimate even though he probably could've charge more. I recommend this provider.

Todd repaired a water damaged ceiling, replacing damaged sheetrock, mudding and texturing. His work was excellent. He was able to match the texture on the rest of the ceiling so well that it is difficult to tell where he repaired. Todd even cleaned up when he was done. Todd was very reliable and timely. I would definitely hire him again!

I have a garage that needed to be prepared for painting. He added mud to the existing sheetrock and sanded. He also hanged 4 lights in the garage. His price was higher than another quote I received but he was able to start right away. They did a good job and I would recommend him.

Going through a major house renovation, my wife and I haver worked with multiple contractors in the past 4 months. Working with Clark was a breath of fresh air. He was honest, hard working and paid really close attention to the details. He reported every step along the way and made sure my wife and I were happy. We will definitely be working with Clark again and would highly recommend him to anyone thinking about hiring him.

Manny has been a great contractor for my remodeling project. He has taken my husband under his wing teaching him about construction while he works alongside him. Our project would be at a standstill if it wasn't for this company's willingness to do work on any type of remodeling project.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much will it cost to fix a hole in the wall?

If you have a hole in your wall, don’t despair; drywall repair professionals can patch the hole and repaint the surface and no one will be the wiser. The cost to repair a drywall hole depends on the size of the surface area of the damage, the materials and labor required, and (for a minor repair) any minimum service fee the repair company may charge. The actual labor and drywall prices may be lower than the minimum service fee, but pros must ensure their business overhead costs are met when they go out on minor jobs. To help keep costs low once the pros get there, make sure you have the right paint on hand if you want them to do to a touch up after the repair is complete, so you don’t keep them wait (and charging you for their time) while you search in the garage. Here are two examples of average prices for smaller drywall repair jobs:

  • Approximate cost to repair a 5-foot crack in a wall: $125 (labor $75 and materials $50).
  • Approximate cost to repair a 3-foot ceiling crack: $150.

What is the difference between sheetrock and drywall?

People sometimes use the terms “sheetrock” and “drywall” interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same. Drywall is the industry term for prefabricated sheets of wall, while Sheetrock is the brand name of a type of drywall. Depending on what room is being built, your drywall installation pro will select different thicknesses or grades of drywall. Standard residential drywall is ½-inch thick. Garage walls adjacent to a living space are typically ⅝-inch thick and serve as a firewall. For a garage ceiling, most contractors will use firewall-grade drywall materials to keep your home as safe as possible.

Different types of drywall can be color-coded to indicate their purpose. Purple or green drywall boards are often mold-resistant (MR) and are applied where moisture tends to accumulate, such as in bathrooms and basements or behind tile backsplashes at sinks. These mold-resistant sheets have a fiberglass instead of a paper facing finish to prevent water absorption. Regular drywall is gray or white. The drywall industry is constantly adapting with technology to provide safer and more targeted materials. You can even install soundproofing drywall to help prevent noise transfer through rooms.

How much does it cost to put up drywall?

The national average cost to hire a drywall installation professional ranges $375-$1,500, depending on the job at hand and where you are in the country. Your drywall installation cost will often be lower if the professional is installing the drywall in a new construction with open access as opposed to a remodel. The square footage of the job, the amount of materials, and the labor required also determine drywall prices. According to drywall pros, materials costs can range from 15 percent to 50 percent of your total project cost, depending on the work you’re having done. Request several quotes from drywall installation companies to find the right fit for your construction project. The quotes may be based on the company’s standard cost per square foot or a calculation of the time estimated to complete the job plus the size of the job plus materials and any travel fees. For example, drywall installation for one or two standard-size rooms could cost $900-$1,500. The cost to hang and tape an outbuilding with approximately 40 drywall sheets at 75 cents per square foot could total $1,450, including 3.75 days of labor for the drywall crew.

How much does it cost to repair drywall?

The national average price range to repair drywall is $210-$300. Drywall prices can vary greatly depending on the size of the hole or crack that needs repair, the amount of materials required, and other factors. Cracks can appear at the seams in your drywall due to uncontrollable factors like your house settling or even minor earthquakes. Drywall, although sturdy, will break with enough impact, so if a dresser falls and crashes into a wall or your have a mishap hammering in nails for artwork, you could need drywall repair. Drywall repair professionals may have a minimum service fee of $100-$150 regardless of the size of the job. This ensures that their business expenses are met anytime they send their crew out to a job. Here are some additional examples of average drywall repair prices:

  • Sand and texture five wall patches: $200 (45 minutes of labor and $40 of materials).
  • Repair a 4x8 section of wall: $225 (labor $150 and materials $75).
  • Replace drywall in an entire bedroom: $1,500 (price varies depending on the number of windows, whether there’s metal trim, etc.).
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
