About
I teach real world contemporary guitar, giving my students the tools to be able to jam or perform with other players in all styles. Whether you're a beginner or a working pro, lessons with me will get you to your next goal: if it's to be able to write your own music, to be able to jam a 12 bar blues with confidence, be able to improvise over jazz changes, or even to shred with the most up to date metal techniques. Using a unique and concise approach, I take complex theory concepts and make them easy to understand and attainable.
I teach in-person lessons Monday through Friday out of my beautiful home studio located in the Discovery Heights subdivision of Anchorage, Alaska. I AM FULLY VACCINATED AGAINST COVID 19 AND FOLLOW ALL CDC SAFETY GUIDELINES. You can read many Yelp reviews about my teaching in Washington DC, Falls Church, and Herndon, Virginia. The DC metro area was my prior home before relocating to Anchorage.
Teaching is my passion and I am very fortunate to make my living doing what I love to do most in the world. What I provide in a private lesson that is fundamentally superior to class based lessons is simple... one on one interaction. As a teacher working with only one student, the student gets all of the teacher's attention. This means I can assess the student's ability to absorb the information and pace the lessons so that the student is comfortable with the material and their progress. We set reasonable
goals based on the individual and we attain them.
I work very well with children and will accept students as young as 4 on a case by case basis after dialogue with the parent in charge of the child’s lesson. This is important: a parent will need to be present for the first few lessons because the parent will be very involved with making sure the lessons are practiced correctly. I will go over this information with the parent and it’s very easy to learn.

Kevin is clearly an extremely experienced (and accomplished) musician in general and guitar teacher in particular. I have found him to be extremely professional, yet personable enough to make the lessons seem part of the bigger picture and make you WANT to practice (yes, even the boring stuff...it will pay off in the end!). He manages to pack in quite a bit of instruction in 30-minute sessions and is willing to go the extra mile toward helping you in the direction in which you want to head. I find the classes and practice challenging yet likely right where I need to be given my experience and ability. I would highly recommend Kevin, even for more experienced students interested in refining their skills and/or expanding their knowledge of music theory.

Great Teacher!! My child has had two lessons with Kevin absolutely loved it and can’t wait until next week’s lesson. My daughter is only 7 and was nervous about starting Guitarlessons, but Kevin was good at making her feel at ease. She even learned to play a song in her first lesson. Kevin took the time to prepare me as the parent to be able to help my daughter with her “at home” practice schedule, Kevin explains things so well it was very easy to assist my daughter after her first lesson. After her second lesson she didn’t much help at all. I highly recommend Kevin Henrickson as a Guitar Teacher.

My daughter recently started guitarlessons with Kevin. At first she was a bit reserved when it came to lessons but Kevin provides age-appropriate instruction without the pressure for a young child. She really enjoys her lessons and picking up her guitar at home. We are both looking forward to more lessons with Kevin! I will also add that Kevin and Foxes Music (where the lessons are held for her) were very accommodating with our work/school schedule and worked with us until we found the perfect day/time slot!

My lessons with another local teacher turned into a slog and I found myself not wanting to play so I went looking for a new teacher. I’ve only had one lesson with Kevin, but I came home more energized to play than I have in the last year and a half. I learned a couple fixes to my form in the first lesson and left with a fun song to practice. So happy to get off of Zoom and be in the room with a vaccinated teacher and can’t wait for the next lesson!

In just two lessons with Kevin I’ve learned more, and had more fun, than during the entire 4 years of guitarlessons I took in my teens. Kevin’s enthusiasm as teacher and a musician is contagious, and I’m really looking forward to learning from him.

FAQs
What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
I charge $70 per 1/2 hour for in person lessons, with four lessons being paid in advance. This may seem expensive, but I have extensive stage and teaching experience and you get what you pay for. My style of teaching is relaxed, comfortable, informative and my love of teaching and playing is infectious. Beginners to Shredding pros will walk away from their first lesson playing something cool and useful that they never knew before.
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
Each student is different. No two people are the same and no two people learn the same. So a good teacher must be very flexible to the learning styles of each individual and adapt a process of imparting the information to fit the student.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I attended GIT (Guitar Institute of Technology) at the Musicians Institute in Hollywood, the University of California Van Nuys, and the University of Alaska Fairbanks in my home state. I was a touring pro hired gun for 30 years while simultaneously keeping a full student load. Besides the 10’s of thousands of hours on guitar I have indidually accrued, I have over 34,000 hours (that is NOT a typo) of professionally compensated stage time. This makes me a great resource for those students who may have dreams of taking their playing to the next level, or even towards one day being a working pro.
