Rich is a knowledgeable, respectful professional. He listened to my overall decorating vision and gave me helpful feedback on the best way to hang my curtains, paintings, and prints. He even consulted on additional items and colors that I should consider to add to my design. My house is exactly the way I wanted it thanks to Rich!

Duarte Decor, LLC was worth the experience. They were able to make my vision come to life. I was pleased with the service provided and would recommend them to anyone. They were diligent in providing good service and I was more than pleased with the outcome. Not only did they bring to life my vision, but I connected with the selected pieces which, when paired with the color scheme, resulted in what I would say is a vision to behold literally. Thank you Duarte Decor.

You will love working with Linda Parsley! She helped me redecorate the master bedroom from top to bottom, and it looks fantastic. Thanks to her knowledge of all the products, I was able to choose the correct level of mattress pads, comforters, blankets and pillows. Every item she recommended has served me well. I wanted something in the blue family, and she found bedskirt, lightly-quilted top and duvet cover in a perfect color. She helped me with the decorative pillows and covers and some accent throw pillows. I tried the sheets she recommended and now I won't buy anything else. They are soft yet durable and my entire household loves them. She even recommended the Rowenta iron when I told her I liked to iron the pillowcases, and I have bought two more for family members. She did all of this in record time and within my budget. I even had room to add towels for the master bath, which she chose. I will go back to her for my next projects! Easy to work with, she wants what you want, and she's quite efficient at it! Great experience!

I went to Haverty's to purchase furniture for our new home. She was simply amazing. She took her time and gave me her undivided attention. Ms Johnstone went over and above her duties as a sales person. Because of her design style she kept me focused on style and colors. We started with the sofa and built around that. She made me think outside the box. She came to my home and decided what colors needed to go in all the rooms and suggested the perfect painter to do the work. I wanted a little more pop on my headboard. She gave me ideas for the family room, kitchen, sunroom, master bedroom and bath. Ms Johnstone came personally to paint the nailheads on my bed which gave it a a lot of pop She actually did it herself,my husband and family were amazed with her work. In fact, my house looks like it could be in any magazine. She always came when she said she would. If I would come to the store she would always make time for me. Her quality of work is impeccable not because she was an employee but because she loves what she does. I was impressed totally.Nothing went wrong and she made me a happy homeowner.

I've worked with Julie on a number of projects in my home, starting with choosing paint color and area rugs and most recently having her design our baby nursery. We didn't change a thing when Baby2 came, we love every inch of the space she created! I highly recommend Julie, no matter how big or small the project!

Sophisticated. Comfortable. Beautiful. Unique. That’s the magic that Arsheen brought to my living room and I am incredibly grateful for her hard work and vision for making it happen. I was looking at my living room last spring and wondering, for what seemed liked the 1000th time whether it would ever look like a cohesive space. My husband and I had purchased our home at the end of 2013, and I’d always intended to get new furniture and make over the space. But between a wedding, pregnancy, new baby and our hectic work schedules (and life), the only thing I’d managed to do is get the downstairs painted. I finally accepted that I needed some help, and put out a call for designers on Thumbtack. I had several replies, but Arsheen’s pitch was the one that appealed to me due to her unique background (architect originally from India), portfolio with some updated midcentury modern touches and professional demeanor. When Arsheen and I got started, I filled out a questionnaire and she asked me at what I wanted. I told her something like: “I love midcentury modern..but not all of it..just Swedish midcentury modern. I need sleek lines. Plus Africa, India and Mexico to reflect my travels. And lots of colors—orange, blue, purple—but not too much color. And pictures of my family. And I hate sectionals but you can show me some anyway as long as they’re not made of leather. And I would like to have a space for our little one’s toys without said toys dominating the entire room.” (Note: I’m probably forgetting some of my many requests here. I have to be honest, had I heard that seemingly contradictory laundry list of requests from a client, I would have run for the hills! But that’s why I’m not an interior designer.) To her credit, Arsheen didn’t flinch. She delivered a couple of different floor plans that made great use the space, brought in (modern) midcentury flair and gave me the rich colors I was asking for without it being over the top. To my surprise, I quickly realized that the sectional she had proposed was a much better fit for the space and my current lifestyle. (Most importantly, it wasn’t leather!) After a number of iterations, we settled on a design that had neutral, solid colored accent chairs (dark blue) but brought in more colors (orange, more blues) without going over the top. The lines of sectional were midcentury-inspired, and she also brought those touches in with the legs of sectional, the chairs, and my unique coffee table. The rug and Roman shades also have Indian-inspired designs on them. It’s also worth mentioning the fixtures and related elements. While I was a little doubtful at first, she swapped out the original fan for a sleek and modern one. Honestly, it’s easily the fixture with the greatest benefit/cost ratio—it has completely opened up the room. She also recommended a new fireplace mantle and creating a new fireplace frame. I really couldn’t figure out what it was going to look like, even with the drawing, but I just went with it, and it looks amazing. It’s so much more modern than the original. Even my handyman was surprised at the difference those two additions made. (Note: Arsheen works with a wide variety of vendors, but is more than willing to work with your preferred vendors. If we had an issue with any vendor, Arsheen worked overtime to make sure it was corrected as soon as possible.) When the time came to put everything together, I was nervous. How would all of the great elements come together? Well, I need not have worried. Arsheen managed to pull together all of the things that I mentioned above (the new), plus photos and momentoes from my travels to Mexico, Ghana, India and other countries, and a gallery wall of family portraits. And it’s everything I could have wanted. It’s gorgeous and sophisticated, yet, I still feel comfortable flopping down in front of my newly wall-mounted television and doing my hair. My husband was impressed by the great ‘blend of form and function’ and my notoriously picky family and friends have raved about the design. Our little one has a toy trunk (courtesy of Target!) that keeps all of the toys organized and out of the way. And now I’m happy and proud to have people come to visit. Arsheen doesn’t just create rooms, she creates experiences for you to enjoy if you place your trust in her. I did, and I’m so glad I took the leap. Hire her—you won’t regret it.

Connie did an absolutely fabulous job in creating new window treatments for my dining room. After I described to her what I had in mind in terms of style and color, she showed me fabric samples and designs that were right on target -- exactly what I was looking for. The installation went smoothly as well, with Connie, along with her expert installer. Not only was Connie professional, she was also friendly and accommodating. I could not have asked for a better experience, and I intend to call her again soon for more design expertise!

Courtney has been super helpful so far in my decorating project. I value her opinion and we were able to pick paint colors for every room quickly but with a lot of thought. We looked at fabrics I like and the overall look I'm going for and I'm really excited to see the finished product. My dark house is going to be transformed! Can't wait until we start working on the next phase- window treatments and re-upholstering furniture!!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.
