We have used Thunder Mill Designs for several different renovation projects. Each time, Irene took our general ideas and turned them into better plans then we could have imagined. She's creative yet respectful of the wants and needs of her clients. She is visionary with an eye for detail. She does brilliant design work but is just as careful in recommending a tile pattern or choice of material. We appreciated her sense of design for whole spaces, expanding her skill beyond architecture to creating a mood and style for an overall space. Never an issue with timing or responsiveness. We'd love to use Thunder Mill again.

Steve Miyamoto at MotoMedia Web Design has been my web support for about 8 years, helping to create and maintain two websites for me. He has helped me with design suggestions, ongoing Wordpress updating/support, the resolving of issues, and multiple other behind the scenes "web stuff". Steve's support has been invaluable to me! I highly recommend him for web design and support. (Not to mention his rates are very affordable!) Cathy Weymouth

The project was to design a kitchen in new construction re-using cabinets from a home that had done a new kitchen and sold perfectly fine cherry solid wood cabinets made in the late 90's. Jonni figured out how to do it, minimizing waste and taking our preferences seriously. She is timely and responsive when doing a job.

    About

This is a bit of a trick question because decorating styles and taste is so subjective and also there are so many designers with different personalities and working styles you aren't going to work well with all of them. You need to pick someone that will work well with you and for you. Like any relationship, business or personal the right fit is important.

    About

I started building websites professionally in 1999. I've completed hundreds of websites for businesses in over 40 countries. During this time I've found a way to build websites that creates traffic, drives sales, and helps put you in touch with the people who visit your website by grabbing their name, e-mail and phone number. It's easy to build a website that looks good. My focus is on performance. The truth is there is a secret to creating a successful website and it doesn't happen by accident. If you want a website that gets lots of traffic, creates sales, and provides you with targeted leads to follow up on then you'll like my services. You'll never find another web developer able to beat my rates. Because I've been doing this so long I have the quickest and most efficient methods to design and service your website. This allows me to price my websites unlike anyone else. Your website costs just $35/month. Everything is included. Just $35 gets you "unlimited everything." No strings attached, no catch. We provide the following services: * Hosting * Design work * E-mail accounts setup * Storage space * Bandwidth As well as Google SEO, consulting, social marketing, video, and many other services. I'm able to do this because I am efficient. I don't waste time and I get results as quickly as possible. Other web developers will "nickel and dime" you for every service. They charge by the hour. They do this because they have no idea how long your project will take to complete. They charge by the hour to protect themselves from you. I charge a flat monthly rate because I already know the outcome of your project will be a success. I know that it won't take me months and months to complete your project. I'll be able to swiftly provide you with exactly what you need in order to launch a successful project online. Try my services out. The value of my services are far greater than $35/month fee in fact I could easily charge $1,000 for my websites. I use to do so. However, by charging a smaller fee, I have been able to reach more people who sincerely need help bringing their project to life. My goal is to work with as many people as possible. I know that by working with you I'll help you avoid the horror stories I hear so often from my new clients of bad web designers who disappear and leave them stranded. The value of my services far exceeds the small rate I charge of just $35/month, but over time our business relationship will develop. With my support your website can succeed and by gaining your loyalty and confidence over time your small monthly website fee will support keeping my business online. Looking forward to working with you. Sincerely, SBG PS. I made the name South Beach Geek while I was living in Miami Beach, Florida but now I currently reside in Vermont. Of course, my services are available locally as well as to anyone living anywhere else worldwide.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a web designer?

Your website is often the first thing your customers see when they’re searching for a business or service on the web. As the face of your organization, your website needs to be attractive and functional, offering the latest features that users now expect. To plan and design a site that both reflects your company’s mission and values and appeals to customers takes a professional web designer. While free online services can help people set up websites, web designers can provide a unique solution made specifically to meet customers’ personal or business needs.

Most web designers offer a wide variety of services to make your website aesthetically pleasing and easy to use. Modern web design must be mobile-friendly and scalable, capable of expanding to include a blog, social media sites, and even video streaming; web designers are experts at integrating various web technologies. They can build the site, add functionality, test it, launch it on a live server, and track and maintain its performance.

In addition to web design and graphic design, some web design providers also offer development and security services, including search engine optimization (SEO), social media marketing and management, logo design, site maintenance, domain registration and hosting, protection against malware, and digital marketing and content services.

    What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

    • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
    • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
    • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
    • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

What makes a good logo design?

A good logo is an easily identifiable, memorable image that represents your brand. A good logo design aligns with your business model and expresses your company’s core values. A good logo design is simple, appealing, and easy for customers and viewers to quickly process. Some of the key components of a great logo are type, color palette and design. The scale, font and arrangement of the text you select will all make a difference in the feel and representation of your brand. A graphic designer will help you home in on the colors that best represent your identity and help you keep the color palette simple. The design of your logo includes the shapes you select and the way the color and type are arranged together. Investing in the services of a professional to create your logo design is likely a smart investment for any size business. Nationally, the average price range for a logo designer ranges from $170 to $250.

How much do web designers charge?

The average cost for hiring a web designer varies greatly depending on the scope of the work, which may range from building a site from scratch to rebranding an existing one, as well as the amount of content and graphics the designer will create. In general, the more complex the project, the more time the design agency will have to spend. Because web designers often work on an hourly basis, the longer the project, the higher the costs; you can count on the web designer spending at minimum 10 hours to create a very basic website with just a handful of pages with few elements. Prices also depend on the designer’s skill set, the process, and the company’s rates. In general, the national average cost for a basic website package starts at $500, but a customized website can cost as much as $2,000 or more. Here are typical average hourly rates, broken out by the complexity of the work:

    • Basic layout and user interface: $15-$40 per hour
    • Content management system design: $20-$50 per hour
    • Custom website design with custom code: $45-$75 per hour
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
