Introduction: I have tutored mathematics in a wide variety of settings, with both star students seeking a challenge and students struggling to merely pass, and at all sorts of levels from Algebra I to Differential Equations. I have worked as an Adjunct Professor at a community college, part of a tutoring company, and on my own, tutoring one-on-one. This makes it possible for me to help all sorts of students. I'm very flexible, and can readily adapt my approach to meet any student's particular needs and goals. I love mathematics, but when I tell most people that I majored in it, they react by saying, "Oh, I hated math!" My goal as a tutor is to make math comprehensible and interesting for my students. Most people who hate math gave up on it at some point, most likely because they had a poor teacher. There is no magic to being a good mathematician. It takes a good mentor and hard work, but, truly, it's something any student can conquer and come to enjoy! My mission is to do that for all my students, and what I enjoy most is watching a student go from someone who is scared and frustrated by mathematics to someone who genuinely "gets it." The transformation takes time and hard work, but it happens every time, and is wonderful to see.

When I returned to school after a multi-decade absence, I needed all the help I could get. Susanna Heinz was instrumental in getting me up to speed with various topics in the Calculus curriculum. I am grateful for her help and encouragement during that time. If she had not moved to the west coast, I would still be relying on her assistance to this day with some of the more advanced Calculus concepts. She has an amazing command of all topics related to mathematics. I wish I were half as knowledgeable as she is. If you need assistance in better understanding math, you would be well served by getting Susanna's help.

My grades drastically improved as a result of studying with Susanna. I would give her more than 5 stars if I could, she's an amazing tutor. Susanna expertly tutored me in math starting with middle school algebra and continuing all the way through college calculus. She was a valuable partner for the majority of my math education. She is especially skilled at helping you master mathematical concepts by distilling complex ideas into easy to understand examples.

Susanna has tutored my son starting for his SAT prep initially, subject Math and AP Calculus later. Her coaching is very effective and have the scope well covered, I'm also impressed with how she follows up the progress and encourge my son alone the way. We are all very happy with the outcome !

FAQs

  • What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

I typically charge $100 an hour.

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I graduated with a B.A. in mathematics from Columbia University in NYC, magna cum laude. I started tutoring my fellow students in high school, tutored high school students throughout my time at Columbia, and worked at a community college after graduating, first in the help room and then as an Adjunct Professor. When my family moved to California, I began working at C2 Education in Palo Alto, where I stayed for about two years until I decided to start some courses that would lead up to graduate school. I am also working as a T.A. this semester in a Multivariable Calculus class, but have weekends on which I can tutor privately.

  • What types of customers have you worked with?

As stated in my introduction, I have worked with a very wide range of ages and confidence levels. (I prefer to say that and not abilities, as I believe that anyone can learn math provided they have the right guidance and some self-confidence that they can succeed. It is these latter two elements that struggling students are usually lacking, not on talent.) I have worked extensively with high schoolers, both ones who are just trying to pass and those who want to get ahead, or get help with a particularly challenging course, and I have worked with college students, both formally (at community colleges) and informally (at Columbia, when I often helped fellow students with calculus).
