FAQs
- What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
My pricing can be flexible to meet your needs. I'll charge $15-20 an hour for most editing jobs, with a minimum time input of one hour. For longer pieces, we can negotiate a per-page rate if preferred. If you find that cost burdensome we can work together to find a suitable arrangement.
- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
First, I seek to get to know the writer I'll be working with. What are their passions? What drives them? Where do they come from? I believe that all writing is an expression of a person's inner voice, and that it is critical to connect with the writer as much as possible. Second, I'll gather more information about the project at hand: What are they seeking to communicate, to who, and how? What kinds of improvements do they want to see in their writing? If we are working on one project we'll dive right in! I'll request a current draft, as well as any 'assigning' documents: the writing prompt, if you will. I'll review the piece, and will return individual edits within an hour for documents under 10 pages. We can then go back and forth as long as you like, until you feel great about the finished product. If we're hoping to work together for longer-term coaching and tutoring, in our first meeting we will set goals together and set benchmarks for progress. I will likely ask to see examples of current writing.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I am grateful to have grown up in academic environments - both high school and college - which deeply centered writing. Written work was a key part of my politics-Environmental Studies degree at Whitman College, and I spent ample time collaborating with and supporting my peers throughout that program. While at Whitman, I spent three semesters working for our campus newspaper editing the opinion section. In this role I managed, guided, and motivated a staff of six to eight writers to produce a weekly opinion section. Each week I edited writers work for ideas, clarity, and syntax, while ensuring deadlines were met. Since then I have been a go-to resource for my peers and social-networks for editing help in job applications, personal essays, and work-related writing.
