I worked construction work to help pay for my Civil Engineering degree from Auburn University. After graduation, I have worked as a consulting engineer, a contractor, and a civil servant for over 51 years. my 56 years total construction experience has taught me that a good contractor will carefully follow the instructions of the architect or engineer, while a great contractor will offer suggestions based on his or her years of experience, and then do exactly what the architect or engineer says to do. A great architect or engineer will consider the contractors’ suggestions, apply applicable code and sound engineering principles, and guide the contactor accordingly. Dycus Construction is a great contractor. His years of experience in all phases of home construction proved valuable on this project.

We had a few of projects that needed to be done - screening in a patio, adding cabinets to our laundry room, and repairing a wall. We contacted The Tennessean Renovations and Tony came out promptly and reviewed everything with us. He was very patient and attentive to our needs. From the time Tony came out to job completion was 10 days which was absolutely amazing given our past experience with other contractors. Tony, Lupe, and his crew were professional, communicative, friendly, and hardworking. All of these are qualities that you look for in a contractor and The Tennessean Renovations has them in spades! We already have our next project lined up with them!

I hired Michael to completely remodel my bathroom. I wasn't sure of how I wanted to do it, so he met me at Home Depot & helped me with suggestions. Him & his crew were very professional & very pleasant to work with. I think that it may have turned out to be a little more work than he anticipated, but it looks great! I'm happy with it! I will contact him again whenever I get ready to remodel my kitchen!

We had a new construction home and James Lewis was an authorized dealer/installer of Onyx products for our 2.5 bathrooms. He installed a custom walk in shower and a double vanity top in our master bathroom. He installed Onyx vanity tops in the other two bathrooms. The fit and finish work in the walk in shower met all our expectations. His attention to detail was exceptional. James Lewis was courteous and willing to work with our ideas. We were pleased with his workmanship and skill. We gladly recommend James Lewis if you want to hire a professional you can trust.

Daniel and his crew did an excellent job on replacing my roof. They were able to remove many layers of shingles and decking in a fast and professional manor. Service after the sale was also good. When I noticed a small problem days later, his crew came out immediately and fixed it. Competitive prices too.

My husband & I decided to do an extensive remodel. Mike was very prompt in coming to see what we had in mind, giving some suggestions & then submitting an estimate. Contract was drawn up, very professional. Great communication between us. He truly listened but also was expert enough in his fields to explain if there would be a problem down the road. Mike completely gutted kitchen, two bathrooms, removed a load bearing wall, reconfigure den, dining room, closets & the laundry room. Mike's scope: design, drywall, painting, installing lights, cabinets, laying tile, hardwoods, electrical, plumbing, etc. We were so pleased with the results- Amazing!! We had seen past Projects that Mike & his crew had completed & were very impressed. And when others have asked who did this wonderful transformation to our home, we have never hesitated to give them Mike Clark' s name & information. Pictures do not do the remodel true justice, because you have to live in these wonderful changes day after day to really appreciate Mike's handiwork! Ben & Sharon Johnson

Matt performed finishing paint work, as well as some trim, caulking, & sheetrock work, on our new home. Due to the good work there, I asked him to paint the exterior trim & basketball goal, as well as stain the front door, at our old home. All the work was very good and very reasonably priced. Matt was personable to work with, and he strived to meet our expectations. I would recommend him.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

When should you hire a contractor?

A few home remodeling projects can be done by an ambitious DIY-minded homeowner or local handyman, but many are best completed by a professional home renovation contractor. You should hire a contractor when you’re planning a large project that takes time, machinery or large tools, and several workers; a kitchen remodel, new bathroom or home addition will be most successful with a licensed, expert contractor at the helm. It’s particularly important to have a professional contractor on board for construction, electrical, plumbing and HVAC projects that require inspections to meet local building codes. Of course, you can hire a contractor for smaller projects, too, if you prefer to let an expert handle things like addition or removal of a wall, small framing projects, or anything that requires a permit.

You should hire a contractor when you’re ready to start a remodeling project and you have plans, a budget and a timeline for the work in hand, but before any remodeling work begins.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
