FAQs
- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
Typically, I meet with the client --- preferably by phone or in person, occasionally by email --- about the overall message of the video. We discuss the goal of video, the key points and the target audience. We agree on a plan for production and often create a preliminary schedule for the shoot and the edit. 1) Once I have a clear idea of what the client wants, I write a proposal that spells out the proposed running length of the video and what the project will require. This document includes what the client will provide, what I will provide, a budget, a production schedule and deadline. When this agreement is signed by the client and I receive half of the total payment, we begin the pre-production and production planning. 2) If necessary, I visit the location before the day of the shoot so I can identify shooting angles, audio requirements, and lighting placement. Sometime I will consult with client on script changes. 3) Production begins! Once the client and I agree on and have finalized the script/outline, it guides what we're going to shoot and in what order and how the footage is going to be edited. Sometimes a visual storyboard for each scene is needed. 4) On the day(s) of the shoot, I will arrive at the location a minimum of 30 minutes early, depending on the needs of the situation, to unload gear, set up any lights, audio, as well as any additional equipment needed for the shoot. When we wrap up the shoot I will need ample time, typically about 30 minutes, to “strike” (break down) the set and load out the gear. 5) If professional voice talent is in the budget, I will often record a “scratch track” to guide the first cut (rough cut). Once the rough cut is good , then I call in the pro to do the voice --- this reduces retakes and unexpected costs. Any music or additional elements, such as logos and graphics, will preferably have been collected before the edit as well so that the edit and production can continue seamlessly. 6) Editing begins. If there are any unexpected changes that affect the budget, they will be OK’d by the client in writing. After the initial edit is complete, a private viewing link will be emailed to the client for review. If any revisions are requested by the client, the edited will be revised to reflect the changes and another private viewing link will be emailed to the client for review. As made clear in the project agreement, additional rounds of revisions will be an additional fee. 7) Once the project is complete the finished product will be delivered to the client on the agreed upon format (Digital download, DVD, etc). I submit the invoice for the remaining 50% of the project fee. I also want all of my clients to get great value from our work together. I contact the client after the video is being used, to see that they are completely satisfied.
