Introduction: I'm obsessed with the cognitive psychology of expertise: how do people become world-class players, or tennis stars, or GRE virtuosos? I've developed my curriculum around the answers modern psychologists have given to those questions: employing systems, for example, that engage students deeply in deliberate practice, or make it easy to remember everything you learn until long after you take the test. My uncle — a firefighter — once told me that he enjoys the efficacy of his job: there's a fire, they call him, there's no more fire! Sitting down with people to prepare for the GRE is similar: there's (say) a fundamental misunderstanding about how to think about a dozen math problems, I meet with people, there's no more misunderstanding! Helping people turn hard work into substantial score improvement is one of life's hidden joys.
