Introduction: I work with students from grade 4 through college who are struggling with social studies, math, English, French, and test prep (SAT, ACT, GRE, GMAT, LSAT). My focus is on building competence by developing students' confidence in their abilities. By listening carefully I am able to see what students are not getting or what stresses them, and I target lessons to the areas of difficulty with sensitivity and compassion. I have a Master of Philosophy degree from Oxford in the U.K. and a PhD in English from Princeton. My thesis, Enchanted Shows: Vision and Structure in Elizabethan and Shakespearean Comedies about Magic, is being republished by Routledge. I have taught both college English (10 years) and high school math (5 years) and have run a private tutoring practice for 12 years. I enjoy boosting morale of the struggling student. Students learn better when they hear affirming messages about their work, and positive reinforcement of their strengths. This often means starting from inside the student’s comfort zone, and working outwards to expand it.

Elissa was an SAT tutor for our daughter, and later helped her with a big IB English extended essay project. She was an outstanding instructor! We would very highly recommend her to any student wanting to achieve their best on the SATs and beyond!

Elissa Hare is an excellent tutor. She made my daughter feel welcome, at ease, and capable of accomplishing any task. We visited Elissa primarily for help with math homework and tests; she was always prepared for whatever assignment my daughter was given. If they ran out of math work to do, Elissa would not waste a moment of time. She would have my daughter digging through her backpack for other homework she could help with. Before going to Elissa, we had considered Sylvan or Kumon. Elissa, however, was able to provide more expertise, as well as a one-on-one environment that was far more suited to our needs.

Elissa is excellent with my 14-year-old granddaughter who had become discouraged with her online high school French class. Elissa is encouraging, tells interesting stories, is very attentive, is firm and helps move along with the lessons. I see the excitement in my granddaughter, she looks forward to going to the tutoring sessions.

I'm a high school senior and Eliisa helped me study for the ACT. She was very kind, understanding, approachable. She was very patient and gave good explanations when I didn't understand something. She targeted the areas I needed help with and provided me with strategies for test taking- along with tactics for me to help remember them during the test. She made the sessions fun- and she texted reminders for every session. She helped me feel prepared for the test.

The usual rate is $50 an hour with some wiggle room!
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
I work with each customer to determine what particular needs that customer has, and then I tailor the lessons precisely and intensely to those needs, always with the understanding that the customer can change focus when desired!
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a B.A. in English from the University of Toronto, a Master of Philosophy from the University of Oxford in the UK, a PhD from Princeton, and a law degree from Lewis and Clark in Portland. I also trained to be a tax preparer with H& R Block and passed the state bar exam and state tax preparer exam.
