Before our son began guitar lessons with Jeff, he got very good, competent lessons from other private instructors as well as those affiliated with the very impressive ASU music department. But Jeff’s individualized approach has been decidedly different. Recognizing that our 10 year old has areas of music that motivate him to stay excited and engaged, he always keeps the fun parts as the backbone of the learning process. This past weekend, he eagerly and proudly showed me the importance of knowing a variety of scales (major, minor, mixolydian, pentatonic, blues, etc.) and how he can use them to create music of his own. Talk about impressive! We can’t recommend Jeff more highly!

Ms. Coleman has taught my daughter art for many years with fantastic results! They get along so well my daughter even wanted to try some guitar and general music lessons with Ms. Coleman. She is knowledgeable, reliable and great with her students. I would recommend her without hesitation.

Reggie's the best. He was patient yet able to positively push for improvement. I liked that we worked on music that was interesting to me while also integrating enough music theory to enable a better understanding and appreciation of how music works. My husband also followed his lesson after mine and often we were able to work on music or a song together. This made practicing at home very enjoyable. Thanks Reggie for your flexibility and expertise.

Maryanne is a truly gifted teacher. I came to her an absolute beginner six months ago and now I can read music and play several songs. She has found the sweet spot between providing guidance and structure and allowing you, the student, to choose what to work on. She can listen to any song you bring in and immediately learn the chords and rhythm, write it out and break it down for you until you can do it. It's her super power: she helps you step by step over the gap from the moment of inspiration -- I want to play THAT! -- but not knowing where to begin: she shows you where to begin and takes you all the way through, all while managing the fragile self confidence of a novice musician with patience and steadiness. I am very grateful to Maryanne.

I found Dawn through thumbtack while looking for a tatoo artist for our daughter's bat mitzvah. She ended up providing the tatoo artists, making chocolate party favors for the event, setting up a beautiful candy buffet for the kids and also being a general sounding board for many questions during the planning process. She stayed and monitored the event, was there whenever I needed her and all at a reasonable price. She was always very professional and prompt. Her goal was to make it as easy as possible for me and my family. I was surprised to find out how many things she could have supplied for the event. I would definitely recommend Dawn to my friends and family.

Yorman Williams and his band Yormelodies is a group of professional musicians who really knows how to get the party started. Instantly capturing the audience's attention with their wide range of music from the 60s, 70, 80s, and 90s, no one was able to remain in their seats as they performed. At one point, Yorman himself gave a superb rendition of Louis Armstrong's :"What a wonderful world", and if we were'nt all looking directly at him, we would never believe it was not Louis himself. I highly recommend this great performer for weddings, parties, reunions, and celebrations!

Miss Palmer has an extraordinary voice from heaven that leaves a person wanting to hear more. She has sung the National Anthem during American Legion events and during military retirement ceremonies. She also sang during the 4th of July celebration for the city of Avondale. She is so talented that she sang during a wedding ceremony where attendees requested a copy of the video of what she had sung. She is a truly gifted artist that can sing in multiple languages and learned to do so as a student of the Phoenix Girls Chorus. She is a gifted teacher who teaches youth how to sing and how to read music. She teaches youth dance, art and drama. Numerous youth have been inspired by her talents. I give Miss Palmer a 5-star recommendation.

Corey is the bass player in my band and we primarily play blues, classic rock and jazz. Not only does Corey show professionalism in his playing style, but he is also very punctual and responsive to feedback. Given that he has 10+ of years with the bass, I would highly recommend Corey for bass lessons!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How much does a mariachi band cost?

A mariachi band will bring your party or event alive with their fabulous costumes, beautiful playing and strong vocals. The cost of a mariachi band for hire will depend on how many players are in the group. Each musician in a performance group needs to be paid, so pricing is usually based on the number of mariachis (musicians), the location of the event (and travel time required), and the length of the performance. Day of the week also affects cost, as does day — Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other major holidays will cost more than regular days. The national average cost for live bands of all types ranges between $740 and $1,200. Depending on where you live and regional rates for performers, you might expect to pay between $65 and $120 per hour, per player. Mariachi groups may have 12-15 players available for performance at one time, depending on your budget. Here are some examples of how the number of players affects average cost:

      • Four mariachis: $300 per hour for weeknights, $400 per hour for weekends.
      • Five mariachis: $350 per hour for weeknights, $400-$450 per hour for weekends. Weekends may have a minimum number of hours.
      • Six mariachis: $400 per hour for weeknights, $450-$500 per hour for weekends.

How many mariachis can a band have?

A mariachi band for hire can have as many players as you like. Modern mariachi bands typically have a minimum of four players with the trumpet playing a vital musical role along with stringed instruments such as the violin, guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar with a deep body), vihuela (a Spanish stringed guitar) and guitar. Strong vocals are also an important component of mariachi bands for hire, since one or more of the players will be singing during the performance. For a truly spectacular show, you can hire a mariachi band with 15 or more players. The medley of stringed instruments, multiple trumpets, soaring vocals, and even an accordion or harp is powerful and beautiful. Mariachis typically wear the traditional costume of charros — Mexican horsemen. The look is a very regal, monotone suit, often in black or white, with silver adornments and embroidery. Mariachi bands often wear sombreros as well. Traditional mariachi bands were only made up of two or more players, according to a UNESCO report celebrating the cultural heritage of the musical style. The style of music originated in the state of Jalisco. Now the style of music is symbolic of Mexico but is celebrated all over the world, and adds a fabulous vibrancy to any group’s events, parties and weddings.
