The Michael Benson Band

Michael and his Band were a complete hit at our wedding! Not only did they play everything from Frank Sinatra to Eminem (flawlessly, by the way), but Michael and the band members kept the energy high for the entire evening! Our guests kept commenting days after the wedding, about how wonderful the band was! Michael was a constant professional, easy to work with, accessible and offered great suggestions for our playlists too! My husband, who previously believed that no band could match the variety that a DJ would offer, has forever been convinced otherwise and remains one of their biggest fans. We'd highly recommend the Michael Benson Band, without hesitation, to anyone looking to provide an incomparable musical experience for his/her event. We can't wait to have an opportunity to work with Michael and his band again in the future.

David is a very knowledgeable musician and teacher. I have had lessons from him in both music theory and a band setting. As a band leader he is outstanding and has helped me to understand the theory behind improv soloing. In the study of music theory he is a vault of knowledge and has broken things down to the smallest part so that beginners like me can start learning and USING the info in practice. The book he wrote is well laid out and very useful both in organization of theory and tools for practice on saxophone.

Band was absolutely amazing and with much better musicians at a lower price than other bands we checked out. They were able to learn and master our first dance songs on a last minute basis, play some unexpected live requests, and even allow our friends to join and sing on a couple tunes. Many people complimented the vocalist and the band in general at the end of the night as well. Highly recommend. I have background in music, and these guys know how to play.

Pyramid Scheme was everything we hoped for and more. The interaction with them before, during and after the performance was perfect. Their repotoire is excellent, they adjusted the sound level right to the size of the room and the crowd, normal discussions were still possible without loosing any intensity of the songs played. Even joining the band to play a few numbers together using their instruments was possible. Would definately hire Pyramid Scheme again if we need entertainment in the area.

I use Ian for our monthly music and all of our Wine Club releases as well. He is always professional, easy to work with, and always demanded by our guests to come back. If you are looking for the perfect sound, from a dependable musician, look no further. I highly recommend Ian (and his band if you have the space for it) for any event. He can rock any room, and he can also serenade any audience as well. He also brings an audience with him, and his sound draws in anybody within range. And unlike a lot in his profession; he is dependable and always incredibly easy to work with. Thank you Ian!

Ed Mays Groove Kitchen Band was the best. Our guests loved the music... and were up dancing to every song. Ed didn't know the song that I asked them to play for our first dance, but they looked it up... and yes... they played it for us... and yes... it was beautiful. I would recommend this band if you want your guests to have a good time. This was a party for our 50th Anniversary .... and Ed helped to make it very special. Thank you Ed and your band. We are very happy with Bloomfield Music's service! The 3 piece band we requested included piano, flute, and cello. They sounded wonderful, were very professional, accommodating, and well prepared. They played a mix of classical and contemporary/pop pieces for my husband's 50th birthday party. Highly recommended!

I loved how the singer got out and danced with the crowd in between her sets.. So much energy!! I love Detour!!

          About

I guess that would depend on which service we're referring to here; as far as karaoke goes I feel that it's because I add to the performance of the singer by playing assorted instruments, backing vocals, and an above average mix. These things combine to create a much more authentic feel for a singer. As far as instruction, I use a much more informal and flexible style that I feel is less rigid for a new student and allows for more creativity and enhanced advancement.

          About

We are a mature band that plays at the appropriate volume level for the venue/occasion. We have a relaxed, informal presentation that encourages audience participation.

          Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

          What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How many mariachis can a band have?

A mariachi band for hire can have as many players as you like. Modern mariachi bands typically have a minimum of four players with the trumpet playing a vital musical role along with stringed instruments such as the violin, guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar with a deep body), vihuela (a Spanish stringed guitar) and guitar. Strong vocals are also an important component of mariachi bands for hire, since one or more of the players will be singing during the performance. For a truly spectacular show, you can hire a mariachi band with 15 or more players. The medley of stringed instruments, multiple trumpets, soaring vocals, and even an accordion or harp is powerful and beautiful. Mariachis typically wear the traditional costume of charros — Mexican horsemen. The look is a very regal, monotone suit, often in black or white, with silver adornments and embroidery. Mariachi bands often wear sombreros as well. Traditional mariachi bands were only made up of two or more players, according to a UNESCO report celebrating the cultural heritage of the musical style. The style of music originated in the state of Jalisco. Now the style of music is symbolic of Mexico but is celebrated all over the world, and adds a fabulous vibrancy to any group’s events, parties and weddings.

How much does a mariachi band cost?

A mariachi band will bring your party or event alive with their fabulous costumes, beautiful playing and strong vocals. The cost of a mariachi band for hire will depend on how many players are in the group. Each musician in a performance group needs to be paid, so pricing is usually based on the number of mariachis (musicians), the location of the event (and travel time required), and the length of the performance. Day of the week also affects cost, as does day — Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other major holidays will cost more than regular days. The national average cost for live bands of all types ranges between $740 and $1,200. Depending on where you live and regional rates for performers, you might expect to pay between $65 and $120 per hour, per player. Mariachi groups may have 12-15 players available for performance at one time, depending on your budget. Here are some examples of how the number of players affects average cost:

          • Four mariachis: $300 per hour for weeknights, $400 per hour for weekends.
          • Five mariachis: $350 per hour for weeknights, $400-$450 per hour for weekends. Weekends may have a minimum number of hours.
          • Six mariachis: $400 per hour for weeknights, $450-$500 per hour for weekends.
