Replaced all my door locks. Did a great job. One of the door locks didn't work properly so I can't lock the deadbolt.

The guys came out last week to paint our trim, garage door and front door. It was a rainy week, and a pretty challenging one to paint outdoors. However, they guys got the job done and it looks great. Communication was good. Application is totally professional. They used quality products and did the job well. Overall, the paint job adds a lot of value to our property and it was money well spent!

Communication was fantastic. I just had a major surgery and pretty much did everything over the Internet. I explained I would not be able to go outside or get up to answer the door more then once. The gentleman came right when they said he would. He never even came to the door. Just got to work. You would not have even known he was there. When he was completely finished he came to the door and wrapped everything up in a very professional & timely fashion. He gave me a full report of any issues with my gutters. Also, provided pictures. I will use LC Pro Cleaners again for sure. I would recommend them as well. Thanks LC !!

The problem was with my side garage door causing locking problems. Though everything looked level and plumb there were some very slight tolerance differences. We took the strike plates off and cut the the nails holding the door frame to the rough opening. There were also two screws, one top and one bottom that were also removed from the strike side. The brick molding from the strike side and top were then removed allowing us to tap the top of the strike side in toward the garage and then tested the locking mechanisms for alignment and ease. Once in proper place, we secured the strike side top and bottom to hold it in place. When we had removed the brick molding we discovered that once the door was properly aligned, the sheathing on the strike side stuck out approximately a 1/4 inch. It became clear that the original contractor failed to square up the hinge side of the door opening with the strike side of the door opening thus there existed a slight torqueing of the door in the opening. With that, and the addition of cold and heat expansion and contraction, locking the door was problematic. We managed to trim down a 3/4 by 1/4 area of the sheathing so the brick mold would sit flat on the sheathing and door frame keeping the appropriate setback from the edge. We were also able to accomplish the work without affecting the siding at all. I had a piece of brick molding consistent with what was there so we were able to replace the strike side molding which I cut on my compound miter saw. Everything fit in perfectly and the door is easily closed and locked. What remains is some slight shimming, recaulking the top and strike side, and another coat of paint on the trim.

Rick was great and very accommodating. I had a new aluminum frame put onto my garage door, was sick of having to paint wood. The workmanship is extremely professional and pricing was very reasonable. Will definitely use service again with other projects around the house and would recommend Rick to anyone needing a great contractor.

Martin was laid back and easy to work with. He installed vynal siding on our garage that had come with the house when we bought it. The previous owner never put it up. Unfortunately, an important piece was missing that we were unaware of so Martin put in an order for it so that it would match. He and his crew were able to install everything except the one wall that needed the missing piece. So we had one wall not don't for about 2 weeks, until the piece arrived and we were able to schedule a time for Martin to come back out and finish the job. Not a big deal, he was able to trim in the door and windows to make up for lost time and we couldn't be happier. We also have a bunch of mature hostas and other plants around the garage and Martin and his crew were very careful, nothing was damaged it's like they weren't even there. Good guy, with an honest upfront price. Would recommend.

Jorge has so many talents, I ended up using him for most of a major house rehab. This was the sixth house I've rehabbed and it was great to have one contractor knowledgeable about so many things so I didn't have to wait on each specialty. Jorge drywalled, laid a wood laminate floor, put up baseboard, put in 2 toilets, ran plumbing and put in a new dishwasher, put up baseboard, ran a water line to the refrigerator, put in a new kitchen sink and countertop, leveled a wobbly ceiling fan, hung closet doors, as well as other things. He was there when he said he would be, worked until the job was done, and was pleasant to work with. I highly recommend him and will use him again.

I had requested a quote to replace a garage access door and another minor quick repair. When he came to replace the door I asked about 3 more quick projects that could be done at a later time. He looked at what I wanted done. He said it would be easy to fix these additional 3 items the same day. He actually completed 6 projects the same day and came in under his original quote for just the garage access door. Kyle responds to my emails and texts usually within 24 hours, since the project wasn't urgent I was impressed with the speed he responds. I still have a list of projects that need to be completed and a major item that has been sitting for years to be taken care of. I have been looking for a new handyman for 2 years since my former handyman retired. I now have found my new handyman.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How does a locksmith open a locked door?

Locksmiths use specialized tools and techniques to open your door in the case of lockouts or lost keys. Trained locksmiths can pick your door lock with lock-picking tools such as a rake, a tension wrench, a half diamond or a hook. They may use a technique called bumping, which will work on pin tumbler locks, or as a last resort they may use a drill to remove your existing lock. The national average locksmith price ranges between $70 and $100. A locksmith can also replace your current lock system, re-key your locks if you have lost your keys, repair a broken lock, install a deadlock and more. Locksmiths not only help with front doors, they can help if you are locked out of your car, locked out of your mailbox, locked out of your shed … you name it. There may be an additional charge for emergency after-hours locksmith services. Check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to have a deadbolt lock installed?

Installing a new deadbolt lock can improve your home security, especially if you think your current lock system has been compromised or there are unaccounted-for copies of your house keys in circulation. A professional locksmith can install a new deadbolt for you in a matter of hours. The national average locksmith price ranges from $70 to $100. Locksmith prices for installing deadbolts may be higher based on whether the professional provides the lock or you have it on hand, how many components the locking system includes, and how long the installation takes. The cost to purchase a lock yourself from a big-box store can range from approximately $70 to $225 or more, depending on quality and materials. Higher-security locks often take longer and therefore cost more to install.

How much does it cost to make a new key for a car?

Locksmiths’ prices for making new car keys can vary depending on the make of your car as well as the time of day and location. The national average locksmith price ranges from $70 to $100, but duplicating a key may cost as little as $30, while extraction a key stuck in the ignition, cutting a new key and programming the fob can cost much more.

You might need a new car key if you have lost your key, the key broke in the ignition, the key is bent or damaged, or you just want a duplicate in case of emergency. You can request a duplicate of a key you have on hand, or you can have a new key made or cut if you have lost your original car keys. If you need to replace lost keys, you’ll need to first provide proof that you are the owner of the car along with the vehicle identification number (VIN). If you’re just locked out of your car but don’t need a key made, a locksmith may charge $65 to get you back in. Locksmith car key services are often far more affordable than dealership prices for new keys.

How much does it cost for a car locksmith?

There are several reasons you may need a car locksmith. You may be locked out of your car (either with the keys inside or with no keys at all), you may have lost your car keys and need a new key, or you may want to make a duplicate car key. The national average locksmith price ranges from $70 to $100. Getting locked out of your car can be scary and overwhelming — especially if it’s cold and dark out. Fortunately, professional locksmiths provide round-the-clock assistance to help people in these circumstances.

Car lockouts are one of the main reasons people need a locksmith. Your locksmith’s price can depend on the type of car you have, the time of day (or night) it is, and where you are located. Locksmith pricing may be based on a flat rate, or pricing may be quoted to you after the locksmith determines the circumstances. For example, a flat rate for a car lockout could be $65 for standard vehicles. That price could be higher for after-hours or long-distance service, or service during extreme weather. If you have entirely lost your car keys, a locksmith can make you a new car key, but first they must verify that you are the owner of the car. Locksmiths can even program new car key fobs for you — often at a lower price than a dealership.
