Introduction: I began volunteering as a math tutor in high school where I received my training and am now starting my own business. I have 4 years of experience in working with students from grades 1 to 12, including adults seeking their GEDs. I believe in the social pedagogy. Rather than just explaining what to do, I like to help guide students in finding solutions to problems, either through accessing available resources, critical thinking strategies, asking questions, or getting to the root of the problem, etc. This approach helps us to feel prepared to tackle challenges when we are on our own. I also help with college prep and organization skills, if needed. High school was a very difficult time in my life, as it is for many. In addition to my bad health, my family's financial situation wasn't the best, so we couldn't afford a tutor to help me with homework or college prep. I see many students with an enormous amount of potential for academic success but stuck in the same situation as I found myself in high school. I am a college student myself, so my economic status is still important. However, seeing a child or a teenager smile because he/she understands his/her material is so much more important to me. I love helping students who enjoy learning. We all just need that little push and of course, guidance.
