Cassandra is the best! Very professional and well trained in the art of makeup and hairstyling. One thing I love about her is that she is always furthering her knowledge of cosmetology by going to classes and taking on new challenges in the industry and making them her own. I would high recommend her to anyone for an event such as a wedding or photo shoot. She's such a doll to collaborate with!

Andreana is a pleasant person to work with, I had a great new experience. Our sessions were time-efficient and productive, and she provided me with a lot of additional information by email. Andreana helped me to look for items that I would never consider trying on before that turned out to fit me quite well. I would recommend her services to everyone.

My experience with Wendy was amazing from start to finish. I loved being able to meet her ahead of time to discuss the project and my expectations. My project was a simple closet clean out/organization. I chose Wendy over the other half dozen people who responded to my job for three simple reasons 1) She was the only person who spelled my name right when replying to me (people if you can't pay attention to details then we can't work together) 2) She didn't try and up sell me from the very beginning like everyone else ("your project is doable, but wouldn't you like to go shopping and see what outfits and colors look good on you") 3) She looked professional in her photo, like she was serious about her business (your Facebook profile photo of you at a party with your friend cut off is not going to work). Back to the project....Wendy is very detailed and has some really nice personal touches along the way (I won't give away all of her secrets). While this was a simple closet clean out it is never easy ladies and gents! There are emotions involved here. Wendy was super encouraging along the way and put me at ease. After removing at least 7 bags of clothes and shoes from my small closet I was left with what looked like a rack straight from a celebrity closet (she organized from white to black and all the colors in between). I wondered where all the amazing clothes we ended up keeping had been all my life! Wait I can answer that.....stuffed between all the crappy clothes I had sitting around. Honestly I now feel like getting rid of the mess in my closet got rid of a small mess in my head-don't judge. I now am excited to get up and get dressed and no longer feel overwhelmed. So, needless to say I would most definitely recommend Wendy for a styling session or a closet clean out. She is a certified Frumpiness Assassin in my book!

Julia is an incredibly tallented hair stylist & makeup artist. I felt so beautiful & at ease on my wedding day, thanks to her. Julia listened to my request, provided a trial hair consultation, and did some magic to make my hair dreams come true. I gave Julia the task of creating a hairstyle that could fit under a motorcycle helmet, could be windblow & stay glamorous for hours. This girl has an eye for style & she is a great support to any bride or bridal party. Oh and did I mention she is fun, lovely, handworking, efficient & works well in a variety of settings including proms, banquets, black tie events, weddings, or any time you want to feel your best.

Christine is a phenomenal stylist and an absolute sweetheart. She’s created hundreds of outfits for me over the six years we’ve been working together, for which I’ve gotten more compliments than I can count, and which have made me feel comfortable and confident in myriad situations, from work events to dates to parties to weekends away with friends. Here’s how it works: sometimes I buy a few new things before our session, and sometimes we go shopping together (Zara, JCrew, Maje, Rag & Bone—she never presses for expensive purchases, although she’s helped me to stop spending scattershot and instead focus on quality). Either way, Christine then integrates the new with what I already have, creating combinations I never would have thought of (after a couple of sessions, she knew my closet better than I did). In this way, I have tons of options for any purchase I make. She takes photos of all the outfits with my camera, so I have a record. Christine’s also encouraged me to try new colors, shapes, and styles I’d never have considered. She can see what does (and doesn’t) look good on me in a way that I can’t. And at each session she gives really helpful advice about possible holes in my wardrobe—a pair of ankle boots that would work with all my pants, or a bag that would pull several outfits together. She’s always on time, she’s honest and straightforward, and she responds quickly to questions and requests. Also, she’s lots of fun to be with, super smart, and incredibly easy to talk to. Seriously, whether you’re not sure how to build a wardrobe, or if you have a bunch of clothes you love but want to remix and see fresh—get in touch with Christine. She’ll help you to look the best you ever have.

Alexis styled my closet and 17 bags to Goodwill later...I am stylin! Alexis helped me weed through my closet assessing my style, providing feedback on what she thought worked and what didn't. Her engagement helped me get rid of some old looks I was hanging on to and provided me with the right wardrobe for work and play. Alexis was on time, easy to work with, and has a fantastic sense of fashion and style for all ages! This was the best present I ever gave myself! Highly Recommend her services.

Audrey Hepburn... Breakfast at Tiffanys... an upcoming semi-formal occasion caused me to want to emulate Audrey's elegant style with my hair and makeup. Aylah's first words in her Thumbtack introduction were " I looove Audrey Hepburn!.." And I knew instantly I found the perfect person to bring out the "glam" in me! During the two hours she set aside for the transformation we chatted and I sipped tea and nibbled on cookies while she painstakingly applied thirty-eight bobby pins, matte foundation and contouring, brow pencil, two new eyelashes, custom-colored lipstick, and the requisite misting of hairspray. One tiara later, I was propelled into the world of little black party dresses, jewels, and opera gloves. The night was magical, and I have Aylah to thank for a timeless look that turned heads. She is an experienced, talented stylist, sensitive to the goals of her client. I had a delightful experience and hope to visit her again soon!

