Tony and his crew renovated my entire full bathroom, kitchen, half bath, and exterior studio workspace. Their work included plumbing, electrical, insulation, sheetrock, tile, hardwood floor refinishing, cabinetry assembly and install, and new floor install. I initially hired Tony for a much smaller scope of work but once he signed up over a month ago I don't think he has missed a single day of work at my home except for one or two Sundays. His work ethic is unparalleled but more importantly, his "can-do" attitude was always positive and professional. I repeatedly had him fix the mistakes of other workers I had hired. He never complained - he just politely informed me that he would "take care of it", often at no extra charge. My job changed multiple times but my price with Tony stayed the same. He reminded me several times that he wasn't the type to "nickel and dime" his clients and that he was more invested in building relationships with satisfied customers. Of all the people I had working in my home Tony is the only one I would not hesitate to call back or recommend to friends. The one note I would add is that I felt most at ease when it was Tony himself doing the actual work. He is the lead contractor because of his attention to detail. I know that if he comes into my space to work he will leave it clean. There is a reason why Tony has so many glowing reviews on Thumbtack. He is competent, quick, and will get your job done for an extremely fair price. Moreover, he (and his crew) are just kind and professional people that really do their absolute best to get your job done right.

Matt did a nice job installing marble floor and wall tile in a small powder room. Worked around walls that were far from parallel, making the layout difficult, to finish with an excellent result.

Mr. Mock installed hardwood flooring throughout the main floor of our house, including entryway, dining room, formal living room, family room, kitchen, sun room, and powder room. He was very professional. He and his crew showed up right on time each day. The job was completed in the time he said it would be. Mr. Mock and his crew are extremely hard workers and wasted no time. The cost of the installation was very fair. The floors look beautiful and we are very pleased with Mr. Mock and the work he completed for us.

Nilto of Caldas Jr. Home Improvement exceeded my expectations. He is professional, kind and a highly skilled home improver. We just purchased our first townhome and we needed to get it painted, carpeted and have wood floors installed. We hired Nilto to paint and do all other things on our punch list. He painted the entire house. And did a beautiful job. I love it. He also installed new fans and did some other home improvements. He does bathroom renovations, so when we can do that, we will hire him! We had three different contractors working on the house and Nilto was by far the most professional, skilled, and nice. His prices are right! He does good work. He goes above and beyond and he’s just a real nice guy. Hire Nilto of Caldas Jr. Home Improvement! You will not regret it. Thank you, Nilto and staff for all your hard work. I love my walls and new fans!

I have used roofing contractors, siding contractors, hvac contractors, gutter contractors, and patio Concrete contractors in the past. They all have similar traits. They are late, they pull workers off my job to work elsewhere, and they don’t finish on time! Not with GAN Construction, they showed up on time and the same crew worked on the project from beginning to end. I contracted GAN to do three concrete jobs, 1) pour a concrete slab for a 12’x12’ shed on a sloping rear yard, 2) pour a concrete walkway from the front of the house to the drive way, and 3) cut a hole in the garage floor and pour a recessed pit to accommodate my lift. Because the concrete slab for the shed is on a slope, they actually poured in a concrete footer and built a cinder block foundation wall to support the slab. The garage job was a bit more complicated. The pit had to meet code to support my lift which is capable of supporting 7000 lbs. Their engineers determined the concrete will need to sit on 5 pillars (3-4 deep below backfill) and the concrete pit itself was built with rebar every 12 inches and wire mesh. The concrete is 12 inches thick! It is not going anywhere! The walk was a piece of cake so I thought. Because the old walk way has settled more than 7 inches in different spots, GAN decided to tie the walk was into the concrete steps with rebar ever 2 feet. The earth was compacted to reduce possible setting in the near future. Over all I am very pleased with the work GAN did. The crew was very professional, kept the work area clean and when they left, it was as if they were never there. I would highly recommend using GAN for your concrete projects! Dr. Al Wong

Mike and his team installed a concrete patio with brick border and brick step, and other concrete repairs around our home. Mike was easy to communicate with, the quality and price were very good, and we are very happy with the final result. We will definitely use them again in the future and recommend them to others looking for hardscape work.

