FAQs
- What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
This is a difficult question to answer for construction, as no two jobs are the same. With something like a home remodel or other major project, where you cannot see behind the walls until you've already started demo, things seem to always come up that influence the final price in the end. Hardwood/laminate flooring, however, is usually straightforward pricing. My rate ranges from $2.50-$3.50 a sq ft if the subfloor is solid, level, flat.
- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
First and foremost is answering any questions they may have about the work I have done, as well as the kind of person I am. Personally when I hire someone their character is just as important as their experience level! You can be the best [insert profession] in the world, but if I'm not comfortable leaving you alone in my home for 5 minutes that is absolutely a deal breaker. Once they feel comfortable with me, we then discuss the job at hand and exactly what they expect of me. If for whatever reason I feel I am not the right fit for their job, which is rare, I due them the courtesy of being honest and letting them know.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I went to college for business management, and have still stuck with the hands-on nature of carpentry as it suits my personality the best. I have worked directly with many incredible professionals + masters, having picked up techniques from each along the way. The great thing about this business is that you can learn something from different people that do the same thing, since people excel in different areas. Much like cooking, carpentry has a way of bringing out your strengths! Next month (Feb 2016) I will be going to Grand Junction, CO for an intensive contractor course for application of epoxy resins to coat countertops, shower walls, and floors. In the longer term (1-2 years from now) I want to attend the Fine Woodworking program at Red Rocks Community College. It is literally one of the best comprehensive programs of that nature in the country, and I am funding it through the use of Thumbtack in addition to my regular jobs!