This, quite honestly, was the best investment I have made in myself in my life that I can recall. It all started because I went on a date with someone who told me "if you dressed better, you'd be a real catch" (ouch!). That person didn't get a second date from me but did wake me up to the fact that I needed style help because I had no idea what I was doing. I also didn't really have the patience or interest to figure it out on my own. A friend recommended Styled Seattle, and I worked with Sherri. The best true compliment I can give is that the whole service is BOTH a super professional organization (two offices, electronic invoicing, etc) AND a totally personal human-to-human experience. Sherri came to my house, we spent about 5 hours together--um, not that long when you figure I got a cleaned out closet and a whole new wardrobe out of it. She is an expert who knows when to explain Why something looks good and give instruction, just as she knows when to say "Just trust me." I spent about $1,500 on clothes and about $600 on service. All in all, it was a $2,000 project, but I'm already planning to do again in the fall. Just like any professional work, it's smart to go with the best.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do I find a personal stylist?

To find a fashion consultant, start by browsing portfolios online. Styling is a visual art, so finding a fashion consultant who fits the style you desire is key. Great personal stylists aren’t confined to one style, but if you’re seeking a hipper, fashion-forward vibe, you’d do well to find someone with a modern portfolio, while a fashion consultant with a consistently refined style could be a better fit if you’d prefer a more conservative look. Reading reviews is also helpful for learning more about the fashion consultant. Research their training, background and years of experience. After reviewing websites and Instagram accounts, meet with the stylist in person to learn how well they fit your personality; some fashion consultants offer a free phone consultation prior to hiring. Before hiring, make sure you clearly understand their terms of service and payment.

      What do image consultants do?

Image consultants help people look and feel their best by coaching them on their clothing and beauty choices. An image consultant can be hired for a one-time occasion, such as an awards ceremony, big birthday party or photo shoot. The consultant will recommend clothing, hair and makeup to suit the occasion either using either what the client owns or taking a targeted shopping trip. For a complete fashion consultation, the image consultant will assess your wardrobe, your lifestyle, and what you hope to present to the world, and will then determine the best colors, styles and cuts for you. You can get help streamlining your professional appearance, adjusting your style after a change in body size, solidifying a new look, or finding clothing to fit one area of your life like work or weekends. Image consultants also provide closet edits, going through your clothing and paring out what isn’t right for the look you’re trying to achieve. Personal shopping is another service that image consultants provide. After an image assessment, they can either shop with you or shop on your behalf to find you key pieces you need.

      What is a fashion consultant?

A fashion consultant is a paid professional who will advise you on what to wear and how to wear it to fit your desired lifestyle or career goals. A fashion consultant can provide many services including personal shopping, closet audits, beauty consultations, style consultations and ongoing seasonal services. A fashion consultant often has a design or fashion background (although this is not required) and an innate sense of style. It’s easy to get stuck in a rut with the colors, cuts and designs we think suit us. A fashion consultant comes in with fresh eyes and provides constructive feedback to guide your style choices.

During your initial meeting, your fashion consultant will take stock of your current clothing selection and learn what you hope to achieve. They’ll identify core wardrobe pieces you need, as well as advise you how to wear items together. Many consultants create style lookbooks for their clients explaining things like exactly which shoes to wear with what pants and how to accessorize each look. Fashion consultants are a great option for people who are updating their style due to age, career changes or body changes, or who are just ready for a new look and feel. Most fashion consultants charge by the hour, with some offering packages and others working from a retainer.

      What is a personal shopper?

Personal shoppers take the pain out of having good fashion. Personal shoppers are paid professionals who work with women, men or children who need style assistance. If you are stuck in a fashion rut, are unsure how to dress in a way that flatters your body, need to revamp your image, or want a more professional career look, personal shoppers can help. Personal shoppers identify the look their client wants to achieve and purchase the necessary clothing and accessories to achieve it. The process often begins with an initial consultation with the client to understand their style goals. This consultation may include a closet “audit,” an assessment of the client’s current wardrobe to see what items can be eliminated and what must be purchased to achieve the desired style.

The client and the personal shopper can shop together, selecting items as a team. The personal shopper may also shop on behalf of the client, then bring all items to the client for a final decision. A third option is pre-shopping, where the personal shopper reaches the store(s) ahead of the client and sets aside clothing for the client to try on, expediting the whole process — a win for anyone who hates spending time in the mall. Personal shoppers can also be hired for one-time events such as weddings, vacations or birthdays. You can also enlist a personal shopper to do your gift shopping for you. Overall, a personal shopper is an investment in making good style choices.

How much do wedding makeup artists cost?

A wedding means love, celebration and tons of wedding photos. Professional wedding makeup artists have you looking your best on your big day and forever after in your wedding photos. The national average cost for a wedding makeup artist is $70-$100, although this price can increase based on your location, the extent of the makeup services and the reputation of the makeup artist. Most wedding makeup artists offer discounts to brides who book group services for their maids, mothers and flower girls at the same time. Wedding makeup artists who also do wedding hair usually offer package rates for hair and makeup combos. Here are some examples of average wedding makeup pricing:

      • Bridal makeup: $85-$125. Pricing often includes full face, eyes, lips, brows and false eyelashes. Airbrush makeup may be an additional $20 or more.
      • Bridal hair and makeup: $150-$200.
      • Bridesmaid and bridal party makeup: $50-$100 per person.
      • Bridesmaid hair and makeup: $100-$150.
      • Flower girl makeup: $25-$35.
      • Trial sessions: $60-$120, depending on the makeup artist. Some charge their full rate and others charge a partial rate for trial makeup services.
      • Hourly rates to stay on and keep makeup touched up throughout reception: $35-$75 per hour.
      • Travel fees: 50 cents to $1 per additional mile beyond a set radius — such as 50 miles.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