I had a deterioration of the grout on my front porch which has caused a leak in my basement. GRG came when they said they would and they removed the old grout. They regrouted the brick porch with new grout and were able to match the color pretty well. In addition, they reset some bricks that had broken and come loose. Their price was more than fair, they did excellent work, and I would use their services again.

I hired Traylor design to redo my hardwood floors in my condo. They had to remove the old floors from a concrete subfloor and glue down the new floors. Six months later, the floors still look great. Very good value, however some patience required.

Gabriel Plata was one of five contractors that quoted me from Thumbtack for overhaul of my driveway/walkway from one car park asphalt drive and worn down concrete walkway, all with 5 stars, to a two car park concrete driveway and remodel concrete walkway. Gab went the extra mile, adding flagstone to the walk way trim to win the contract, provide a longer warranty and proper construction without cutting corners. His crew worked fast and I love the driveway I've waited 18 years to have!

Darold and his grandson were exceptional. I employed them to fix loose and broken bricks in our driveway, cracked bricks on the exterior wall, cracked stones and mortar in the stone patio, and cracks in the chimney crown. They quoted an extremely competent price. They advised me on my options, objectively pricing the different options and giving me the right information to make an informed decision. They arrived punctually everyday and finished the job over a period of five days. I called them on the sixth day to take care of some work in the stone patio. Even though this was out of scope, they came without any complaint and took care of my requests, without charging anything. I enjoyed working with Darold and his grandson. They are honest, hardworking, professional and produced high quality work. I also enjoyed getting to know Darold and admired his life story. I very strongly recommend Darold and his grandson.

I am very happy with the job Raul did for me today. He pressure washed our patio and patio fence at our townhouse, and it all looks great. The concrete patio is decorative with small river stones embedded in exposed aggregate concrete. Someone took time to make this patio years ago, and Raul's attentive cleaning revealed the nice features. The patio fence is 100% better looking too, the garden all still intact and we'll follow Raul's advice to seal the fence as soon as it is dry. He arrived at the agreed time and honored his quote. I recommend Raul!

I had Unique Homes (Simeon) complete 4 different projects for me, each progressively bigger. All of them were successful -- although not without little issues that came up now and then, but that were always taken care of. The prices were very good and the jobs were done well. Job #1 - I had a front porch that needed concrete work. This was a relatively small job, but it was done well. Job #2 - This was a remodel of small bathroom. Again, the job was done well and was a good price. And Simeon indulged us owners half-way through the project when we did not like something about the floor tiles we had chosen. Totally our issue, we did not really like how it looked when it started getting installed. But he undid some of his work and we were able to fix it. Job #3 - This was a full bathroom remodel, so a more significant job. Again, this project was done well, but the costs savings really started to come through on this project. We were very happy with the final look of the bathroom. Job #4 - This was by far the biggest job. It was a complete remodel of our master bathroom. I had received various quotes from other contractors in the $30-40K range for the project (including materials). Simeon's prices were less than a third of that, however that did not include any of the materials. In the end, I think the materials is the source of a lot of the savings since I think the others hide mark-ups (or store kick-backs) in the materials. For this project we went to some high end stores and looked at their display designs and chose/copied what we liked. We chosen something that was based on a white marble tile as a base ...and Lowes/HD carried it at a fraction of the cost of Tile City. I think we saved $5k on the marble along. We bought some of the more unique accent stuff in Tile City at full price, but for everything else we were able to replicate the Tile City look with HD or Lowe's materials of equal quality. We bought a high end shower panel, but bought it through Costco. The same fixture at a high-end bathroom store was thousands more than what we paid. At some higher end stores Simeon would give us the Unique Homes discount that he had negotiated. Some places (like the glass doors for the shower) were still expensive...but I ended up with the same bathroom that would have been $40k for about $20K. So yes, I recommend Unique Homes.

