- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I took brick laying in high school and worked for a mason on weekends and 1 summer. I grew up on the construction site because I had a single father who raised me and he then and still has a 1 of the oldest roofing companies in VA and when I was just 16 years old I ran a 5 man crew for him during the summer and summers after that I also worked as a working project manager for Great American Custom Log Homes for 20 years all hands on work and all phases of residential construction at the same company
- How did you get started doing this type of work?
I was given an opportunity about 28 years ago as a helper to work on custom log homes. I didn’t know at the time that I was going to be involved with not just setting the logs in place but also subfloor framing, deck building, flooring, cabinetry and in time involved in and was taught how to do essentially everything inside and out of a residential home and I literally mean everything. It was all hands on learning and 4 years later I was getting my own work on the side and was a working project manager for that same company (Great American Log Homes )I stayed at that company for over 20 years until the owner retired then I went full time as my own general contractor company
- Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?
I rebuilt a rear covered deck on a house in Staunton that was really rotten and looked like it was going to fall down. Ronnie and I had it tore down with roof still standing and rebuilt the new deck in 3 days . That is what I call a smooth job and of course the client was ecstatic to-have it done 3.5 days earlier than expected
