Hired on Thumbtack

Hired on Thumbtack

I would definitely not recommend hiring this kid. He bids on trash hauling jobs but doesn't even have a vehicle of his own. He showed up late the first day with a borrowed SUV he planed to haul everything in the back of. He came back later with a borrowed pick up truck and did some more hauling. Since he showed up so late in the afternoon he did not have time to finish. He promised to be back later to finish the next weekend however supposedly his friend dropped him off at another job and never came back to pick him up. He never contacted us to explain until the weekend was over (he only works on the weekend because he is a kid and probably in school). He has now told me he never plans to finish hauling the wood from our yard. He says this is because we have changed the job and lied about some cardboard recycling in our garage being included when in reality the cardboard, and all the yard waste was literally photographed and labeled and recorded in Thumbtack so there is no disputing it was clearly described. If he looks back through the job description and conversation it literally couldn't be more thoroughly documented by photographs and description. Plus when he came to our home initially he was shown all the material to be hauled and agreed to complete the work for the stated price. I was skeptical since he was so young and brought a borrowed SUV to a hauling job but we decided to give him a chance. He was only $25 lower than the 2nd lowest bid we received from an adult with his own truck and a real business so obviously that was a mistake. It is true that when he showed up again with no truck and no ability to haul the cut wood in our back yard and told us he also did landscaping we then hired him in person to do some yard work assuming he would return the next weekend with a truck to finish hauling the wood from the initial job we had hired him for 3 weeks previous. However we decided to cancel the yard work shortly after he left to go "get drinks" for 3 hours and then returned to start on some weeding, however along with weeds he pulled all the new mulch off our beds and it was scattered all over the grass so it was obvious he had no idea what he was doing so we paid him for the hours he spent on the bed but canceled the rest of the yard work. I don't see why cancelling the yard work after seeing how poorly he was doing it has any bearing on the hauling job. If he had shown up with a truck like he was supposed to he wouldn't even have been doing it. He sounded very nice and sincere and apologetic about how long it was taking him to complete what was supposed to be a one day job so we have been really patient waiting a month for it to be finished but in response to my asking when he will finish he has now written me a rude message claiming we did not accurately describe the job and have cost him other jobs which makes no sense as he hasn't been here in weeks and never completed the work. Furthermore the whole wood/cardboard hauling job was photographed and recorded in thumbtack, he then saw the whole hauling job in person before beginning it and confirmed he was taking the job for the quoted price. If it took a lot longer than he expected or the price he quoted wasn't worth it its because he bid on a yard waste and cardboard hailing job AND HAS NO TRUCK so obviously it took longer than anyone expected. Don't waste your time with this kid its not worth the $25 or $50 you think you might save. I would also recommend making sure anyone you hire for a hauling job has access to a truck, I thought that would be obvious but evidently you can't make any assumption. Don't hire him for landscaping unless you want hime to make a mess of your yard after spending most of the day somewhere else.
