Jon was extremely responsive, reliable, and easy to work with on this repair. He provided us the exact service we requested and could afford at the time and did not try to sell us a new system like has happened with other HVAC contractors in the past. We have already had him back for another HVAC repair on another property and from all indications he will be our go to person for HVAC P.M. and repair going forward.

We had used another service on another home owned by the same owner before we had found All Steam. All Steam did a better job for a better price. They also did the job with limited Air conditioning (wall unit in one room) as the main unit was broken; it was supposed to be fixed that morning, but the HVAC company didn't call me while they were there. We were on a tight schedule to get the tenants moved in so they saved the day.

Contractor did a great job. He was on time, curtious, and thurough. He was dressed professionally and had everything he needed to get the job done. The only thing I didn't agree with was the price. I needed a new capacitor which only cost no more than $20 and really is just plug and play. $198 isn't bad but for a low price part and ease of installation the price is pretty high. Overall job was completed quickly and ac unit works fine so I'm ok with it.

Courteous, knowledgeable and professional! Can't ask for much more. We haven't had any work done (yet) as we are still trying to get other contractors lined up for a big project. But Arizona AC Man came to our house provide a quote and even followed up to see if we had questions. Thank you!!!

Chris arrived at the scheduled time and even gave a call ahead of time that he was on his way. He was very friendly and courteous. After describing that I needed the common ground wires connected to both my air handlers he quickly got to work and accomplished the task. He went above and beyond my request by installing the new thermostat with out me asking. He was through to make sure that it was hooked up correctly and that both heating and air conditioning was still working properly. He also offered to come back if anything wasn't working as it should. I would highly recommend Grand Air for HVAC work. Thanks Chris for a job well done.

Patrick was very flexible with our scheduling when the contractors failed to meet deadlines 3 times. Patrick went above and beyond by moving another client and scheduling us in last minute so that we could meet our cleaning schedule. When David came he was knowledgeable and very helpful explaining the process and what to expect. He made sure we knew how to get the best performance out of the sanitizing and even went further than we expected cleaning the outside of the unit as well as the inside. They did a great job, we would use them again and recommend them highly.

My experience with 2 Brothers was amazing. Mike was punctual, polite, thoughtful, professional, knowledgeable, helpful and affordable. He was careful about putting shoe covers on and off going in and out of the house. He accurately diagnosed the design flaws and what the previous owners had done to get around it, which was putting more stress on the AC units. He opened all the registers at no extra charge. Would definitely use them for all my HVAC needs.

Competitive pricing with a great highly rated product. I have had many installation of HVAC units in a number of personal homes and rental properties. It is easy to obtain quotes and to get one company to beat one another's price. However Tyler and Simple Home Comfort is a keeper. First the product they recommended "Day & Night" - is rated 2nd to none, backed by a 10 year replacement warranty (not prorated), this unit is quiet, variable speed, offering such a very quiet operation you don't know if the unit is really on. 2nd Simple Home showed up on time (early) and finished the new install and corrective action to an existing 2nd unit the same day. (No return visit needed) Tyler quoted our project along with 5 or 6 other HVAC contractors. Tyler however was the only one that took the time to not only quote our project but review our project to make sure the unit would function properly in our home. This required the addition of 4 returns to all bedrooms, returns were cut in with no damage to ceilings, old returns were properly upgraded. Tyler also took the time to notice and correct the issues of a prior sloppy HVAC installation to our 2nd HVAC unit serving our home. Tyler recommendations for corrective action on the existing unit worked great. We will be using Tyler and Simple Home Comfort in the future.

I took a 3 year service contract with Patriot. Very dependable, provides a high level of QUALITY service, explains all the work that needs to be repaired and tuned up, Provided me with before and after photos and just very nice to do business with...He responded immediately.. My previous air conditioner service man of 25 years retired, so I wanted another reliable service to replace it and Patriot Air has provided that service for me. Highly Recommend him. He has an excellent rating with the Arizona Registrar of Contractors.

