My 10 year old daughter loved the kids self defense class. I was pleased with how well they presented the material in a serious but not scary way. I know my daughter feels empowered to fight back if she ever had to.
I have been training with Mr. Rainey for almost 2.5 years, beginning at the end of March 2013. I believe this will lend some credibility to this review. Mr. Rainey knows his art, and has direct lineage back to the founder of the American Kenpo system, SGM Ed Parker. Mr. Rainey is very much attuned to how to teach, encourage, and develop the skills of beginning students, just as he is for the advanced. This is regardless of whether the student comes to American Kenpo from another system (as in my case) or is completely new to the martial arts. It is worth clarifying that Mr. Rainey teaches is a "martial art" not a "sport". There is a big difference between the two and there are not so many schools that do this anymore. If one's interest is to learn effective self defense, this is the place. With that being said, American Kenpo is also a very complete/comprehensive martial art system that transcends just personal self defense. It is also about self discipline, personal growth, the development of greater self confidence, and physical health. After devoting over 40 years to the martial arts myself, most notably training and teaching Taekwon-do (before choosing to start all over again with Mr. Rainey and the American Kenpo system), I can certainly attest to Mr. Rainey teaching abilities and the overall effectiveness of the American Kenpo system of martial arts. My only regret has been that I did not come to know the Kenpo system, and Mr. Rainey, 42 years ago when my own martial arts journey began.

A great place to get in shape and learn self defense!
I had known James for about a year before I started training with him. He was a customer at a coffee shop I worked at, and he was just "the weird trainer dude who put MCT oil in his coffee". :) Then when I started training with him, I realized how beneficial his knowledge base could be for more areas of my life than just lifting or physical movement. He has a vast knowledge of how the human body works, which influences his training technique, how he coaches you through tougher movements, how he helps you heal, and how he gives advice on other areas of life (nutrition, habits, self discipline, life in general). Some of James' coaching may feel silly and weird and uncomfortable at first, but once you start following his plan and guidance, you see yourself and your capabilities change. I came into James' classes barely being able to hold myself up in a plank, and using very light weights just for basic movements. One of the last classes I did with him I was deadlifting 175 pounds and doing hand stands! After 6 months of training! (I honestly never believed I could do either of those things!) I think Minneapolis definitely lost out on James moving away, but I'm glad more people get to train with him!
I started Krav a few weeks ago intending just to get my feet wet in self defense, but I'm getting way more than that! It feels great to get in a couple more hard workouts during the week, and I'm getting to know some fantastic people! I began training with Kye two years ago when I was a freshman in college. I had never done anything like martial arts before, but hearing of his lessons gave me the opportunity to break out of my shell and achieve that dream. His lessons were beginner friendly and I never felt looked down upon for being a girl, a small fry, etc. Soon, I could use my body in ways I never knew I could, and was able to puruse my own individual path as a martial artist. It was good routine excercise and built a lot of self-confidence. I learned a lot of good self-defense for everyday life as well as awesome moves for practice matches. As a teacher, Kye is patient, charismatic, fun and willing to go the extra mile to help his students learn. I would recommend Kye's system for anyone wishing to pursue their martial arts dreams!
Brent is a great teacher and a great mentor. He runs a great dojo for adults and kids.
Jeff has been training with me for more than three years. He assists me in teaching martial arts students and students in the woman's self defense class. He is a certified third degree black belt in a sister Okinawan karate system. He is passionate in teaching the arts and relates to the students very well. He is able to break down the techniques and teaches the concepts and principles in an easy to understand way. He is organized and reliable and always thinking about how to improve what is accepted norm.
A little over a year ago, I made the decision that my daughter and I would learn how to properly defend ourselves against an attacker should this unfortunate event ever present itself. We decided to take training from Joanne Factor of Strategic Living in Seattle. It has been 11 months, and a handful of classes later, and we feel 110% confident that we could protect ourselves if necessary. Joanne Factor is amazing. She not only describes and teaches us in easy to understand instruction, but she also teaches us the physical and mental skills necessary to properly disable an attacker. I give Joanne Factor the highest rating possible and highly recommend everyone and anyone take her training classes ! Even in the face of serious issues, Joanne also makes classes fun and exciting. Joanne's classes definitely should be taken by any and all women and teens ready to take off to college. Thanks Joanne !!
Tim has helped me work toward my fitness goals. We train outdoors which is great, so we can enjoy the summer weather and get a good workout in at the same time. Tim is kind and easygoing while still pushing you. This was my first time seeking out a trainer so wasn't sure what to expect. I'm glad I found Tim as he's not intimidating and made the experience positive! I would definitely recommend him!
