The Initial Interview, the first session consists of helping the client feel comfortable. Many clients who have never participated in counseling feel extremely nervous and question whether or not she has made the right decision, is this the right counselor for me, will she really be able to help me, etc. Many clients who have participated in counseling have the same concerns. The first part of the first session involves helping the client feel comfortable. Next, I inform the client about what counseling involves, confidentiality, my policies and guidelines regarding payments, cancellations, and more. The last part of the first session, the initial interview, consists of the client completing a questionnaire that contains many questions about personal, medical, family history. Additionally, this part of the session consists of the client discussing what he wants to address in therapy.
