I sought Mr. Novi out after taking a long hiatus from piano. I have had many piano teachers but Mr. Novi is definitely one of the most fun and enthusiastic teachers I've had. I have had many years of classical piano instruction but am completely new to jazz. Mr. Novi will give me suggestions on new pieces to learn, but ultimately leaves choosing what I learn up to me, no matter what style I want to learn (classical, jazz, rock n' roll, etc). Because of this I never see practicing as a chore since I am only playing the pieces that I truly enjoy. Mr. Novi is a fantastic musician himself, it's very inspiring to listen to him play! I would absolutely recommend Mr. Novi for anyone interested in studying piano.

I have always regretted giving up playing guitar when I was a teenager. When my teenage son started playing bass in his schools jazz band I was motivated to see if I could play again. I struggling for months attempting to use the internet and learn on my own before meeting Ken Fought while he was playing at a friends wedding. I was so impressed with his artistry with the guitar that I scheduled lessons for both my son and I. Ken has helped rekindle my passion for music and continues to work with me in improving my skill and confidence in playing my guitar.

Bill is an amazing coach and person. He uses all his life experience as well as his profound vocal skill and experience to enhance the process. His style is much different than mine (he is a world class opera singer, and I'm more of a raspy "rock" guy), but he addresses those differences head-on and we make progress where we can and it's fun and beneficial all at the same time. I've always been a bit skeptical of voice coaching, thinking you either have the "pipes" or you don't, but Bill shares technique and perspective that anyone who uses their voice extensively can be helped by. Cheers to Bill!

Kathryn was exactly what I envisioned when I set out to find a jazz singer for my father in law's birthday party. Her voice is seriously gorgeous and she was very easy to work with. She was flexible with me throughout our time planning the gig and was able to accommodate all of my requests. While her song list is quite vast, there were a few special tunes she specifically learned for this event and they sounded fabulous. She found the perfect accompaniment in a very talented guitar player as well. Throughout the time Kathryn performed and for hours afterwards I received compliments from other guests for finding such a talented duo. The men and women alike were very impressed with the quality of music, song selections, appearance, and demeanor of both musicians. Everyone thought the music really added something special to the party. Most importantly, my father in law was absolutely amazed with what wound up being the perfect gift for him. He was very impressed and I was so happy to see his face when Kathryn sang one of the songs she especially learned for us. He'll never forget it. I'd hire Kathryn again in a heartbeat.

Artist collective is a very professional business that has the musician in their best interest. I personally have worked with them and it was so nice to have them take care of the "business" end, so I could concentrate on the creative end with my band. AC set us up with a photo/video shoot and it was a success! Highly recommended by us!!

I was a beginner guitarist when I met Pete. Six months later I was already playing through some of my favorite pop and classic rock songs. Pete's also taught me how to write my own songs, and we've also recorded on occasion. I'd have to say that songwriting is my favorite part about playing guitar, and I'm glad that I've got a few originals "under my belt" now.

Nick and his mate, Sam showed up on time....ready to work and continued to play three sets during a three hour period. This is my first time hiring a band for my personal party and I could not have worked with a better pair. I will definitely use him again. Well worth the money. Nice guys and open to my inexperienced suggestions. Lol! And I haven't even mention the quality of their music (jazz) was outstanding. They were the hit and highlight of the party.

We really enjoyed having Maxwell and his band at our holiday party every year since 2014. They played all the songs we requested and kept their performance at a reasonable volume.

The EcoLimes are great musicians. They have a fun sound with lots of interesting mash-ups of popular songs. They were easy to book, showed up on time and took care of their own set-up and tear-down. They took longer breaks than agreed upon.

Over the years, I've had the privilege of playing in multiple bands with Joshua. His music theory based vocabulary is always cerebral. But instead of coming across as "speaking over one's head" it actually helps you to connect the dots! He can speak and teach like a college professor, or at an easier to grasp level... say, 3rd grade. Being around him, I've learned many important music theory items by osmosis. Such as knowing my G## from my A, and the difference in the notes between a Bb Ionian mode and an F Mixolydian!

Lloyd Stephens and his band are an absolutely amazing group of artists. Their sound is so much fun to dance along with, yet it remains beautiful and cheerful. Lloyd's voice had every one of my guests wanting more. The bands funky beats kept the crowd tight on the dance floor. The whole band drove an hour and a half from Milwaukee, WI to Franklin Park, IL to perform. They were punctual, polite, and friendly. We had a lot going on with other artists performing but the band kept their patience through a 6 hour hire time plus a two hour set up. We hired the Lloyd Stephens Band to perform at our wedding and could not have been happier. Truly Awesome and One of a Kind. Thank You So Much Lloyd!!!!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How many mariachis can a band have?

A mariachi band for hire can have as many players as you like. Modern mariachi bands typically have a minimum of four players with the trumpet playing a vital musical role along with stringed instruments such as the violin, guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar with a deep body), vihuela (a Spanish stringed guitar) and guitar. Strong vocals are also an important component of mariachi bands for hire, since one or more of the players will be singing during the performance. For a truly spectacular show, you can hire a mariachi band with 15 or more players. The medley of stringed instruments, multiple trumpets, soaring vocals, and even an accordion or harp is powerful and beautiful. Mariachis typically wear the traditional costume of charros — Mexican horsemen. The look is a very regal, monotone suit, often in black or white, with silver adornments and embroidery. Mariachi bands often wear sombreros as well. Traditional mariachi bands were only made up of two or more players, according to a UNESCO report celebrating the cultural heritage of the musical style. The style of music originated in the state of Jalisco. Now the style of music is symbolic of Mexico but is celebrated all over the world, and adds a fabulous vibrancy to any group’s events, parties and weddings.

How much does a mariachi band cost?

A mariachi band will bring your party or event alive with their fabulous costumes, beautiful playing and strong vocals. The cost of a mariachi band for hire will depend on how many players are in the group. Each musician in a performance group needs to be paid, so pricing is usually based on the number of mariachis (musicians), the location of the event (and travel time required), and the length of the performance. Day of the week also affects cost, as does day — Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other major holidays will cost more than regular days. The national average cost for live bands of all types ranges between $740 and $1,200. Depending on where you live and regional rates for performers, you might expect to pay between $65 and $120 per hour, per player. Mariachi groups may have 12-15 players available for performance at one time, depending on your budget. Here are some examples of how the number of players affects average cost:

      • Four mariachis: $300 per hour for weeknights, $400 per hour for weekends.
      • Five mariachis: $350 per hour for weeknights, $400-$450 per hour for weekends. Weekends may have a minimum number of hours.
      • Six mariachis: $400 per hour for weeknights, $450-$500 per hour for weekends.
