We recently had a new furnace and air conditioner installed by Midwest Heating & Cooling, and it was a great experience. From our initial call to the completion of the job, they were so easy and professional to work with. Our installation happened exactly as Brad explained it would and there were no hidden charges or fees. Very happy we chose Midwest.

We are selling our home and the buyer's inspector implied that our older Lennox furnace was a disaster waiting to happen. Called D&K and the owner, Adam came and inspected and tuned our furnace. This would have been a great opportunity for someone less ethical to try and scare us into an expensive furnace replacement. Adam is as honest as the day is long and he told us the truth - nothing wrong with the furnace. Very competent and honest, can't recommend highly enough.

Paul from STVU set up an initial meeting with me with his technicians and they explained the work that would be necessary after inspecting and determining the root cause of my Air Conditioning problem. I opted to purchase a new furnace through them because mine was really old. I feel the quality of product I chose was good for my property and the work that they performed was excellent. Previous work completed created an issue and Igor was able to find out what the problem was after just a short period and my AC has been running perfectly since! I absolutely encourage anyone looking for HVAC service to contact STVU and set up an appointment to see what they can do for you. Highly recommended!!!!

Mark was able to schedule the work I needed done quickly; he replaced a light fixture, repaired another in the basement, and very honestly determined that the primary request for service on a non-working deck outlet was in fact 'user' error and not an outlet malfunction! He completed the work efficiently and for the amount quoted. I plan to have him come back to perform some long put-off electrical work soon.

Our furnace was making some funny noises, and Kevin came over for a thorough inspection. After discovering that the heat exchanger was shot, we decided to replace the furnace. Kevin installed a new 2-stage furnace for us at a very reasonable price. He is considerate, respectful and forthcoming, and he truly cares about his customers' needs and providing them with good value. If you want your HVAC needs taken care of without having to cut through thickets of salesmen fluff, Kevin is your guy.

Hired this company to install a new furnace. First of all they showed up on the scheduled time like they had said, the tech was very knowledgeable about the equipment and gave me very reasonable prices! They also have a great warranty! The tech gave me a variety of furnace manufacturers that I could choose from rather than just selling me on one unit. I will definitely be calling this company back for all my HVAC needs! Will recommend to everyone I know!

Jeff is a life saver! Our heat went out during the night and Jeff was available right away. He quickly found the issue and fixed it (he happened to have the part in his truck) and he even made a fix so the furnace would run better in general. He made some additional recommendations and replaced our thermostat. He took the time to walk us through the repairs and tested the furnace and thermostat settings a few times to make sure it was turning on properly. So grateful for his quick response, straight talk, and very reasonable pricing! We will be calling Jeff in the future to service our furnace and AC!!

I had severe heavy traffic area and tea stains on my white carpeting in my house. TopKleen was able to make them look like brand new again in a very short amount of time. Their service is fast, good and professional. Their work was so good I even had them clean the carpeting at my business as well. I would recommend that if you are looking for a great deal with excellent quality, then you must contact TopKleen for your carpet cleaning needs.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. How much does it cost to have your furnace serviced?

When your furnace isn’t regularly serviced it can operate less efficiently. This increases your energy bills and also prevents your furnace from keeping your home as warm as you like. Keep your furnace properly maintained with regular service. The national average furnace service cost is between $60 and $80. Companies may offer tuneup specials that cover all the necessary testing, tightening, measuring and cleaning to keep your equipment running at top efficiency. If you have a newer system, furnace service costs may be covered by your warranty. Outside of warranty, a basic tuneup might start at $58 and a more advanced maintenance cleaning could be over $120. Here are some signs your furnace may need service:

      • The furnace has stopped functioning entirely.
      • The temperature cannot be regulated.
      • Rooms in the home are either too hot or too cold.
      • The heated air coming from the furnace smells like gas.
      • The thermostat isn’t working.
      • Strange noises are coming from the furnace.

How much will it cost me to replace my air conditioner?

If your AC system is in need of replacement, the national average air conditioner installation costs range from $2,930 to $3,670. Costs can vary greatly depending on whether you are replacing a wall or window unit or a central air system. A central air system is connected to ductwork that runs throughout your house and pumps cooled air into your various rooms via vents and registers. A central air conditioning system is far more costly than wall or window units. Selecting a central AC system that has a high seasonal energy-efficiency ratio (SEER) will likely lower both your carbon footprint and your utility bill. The type of AC system you select, where you live in the country, and the regional costs of HVAC work, duct removal and replacement, and ductwork repairs that are needed are some of the main factors that affect the cost of new air conditioner installation. Here are some examples of average costs for installing forced-air systems.

      • Install Lennox 16 SEER single-stage AC unit: $5,743
        • Removing and disposing of the old furnace, moving and reconnecting the water heater, and installing a 3.5-ton gas furnace. The job took 18 hours of labor.
      • Installation of a new 14 SEER single-range cooling system: $4,000-$6,000
      • Installation of a new 16 SEER two-range cooling system: $6,000-$8,000
      • Installation of a new 20 SEER variable capacity cooling system: $8,000-$12,000

How much will it cost me to replace my furnace?

The national average for furnace replacement is between $1,800 and $2,500. The cost can range dramatically higher depending on the model of furnace you select, any repair work you require, your location and the cost of installation. Furnace installation costs can be more than the furnace itself due to the cost of doing business and the expertise needed to install the HVAC equipment. Installing a new furnace generally requires technical know-how and the proper tools and licensing. It’s best to hire a pro and budget for furnace installation rather than risk potentially unsafe DIY installation. This will ensure your home’s safety. Check to see if your HVAC contractor has the proper licensing to do the job. If you need duct repair or replacement, expect to pay more for your furnace installation costs. The price for duct repair could be an hourly rate ranging on average anywhere from $85 to $150 per hour, with additional costs for parts.

How much does it cost to have your furnace cleaned?

To keep your furnace in good working order it’s important to have it regularly cleaned. The national average furnace cleaning cost ranges from $60 to $80, though prices can vary greatly based on where you live in the country and what your furnace maintenance includes. An HVAC company may have different rates for different levels of furnace maintenance. For example, one company may offer general furnace maintenance for $79 and advanced maintenance for $138. Another company may offer a 38-point maintenance check for $89 and a 64-point maintenance check for $178. According to Energy.gov, a standard furnace cleaning and maintenance visit can include:

      • Checking the vent connection pipe and chimney
      • Checking the physical integrity of the heat exchanger
      • Adjusting the controls to provide optimum air temperatures
      • Checking the combustion chamber for cracks
      • Testing for carbon monoxide (CO)
      • Adjusting the blower control and supply-air temperature
      • Cleaning and oiling the blower
      • Removing soot and corrosion from the furnace
      • Checking the fuel input and flame characteristics
      • Sealing the connections between the furnace and the main ducts
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
