My husband and I hired Ernesto and his team to build a rock retaining wall in our extremely sloped backyard and we could not be happier with the results. Not only did Ernesto help with the design, like explaining what rocks would look best and where the stairs should go. He also was extremely mindful of the technical aspects of the project, ensuring proper drainage, setting a study base, etc. As a result, we now have a very sturdy and beautiful rock wall. Ernesto and his team are very hardworking, respectful, and honest. We would highly recommend Duran Landscaping for any backyard or landscaping project!

Carlos and team did a good job cutting our trees and charged a fair price. He answered emails promptly and stopped by to provide a quote. They showed up mid-morning instead of after 4:30 as agreed, luckily my husband was home unexpectedly. Would hire again for future landscaping needs.

The Apple Landscaping Crew showed up on-time, did a great job with my jungle of a yard, and even blew off the driveway and deck without having to ask. I am genuinely impressed with both their skills and work quality. Couldn't be happier with their work!!!

I'm a real estate broker who was getting bids for my seller to get his yard cleaned up and his property on the market. The yard is large and completely overgrown. I got a total of 5 bids for my seller to pick from and met with all the landscapers personally. Alex had a very reasonable bid and started immediately. He powered through to get the property cleaned up and show ready. I'll definitely recommend him to my other clients.

I was very fortunate to work with G&E Landscape Contractor. I was impressed with Polo's excellent customer service. He was quick to respond any questions or doubts I had & would give suggestions of things that would work better. Along with his suggestions he would give reasons why it would be a better idea. He never tried to upsale. On contrary, he would help find better deals. Polo & his team did a wonderful job in an efficient timely manner. They surpassed my expectaions. I can't recommend G&E enough.

They even went a little bit above and beyond by helping out with landscape fabric and some edging. I would definitely use him again.

Brian was just fantastic! We took 6 bids for our new deck project and we are absolutely thrilled we decided to hire them. We were confident in their ability from the first few minutes. Brian and Mike had great design suggestions, we really appreciated their input and the education. They worked with great skill, swiftly, within our budget and most importantly built a beautiful deck! Do not hesitate to hire these guys- you will not be disappointed!!

Cleo Landscaping did an excellent job of quickly transforming very rough and weed filled front and back yards, into a fully lanndscaped property proud to show off. Both Mario and Clio were easy to work with and very responsive to our requests, and with follow up visits. Their workmanship was of excellent quality, and the range of skills absolutely amazing. I would definitely use them for additional projects and highly recommend their work.

I can't say enough good things about Rick and his crew at Pacific Pavers. After a great meeting and consultation, Rick listened to our design ideas, offered suggestions, took measurements and sent us a competitive bid. In the hottest weeks of this summer Rick & his crew set to work. Their attention to detail and dedication to producing a quality product is unsurpassed. They put in long hours of hard work, meticulously preparing the foundation, cutting and laying the pavers, transforming a backyard that was unremarkable into a work of art. I am not joking, the craftsmanship is obvious in the details. Every visitor has been impressed with the beauty and quality of workmanship. We have an outdoor space that we enjoy. Three of our neighbors wanted to know what company we had used and immediately contacted Rick for bids and then hired him to transform their yards as well. I can honestly say this is probably the best purchase we have made. Thank you Rick, Saul (foreman and definitely a master craftsman), and his crew. We are amazed at the quality of work that you did in the heat of the summer and coming in exactly on time. If you need a pavers company hire Pacific Pavers, you won't regret it. I tried to upload pictures unsuccessfully twice and lost my text so I am sorry not to include a photo.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.
