I cannot say enough good things about Dave. I purchased a fixer-upper with many electrical problems and I needed a service upgrade. He updated my electrical service and fixed wiring done by a "handyman". Dave repaired things that were not on the original quote for no additional charge. He even repaired a gutter and taped up my dryer vent connection. I didn't ask him to; he just saw that it needed to be done. Dave thoroughly explained what he was doing and why and left all the work areas clean. I will definitely hire him for future jobs and I highly recommend his services.

Paul came that same day and gave us a very helpful description of the nature of the two problems we had and informed us of some preventative issues that needed attention. He was back the next day and was equally informative about how he solved each issue. was very respectful, and his price seemed reasonable for the amount of repair work done and the attention to detail he gave each repair.

Very satisfied. Hard to find people who will come to your home and repair furniture, in this case it involved replacing a broken recliner release cable. Heirloom Repair also found the correct part, which we were unable to do. Great work at a reasonable cost.

Very last minute we needed help and fast with a drain issue! Michael Hood was quick in response and quote and was even able to fit us into their busy schedule in less than 1 hour (as they were working within the area). The original problem was more than we knew and Michael was straight forward and made sure we were aware of all the options before moving forward. His team was professional and kept us in the loop every step of the way through the repair process. Prices were fantastic, work was done meticulously taking every effort to get the job done quickly, efficiently, and with care. Our family is very thankful that Michael Hood and his team made a difficult issue look easy- peasy! Thank you for all your hard work. We know where to look when we have any issues in the future!!

I called and spoke to Brian, the contractor, on a Monday about a custom mailbox that I needed to be constructed on my house. He came out the next day and properly told me how much time he needed to find all the components and the custom paint in order to comply with the home owners association regulations. The job was done in less time than estimated, his craftsmanship was impressive and he was very diligent. The final cost of the mailbox was reasonable and cost effective compared to the rest of contractors in the area. I rate this contractor 5 stars. I will l hire them for future work and recommend him to my neighbors.

I had a broken window and wasn't sure If I can fix it or will have to spend a lot more money to replace it. I saw Argo glas & windows that repair instead of replacing, I thought it might be a good idea to call them first. Esmira was very nice on the phone and set an appointment fairly soon. They came and said that most likely they have the part to fix the window. They didn't charge me for the visit and did estimate They followed up very quickly said that they can fix it and set another appointment. Guys came on the 2nd appointment, very nice and courteous, and fixed the window in no time. They sure deserved all the 5 stars they got, and earned one more from me. Thank you.

Tribuilt has done work for me on multiple occasions. They've done trouble shooting to figure out what was wrong with faulty electrical outlets, and at another time fixed an inside electrical wiring issue that was causing both porch lights not to work. I've know this company to always be proficient and professional. I would recommend Tribuilt for any of your home improvement or repair needs.

Lyndell did an outstanding job on our powder room. He came to our home to give us an estimate. He told what exactly needed to be done. He showed me the area needing repairs. Other companies expanded the area of repair in their estimates. He worked tirelessly on the project. The powder room looks like no work was ever done. Excellent. I highly recommend Lyndell's Home Remodel and Repair.

FENCE and ROOF My husband and I purchased a 1950's mid century modern ranch style house this winter. Although we knew the roof was in need of repair, the expense of moving and other repairs had us put a new roof on hold. Unfortunately the mild winter brought rain so we contacted Bo at Steamatic for an estimate. (Recommended by a friend) Additionally we needed a fence for our labrador, Maxie. Steamatic offered us a bundle discount for the roof and chain link fence. I'm pleased with the service and professional attitude of the crew members. Alex was really great and kept me informed everyday of the progress of the projects .I later learned they are a family based company which was nice because they cared about the overall experience. We were asked for just a down payment where many other companies wanted all monies upfront for supplies and labor. The remaining balance we split between a credit card and check which really helped us because our initial plan was to install the roof at a later date. I highly recommend Steamatic and ask for Alex to be your crew leader! P Olsen- West Bend

I am a novice when it comes to electrical work, so I was aware that I would need help. Ricky was unbelievable. He came in, did a job much bigger than he had to do, and was unbelievably kind. My wife and daughter think he's great, he was knowledgeable, and unlike most repair professionals I had encountered, he was extremely honest, and humble. I can't thank Ricky enough for his work on my bathroom fan and electrical outlets, and I look forward to hiring him again to help me with some other electrical issues that were here when my wife and I bought our house. He does top-notch quality work, is extremely hard working, and most importantly: trustworthy. Anyone looking for an electrician that doesn't hire Ricky would be foolish.

Al and his team do an exceptional job. They assisted me with several big jobs including: gutter replacement, drywall repair, two bathroom rehabs, excavating and adding a water shield to the exterior lower unit, and the installation of electronic heating boards. He was very responsive, transparent, and stuck to the timeline he gave me. I will definitely be partnering with him for future projects.

Trent and his crew did a wonderful job with our drywall job. He had a lot of masking that was needed and was careful with all the woodwork in the lower level was properly covered. His communication was excellent and we could count on him to be at the house when he said. We would not hesitate to have him do more work at the house in the future.

My husband & I had 5 different tilers come to take a look at our floor. Out of the five we bought it down to 2 and then when with Joe/Native Remodels - We have a older (1963) home with many obstacles- Radiant heat/pocket doors/side bathroom, plus we were having 3 rooms that flowed into each other done (650 sq.ft.) They said it would take 6 days - And it did - They did all the tear out and disposal. They worked on saving our existing molding. My tile is beautiful and straight. They were very easy to talk too. Made sure my cat did not get outside. Worked around me, since I work out of the home. Installed a kitchen light for me. Fixed a loose tile on our foyer entrance. The price was overly fair. Very pleased with the work & professional manner. Will be hiring them in the future to remodel our master bath. 1 project at a time. Brigette Begos

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
