FAQs
- What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
Pricing depends on two things: distance I need to travel and level of tutoring (elementary, middle school, high school, college). My online tutoring rates are typically about two thirds of my in person rates.
- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
The first step varies a lot depending on the age and personality of the student. A younger student may be more nervous about tutoring, in which case a beginning session involves getting to know them personally, making them feel comfortable, and helping them set some personal goals related to the subject being tutored. For an older student who is looking forward to having help with a particular subject, I focus much more on information gathering. What course are you studying for? How are you doing right now? What are some topics you feel comfortable with already? What are some topics that are confusing you? These questions, coupled with subject specific questions to assess comfort level and gaps, are key to helping me understand the scope of what needs to be covered.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I majored in Biology and minored in Chemistry at MIT. As a student I did a lot of tutoring and also took some teacher education courses. Since graduating in 2011, I have been a full time teacher and tutor. I have tutored and taught at a variety of different levels from fifth grade all the way to genetics and biochemistry at MIT.
