I hired Tanya as a color consultant. We were finishing a significant home remodeling project and wanted to choose new paint colors for 5 rooms and all hallways in our home. I am terrible at choosing paint colors so to avoid trial and error with painting so many rooms I contacted Tanya. I had looked at several interior design websites prior to contacting Tanya but her "core values" really struck home with me. She was prompt returning my calls, emails, and following up with me. She came to my home and it was the most productive 90 minutes I have spent with someone in a long time. She helped to show me colors that would fit with the style of our home and our furniture while listening to my desire to brighten our home. After she left I felt confident with the color selections. We have since painted all of the rooms and love all of the colors. They turned out beautifully. She was very easy to work with and I would definitely hire her again and recommend her services to others. Thank you Tanya!

Cynthia helped me create a beautiful and functional kitchen remodel in my home in Madison. She got to know my family and our style and also surprised me with some colors and spacial designs I hadn't thought of. She was always on time and got back to my calls and emails right away. She was very professional yet very personal. She stayed within my budget of $20,000. I would definitely recommend Pure Dwelling to anyone and hope to work with her again.

We are so glad that we went with ColorScapes to have our kitchen backsplash installed. Mary was able to get it done on a lower budget( compared to Home depot )even without having to compromising on the quality of work or the materials! She got it done on time as promised and even went out of her way to help me with other odd jobs at home. Thank you Mary!

We were having a very difficult time trying to pick colors for our newly purchased condo. Built in the early 90's, it was full of "pickled" cabinets and woodwork! The walls were trended toward the salmon color which made the woodwork look PINK!! We called Rooted Interiors and Rachel was WONDERFUL. She brought her entire color sample wheel. With her help we were able to achieve a warm, rich environment in our new place. We love the color she chose for our great room so much that we also used it the the lower level were there was more " pickled" built-ins! It looks great! Her idea for our kitchen was also a winner. The cobbled brown was an excellent choice against the light cabinets, accented by caliente, a deep terracotta color on the window bays! Her ideas helped make our home warm and welcoming! We couldn't have been more pleased with her design and color assistance! She is friendly, helpful and extremely easy to work with. She listens to your thoughts and then expands on them to make everything mesh into a beautiful design. She will be helping us more on our future projects! Thanks, Rooted Interiors for a job well done!

Redesign and Decorating my entire house of 3300 square feet. Ashley is amazing! She has an eye for what goes together and can pick up items from sales that match and put things together that I would never have thought of. She is a hard worker and she gets the job done. She has an eye for detail and will make sure every last detail is attended too. My house has turned out beautiful and I could have never done it without her expertise and her hard work.

Sue was great to work with! My now-wife and I worked with her when we had just moved in together and needed to furnish and decorate a nearly-empty house. Sue was great at listening, showing us lots of options, and helping us figure out what exactly we liked. She was also super-responsive when we had minor problems with one of the furniture pieces, and got it addressed quickly at no cost. Great experience, and we love the way our house looks!

Sarah is also fun and keeps a watchful eye on the budget. We shall miss her when our home is done BUT she will be our one and only stop the next time we need decorating services!

Laura did the decorations for my wedding this October. It was beautiful! She even hand made some of the decorations for the event. The style was just what I was looking for (fall rustic). I would definitely recommend her to everyone that is looking for a wedding decorator or any other event planning! Thanks Laura!

Sarina painted all of my 25-year-old pink-tinted maple kitchen cabinets a beautiful distressed sage green color. She did a meticulous job and we're really happy with the results. It requires a lot of detail work and Sarina did a fabulous job.

The result of my work is the result of my extensive training and experience. I keep track of my Staging statistics. Currently 80% of the homes that I Stage receive accepted offers within 7 days of being Staged and placed on the market. National statistics point out that Staged homes sell for between 5% - 17% more than non-Staged homes. The Home Staging industry is not regulated, therefore, there are many people who are entering the field, calling themselves Stagers, but have no training. I have completed rigorous training through the top Staging organization, StagedHomes, that was created by Barb Schwarz, who is the creator of the Home Staging industry. I have earned the Accredited Staging Professional Master® accreditation which is the highest designation in the Home Staging industry. I belong to the Wisconsin chapter of the International Association of Home Staging Professionals and have been a board member with the organization since 2008. By being a member of IAHSP, I am held to a code of ethics and held to a high standard of producing top quality Staging work. I also have professional memberships in other real estate groups so that I am constantly staying on top of the trends and current issues in the industry. I also have a degree in interior design and space planning which contributes strongly to basic elements of Staging planning and design. We Stage with a high level of detail to color, accessorizing, de-cluttering, floor plan arrangement, furniture style, which all contribute to creating the spaces that attract buyers.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

    • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
    • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
    • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
    • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

    • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
    • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
    • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
    • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
