FAQs
- What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
I work on fixed-price commission only, based on each project, competitively priced. This is do for two reasons: number one, I want to tailor the project to each individual, and the depth of editing will always vary; and two, I want pricing to be according to results, not by hour. The price you pay isn't tied to my efficiency, but the quality of my work instead.
- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
I prefer to speak over the phone and find out the full scope of their requests in detail for their editing request, including the type of audience they are addressing, any style and format needed, the depth to which they wish me to edit (proofread, copy or content edit), as well as the background on the writer. I wish to know where they are coming from, and what their vision is for their particular piece. Then I go to work, editing thoroughly and consistently, and returning the work to the client when I say I will. If further work is needed, and consultation with back and forth for content editing, I happily consult on the phone or internet to further hone the writing piece to where it needs to be. I prefer to use Microsoft Word to edit, using the 'track changes' feature, or google docs, so that I can return the piece to the client with viewed edits and comments. Then the reader can accept or reject changes one by one. If they prefer to have it delivered in finished format, I can skip submitting the changes to the client and do edits completely. I can submit via google docs, or just by email. I can do this in PDF form, or doc form, whichever is best suited, as well as PowerPoint. If the item to be edited is a website, I send an document attached to email with requested edits to the client. These can be further explained if needed, by phone or email. If the website is hosted by Squarespace, I can personally log in and do edits in real-time on the website for the client. The biggest goal of mine is to understand the writer and their goals for their piece as much as possible, so that my editing is in line with them.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
While I have no more formal training other than fantastic English courses in college, I have had real-life editing experience for 15 years freelance editing different types of works, ranging in size from novels to small 250-word scholarship essays. I also have edited a range of writing styles, from academic papers and essays, to websites, blogs, and speeches. All of it is interesting to me, and thrilling to learn and grow with each project.
