Excellent, high quality professional work, dedicated, the editor delivered an excellent quality deliverable under a very tight deadline. An investment I will never regret and will definitely use the services again. The editor is highly knowledgeable with insights that go beyond usual writing tasks. I am highly obliged for her expert suggestions which I have accepted all. I have already recommended her to my other friends and clients, and shared with them very professional experiences I have received while working Lauren on multiple projects. I will be working with her in near and long term future definitely. Highly recommended!

This review is long over due. Mark's services from resume writing to interview coaching fit all of my needs. I had not required a resume in a long time and had a unusual career path of that as a business owner prior to being called to active duty as a Army Reserve Officer. Being able to actually meet with Mark and explain my parallel careers set him apart from his peers. After completing my resume he then proceeded to train/coach me on his unique yet effective cover letter and interview process. Several employers have had nothing but positive feedback and job offers are starting to mount!

Maureen helped me revamp my resume. After teaching for 20 years, it was time to enter the real world of jobs. Maureen took my experiences and translated them into appropriate terms for my new job quest. I appreciated the time Maureen took to get to know me, as she was able to tailor the resume to reflect who I am.

Alice did a wonderful job editing various personal stories I have written over the years. I wanted to put them all together in one book. All this was done with great dispatch. She even had some excellent suggestions to improve the writing. No question I would highly recommend her.

Jackie is an exceptional leader. Her attention to detail is impressive, and her work product is always top-notch. I've enjoyed having her as an editor while with Watchdog.org, and I know that she's dedicated to accuracy, good writing, and ensuring that those working under her direction are appreciated, and are rewarded for work well done. I hope to have the opportunity in the future to work with her again!

I sent Tracy a rough draft of a paper I'd been writing for an English thesis seminar, and was absolutely thrilled with the results! Tracy kept in constant contact with me, asking clarifying questions so that she could get it done right. She exhibited extremely high professionalism throughout the entire process, and got my work back to me in no time at all. I will definitely be coming back to her with more of my writing!

Dale was a great ACT tutor, especially when it came to teaching an international student the ins and outs of the Reading and Writing sections. Since we started working two weeks before the test date, Dale laid out a great strategy of drilling practice tests and helped us find our weak points to review. He had a great base of resources and experience to help us not only with tactics and test taking skills, but how we could apply these study techniques to a broad range of tests and classes.

Kristen was absolutely excellent. She helped me with writing, coaching, creating documents, even job searching for me. I hired her for career coaching, and evolved the services offered into my behavioral health issues. Counseling starts with trust, and I have yet to have a better experience, a more honest experience, and a more professional experience.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you hire a good grant writer?

Grants are available to nonprofit organizations, for-profit businesses that qualify for government grants, and individuals who qualify for foundation or government grants. Hiring a good grant writer can help you gain funding in your chosen field. According to the American Grant Writers’ Association, grant writers can help you research potential grant opportunities; write grant proposals, create budgets, and build budget narratives; review written materials before you submit; prepare a business plan; analyze your organization for grant competitive qualities; prepare research grants; help with 501(c)(3) applications for nonprofits; and more. Investing in the right grant writer could result in a financial win for your organization. Generally no licenses or certificates are required to be a good grant writer, but you may want to find a grant writer who has been certified (not just received a certificate of completion) by a reputable organization such as the Grant Professionals Certification Institute. Qualities to look for in a good grant writer include:

      • Proven success writing winning grants, especially in your target area.
      • Strong writing skills.
      • Strong math skills and demonstrated proficiency with budgeting.
      • Careful attention to detail — brilliant grant proposals may be rejected just for formatting errors, so you want someone who follows instructions explicitly.
      • Expertise in your target area.
      • Punctuality and good communication skills.

How much does a grant writer cost?

Hiring a grant writer can give you a competitive edge when applying for financial grants for your business or nonprofit organization, or as an individual. The cost to hire a grant writer can vary depending on their academic background, areas of expertise, previous grant writing success and years of experience. According to the Grant Professionals Association, grant writers should be paid hourly or by flat fee. It is unethical for a grant writer to accept a commission or percentage compensation of grant monies received. They can, however, be awarded bonuses in line with the hiring company’s prevailing practices. Here are some examples of average grant writing fees:

      • Hourly rate for grant writers with less experience or fewer grants awarded: $25-$35 per hour.
      • Hourly rate for grant writers with some degree of success: $35-$75 per hour.
      • Hourly rate for grant writers with proven success winning large grants: $75-$150 or more per hour.
      • For a smaller grant, the writer may charge a flat fee of $200-$500 for preparation and submission.

Pricing may also vary based on the complexity of the grant application. A federal grant that requires pages of research, budgets and a business plan may take more than 30 hours to prepare. For a high-level grant writer who charges $100 per hour, this means $3,000 or more in grant writing fees.

Most grant writers will provide you with a total cost estimate before agreeing to the work. You may be required to pay a deposit up front, or the grant writer may work from a retainer. Often, seasoned grant writers pay for themselves in the long run by writing successful grants.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
