FAQs
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I am a full member of Assosication of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT) which basically has a network of different trainers all across the country, provides webinars, conventions, and the like. I also read anything that would look interesting, such as BARK magazine, or FETCH! I also have plenty of books, such as an official AKC book with all types of breeds, their temperaments, etc. So, I am pretty much up-to-date on my knowledge.
- How did you get started doing this type of work?
Well, ever since I was younger, I've always wanted to do something involving animals. I had thought about being a farm veterinarian, vet tech, or a regular veterinarian. However, those options would require a lot of school; and a lot of math (both which would drive me insane!) So, instead I decided to do something that I would both enjoy, and have much success in. Also, my cousin is a role model of mine, and she's a full time Dog Obedience Trainer. So, I guess you can say it's a family thing :P
- What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
Are they certified? Don't let them tell you there is no certification or verification because there is. Check out the PPG, APDT, IAABC, If they've been "training for years", ask what the last seminar they attended or even what books they've recently read. You want your trainer to have the most up to date and current information on learning theory and training. If they mention "pack leader", "alpha" choke chains, pinch collars, (prong collars) or shock collars (e-collars) RUN. That is all outdated, old fashioned techniques and you're probably dealing with someone who is self taught or learned to train dogs by watching tv. Please do not let anyone hurt your dog. You do not need to "show him who's boss", eat before be does, walk thru doors ahead of your dog. Again, that's been PROVEN to be inaccurate. Remember... your dog trusts you to teach him what he doesn't know and to protect him from anyone who wants you to punish or hurt him. Please, do not betray that trust. Find a trainer who is kind, educated, and uses positive reinforcement.
