A very unprofessional and unlicensed contractor I regret hiring. Unfortunately I can only give Stephen Ongley 1 star, one responding to my floor job and one for at least finishing it. First day he was 2-1/2 hours late and second day he was 2 hours late. I was on a tight time schedule to get my brothers room done prior to my brother starting cancer treatments and timing was critical. The floor was installed but I had to remind him of his scope or work was not complete. The threshold that he tried not do was the cheapest piece of pine glued down, so crappy that I told him not to do the other one. Next he tried to charge me more than his bid price and got excessive dirt smudge marks all over the freshly painted walls and baseboards that I had to get repainted. Finally he gave me an additional charge of $77 for the materials like nails, drill bits and energy drink and got very abusive if I wasn’t going to pay him for something that should be part of his bid. I agreed to pay him so that he would just leave the property. Normally I would let things like this go by, not this guy because this will occur to other people who hire him.
Stephen Ongley's reply
First, I have never been "abusive" towards a client, nor have I ever been accused of it in 20+ years of carpentry. I'm honestly shocked and sickened by this allegation. I only have positive reviews except for this one, and I see it as a personal attack by an individual who is trying to ruin my reputation and my business over a minor billing issue, which is shameful and juvenile. His statement is libelous and will be addressed as such as a separate legal matter. Having said that, Mike and his brother stated throughout the project how happy they were with my work and their new wood floor - apparently up until after Mike paid the final bill, without complaint - and then left this review. The original quote I gave Mike was contingent upon measurements that did not take into account the shrinkage and swelling gap-all which I explained to Mike before I began the job. It also didn't take into account the pieces of quarter round so that the flooring could butt up against the baseboard, as requested by the client-all of which added to the original quote/cost of the project-which was also explained to Mike, and was acceptable to him at the time he hired me to do the job. Mike requested that the work be finished before his brother began chemo treatments. I gave him a time frame of 24 hours for me to complete the floor. I completed the project in 9 hours total. My arrival times were not set as I had a "quoting" appointments scheduled both days; however, I had given Mike a time window of a half-hour of my arrival times, and stopped at Home Depot for additional supplies (quarter round, etc.) totaling $77 for the project on Day 2-yet again, I finished the job way within the budgeted time I had given Mike-9 hours total; 3 days before his brother was scheduled to begin his treatment. I take great pride in both my work and my reputation. Any mess I make, I clean up before I leave a job. I stand by the quality of my work as evidenced by the 5 new photos of this hardwood flooring job I have now posted taken that day, which also show clean walls and baseboards that don't need repainting. Overall, if a client is dissatisfied, I offer to stay or return until my client is satisfied. This client was offered the same guarantee.
