I typically try to bill not to exceed (NTE) one base fee instead of hourly but that is based on a clear road map (project plan) of what needs to be delivered when the project is complete. If the client cannot articulate the wants and needs clearly then the project goes into the hourly fee project plan. I also have an Excel spreadsheet that helps me to price/cost a project.