Jeff and Sandy at Olde Port worked with me and the bank on a major remodel of our foreclosed house, we had almost everything under the sun renovated or replaced on this house (See list below). They started work the day after we closed and did not stop until the job was done and done to my satisfaction (which is a pretty hard achievement). Not only did they make quick work, they did everything right the first time and at a great price. They constantly communicated with me throughout this process and I always knew when they were going to be at my house. Their workers were polite, professional, and on-time; they even asked before using the restroom or going into another part of the house to check on things. Our house was built in 1984 and just about everthing including the water heater was from the 80s. We moved in the same day our roof was getting replaced and the workers didn't miss a beat, they still finished the entire roof in 1 day. Olde Port always answered my questions and did not try to up-sell me, they recommened and gave me the products I needed. They even handled our permits needed for the electrical and plumbing work. I would highly recommend this contractor for any job big or small. Major remodel - New roof New seamless gutters New skylight window Replaced all windows in the house with high energy efficient windows Concrete repairs including a new front step New trench drains Repaired trim around garage doors and painted garage doors New doors Landscaping - Removed trees away from house Plumbing - new water heater, fixed toilet leaks Electrical - repaired and replaced light fixtures, switches and outlets

1. Mr Durante assessed my sidewalk began at my driveway and ended at my house door of course with a "stoop" in front of my house door. 2. He told me what was awry with my sidewalk and the necessary work that would be required. 3. Mr Durante told me why my sidewalk needed repair and pointed out the tree root pushing the sidewalk upward & informed me of further damage if the tree root continued to push upward. 4. He told me what needed to be done and he spoke of additional work that would enhance the look of my sidewalk, but was not detrimental to resolve my sidewalk issue. 5. He explained all the hows, whats, temporary inconveniences, temporary accommodations, timeframe, etc thoroughly and answered my questions completely. 6. He gave me a cost for the needed work and a cost for the enhancement work. 7. I chose the full work and I was given a start date. 8. The work began the date & time that Mr Durante had set. 9. His crew was professional, polite, and accommodating. See, I had a knee replacement surgery & had to go on an errand which mean "stepping around" the work area. Two workers assisted me all the way to my car & assisted me back to my home when I returned. I was so grateful that hot day!☺️ 10. The first day was "tear down day" & placing temporary outside structures to assist my family for entering & exiting the front door. It was 100% a convenience! 11. The second day was the installation of the new sidewalk & stoop. Needless, to say; the final outcome was more than I expected! And, I was in awe! 12. The third day was "checkup" & removing the covering over the sidewalk (the leaves were falling & embedding themselves in the newly laid wet sidewalk, so the crew covered it.) 13. My husband & I were given a "walk through", our questions were answered completely, and we were apprised of all details in reference to the work warranty. 14. We paid the bill, received our receipt & and enjoyed Mr Durante' hearty handshake and infectious smile. 15. So, in summation, when I walk my new sidewalk I am still impressed & honored to have had the work done by Mr Durante & his crew. 16. Mr Durante is: - Professional - Courteous - Dependable - Thorough - Knowledgeable of his work - Honest - Considerate - Approachable - Superb Team Leader - And, his smile is a "big plus!" Mr Durante and his crew are the most professional work crew that I've had the pleasure and opportunity to have work done for me. Mind you, the temperature was in the upper 90s & very humid, BUT not once did I see a frown on Mr Durante' face or his crew. They kept the timeframe and integrity of your company despite the weather! I do not know why you are requesting this info now, BUT I am very pleased to submit it. Mr Durante & his crew deserve "company" monetary gifts. I still have so much satisfaction with my sidewalk & stoop! I am so satisfied! It' been an honor & pleasure to do this survey. I learned long ago to "Give honor where honor is due." And, due "propers" must resonate in this case. Thank you very much!

Our concrete driveway was in need of serious repair. We had a concern over a tree next to the drive and possible roots under the drive. Chris Harvey was contacted to look at the repair job and also to work with a representative from Care of Trees to make sure that any work on the drive would not damaged the tree. Chris got a crew in, the took out the old concrete, took all of it away. Laid an iron grid and had new concrete poured. The work was done very well, the drive looks great. We are very pleased with the outcome. The price was we felt reasonable and it was a pleasure to work with Chris. We have also asked him to look at some other work that we need on our property.

Gustavo has made a few renovations in my house. As soon as we moved in, he renovated the two bathrooms. The job was clean, the final product was great and best of all it was made on time. After that, he changed the floor of the main entrance of the house and built a 14'x17' concrete patio in the back yard, including the removal of a window and the installation of a French door to the patio. A great addition to the house!! Home Beautiful Renovations & Repairs did wonderful jobs in our home. And without a doubt I will recommend them.