We purchased a condo and needed to have the AC assessed. We called several AC contractors to get comparative results and ideas. Eric Johnson arrived when he said he would. He reviewed our system and gave us an accurate account of what we needed and what we did not need. Eric knew his product and his competitors products and was able to answer courteously all of our questions which helped us to make a more informed decision. We contracted with Eric because he was genuine and knew his product. It has been over a year since he's installed a condensing unit, everything is working great. We are very happy with the work that was done, the schedule was maintained and the AC unit is working as intended. We highly recommend Eric Johnson and New Comfort Air & Home Services.

Out of 5 contractors I chose this one because the contractor was: a) most complete review of existing system b) offered most choices and price points c) very responsive (unusually) d) very professional e) best total value for lifetime of system Most contractors in AZ seems to look at HVAC as a commodity... expectations seem to be that a low price will get the job. Compared to Chicago, these contractor are not professional do not do a thorough job and don't follow up. Link Mechanical is heads above other contractors.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. How often should you get your air ducts cleaned?

How often you should clean your air ducts depends on your situation. If you or someone in the home has asthma or is acutely allergic to certain airborne materials or pollen, regular duct cleaning may be helpful. The Environmental Protection Agency doesn’t have an official position on the necessity of air duct cleaning unless the ducts have been contaminated by rodents, insects or mold, or you are aware of particles blowing out through the vents. The EPA recommends you have your air ducts cleaned on an as-needed basis. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) suggests having air ducts cleaned every three to five years.

Be cautious with companies that offer “whole house air duct cleaning,” urges the NADCA. The company may be using unscrupulous tactics to upsell you once they get started. Before any work begins, always clarify in writing what the job entails and what the cost will be. To protect yourself against fraud, read customer reviews and verify that your HVAC cleaning service has applicable licenses and certifications.

What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

Do you need to clean your air ducts?

Air duct cleaning is done by heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) professionals. The pros use industrial-strength, truck-mounted vacuums and powerful brushes and hoses to clean inside the metal ducts that make up your forced air heating and cooling system. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends duct cleaning if there is “substantial visible mold growth inside hard surface ducts, ducts that are infested with vermin such as rodents or insects, or ducts that are clogged with excessive amounts of dust and debris and/or particles are actually released into the home from your supply registers.”

You should also have air ducts cleaned after recent water contamination or water damage to prevent mold; after renovations or remodeling to ensure debris and dust didn’t settle in the vents and ducts; if you are having problems with allergies or asthma; or when you are moving into a newly purchased home, especially if the previous owners smoked or had pets. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) recommends getting your air ducts cleaned every three to five years, or every two to three years in regions where homeowners use their air conditioning and heater for many months of the year, while the EPA suggests homeowners have duct cleaning done as needed.

How many years does HVAC last?

The number of years an HVAC system lasts depend on the type and brand of components that make up your system. The lifespan of an air conditioner averages between 15 and 20 years. The life expectancy of a tankless water heater is approximately 20 years, while a storage water heater is closer to 10-15 years. Ducts may need replacing within 10-15 years. Your equipment will have a longer life if you have regular tuneups and maintenance to keep everything in good working order. If you’re having repair problems and your HVAC system is over 10 years old, it’s a good time to consider the costs and benefits of repairing vs. replacing. Energystar.gov provides the following tips to help you decide whether to repair or replace:

  • Your HVAC system needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are increasing.
  • Your cooling or heating equipment is less efficient.
  • Rooms in your home are too hot or too cold.
  • Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.
    • Replacing your system with an Energy Star-certified unit could save up to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills.
  • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.
    • You may choose to replace your system with an Energy Star-certified furnace (which is 15 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace) or an Energy Star-certified boiler (which is 5 percent more efficient).
  • Your home has humidity problems.
  • Your home has excessive dust.
    • Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.
  • Your heating or cooling system is noisy.
    • You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.
  • Your score on the Home Energy Yardstick is below five.
    • That means your home energy use is above average and you're probably paying too much for your utilities.