We recently had a complete kitchen remodel and are very happy with the results. We hired Dennis Gillooly of Trimline Construction as the general contractor. We were on a very tight budget and after pricing the options from a local cabinet supplier, Dennis suggested we look at using Ready to Assemble cabinets instead. He explained the various options and helped us with the design, layout, and ordering of these cabinets from an east coast supplier. This saved us more than 50% vs the original quoted cost from the local supplier! We got really nice cabinets at a fraction of the cost. Dennis put these cabinets together, installed them, helped us pick the perfect handles, installed those as well, and completed all the trim work to make the finished job look wonderful. We love our new kitchen – it looks great! We also previously used Dennis Gillooly to finish our 1,200 sq foot basement. Dennis took care of managing everything including the design, framing, drywall, a full bathroom, kitchenette/bar area, a ton of storage closets including a cedar closet and custom shelving, the big recreation room, enclosed office space, new French doors, cutting in new windows in our concrete walls, and he personally installed 1,200 sq feet of engineered wood flooring throughout. We painted the basement ourselves in order to save money and found Dennis very willing to work with us to make such a large project both affordable but also exactly what we wanted.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good concrete contractor?

Concrete contractors pave driveways, build foundations for homes, install retaining walls, create hardscaping for front and back yards, build concrete steps, and so much more. When searching for a driveway contractor, read reviews from previous customers and ask for referrals. Ask the contractor for photos of examples of their work that’s similar to what you want. Confirm they will get the proper permits so your driveway is up to code. Hiring a driveway contractor to install concrete can average $5-$6 per square foot, or more, depending on where you live, the slope and grade of the driveway site, and regional labor costs. For a new asphalt driveway, the cost could average from $3-5 per square foot. A standard concrete driveway of 500 square feet averaging $5-$6 per square foot would cost $2,500-$3,000 — so it pays to research someone who will do quality work. Excavation and grading work can increase your cost per square foot significantly. Ask whether the contractor provides a materials and labor warranty for their work. Some cracking of the concrete may occur as it settles, but you should talk with your contractor about any structural or aesthetic concerns you have. When hiring a concrete contractor, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to redo a concrete driveway?

Replacing or renovating a damaged or time-worn asphalt or concrete driveway can boost your curb appeal and add to your home value. If your concrete driveway is nearing 20 years or more, it may be wise to invest in an entirely new driveway, instead of redoing your current one. Asphalt driveways average 15-20 years of life, so if you start needing major repairs around the 15 year mark, weigh the pros and cons of repairing or replacing it. Request bids from two to three driveway contractors to determine pricing and project scope, and check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack. Here are some examples of average costs:

  • The national average cost to hire a concrete specialist is $2,750, but that price can vary greatly depending on the work needed to repair and resurface your concrete driveway, the square footage of the project, current costs of concrete, and regional labor rates.
  • Driveway contractors average $2-$3 per square foot to smooth and resurface your asphalt driveway.
  • Resurfacing concrete driveways averages $3-$10 per square foot. Pricing can depend on repairs needed, project size and geographic location.
  • Nationally, the average cost for resurfacing a 500-square-foot driveway ranges from $2,000 to $5,000.
  • Sealant for a concrete drive can cost $20-$80 per gallon.
  • Sealant for an asphalt drive averages 25 cents per square foot.

What do paving contractors do?

Paving contractors can be hired to install a concrete or asphalt driveway at your home, office or property. They can also repave an asphalt or concrete driveway that has been damaged by time, weather or heavy loads. When you are looking for a driveway contractor, request quotes from at least three professionals who are in good standing and have great customer reviews. They should do a site visit and write you a bid, detailing the work involved, materials needed, approximate length of the project and estimated cost.

The site for your new driveway will determine costs and the work required for your contractor. First, the ground must be excavated to lay a clear path. This means removing any trees, bushes and stumps. Next, the driveway contractor will grade the area, making a level surface for the concrete or asphalt. To ensure proper drainage, driveway contractors should install a sub-base of compacted gravel (or similar) 4 inches-8 inches deep, depending on your soil type. Then the concrete or asphalt may be poured and smoothed over the top. Your driveway contractor should recommend an appropriate sealant for your climate and advise you on curing time. When hiring a paving contractor, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.
