Don’t get tricked into hiring bad: Get plans in hand prior to getting pricing. Without a set of plans and design, contractors cannot provide you with apples to apples scope of work estimates that you can then evaluate and compare. Without plans, it’s very easy for company to win your business with a low number, only to realize costs grow after you design and plan your budget.
- What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?
Shopping for contractors based solely off lowest pricing is typically the start of a frustrating experience. How much attention a contractor spends on your project is typically relative to how valuable it is to them. Instead, shop for the relationship and accessibility to the General Contractor you will receive. You are looking for someone who is easy to get a hold of when issues arrive and acts as a concierge who can navigate the experience easily should issues arise . Ask for references, check the ROC license number, call their references. Request their certificate of insurance, do they use a project management software?If these items are provided quickly and easily upfront to you, it’s a good sign that the contractor has done this before, they are clean and organized, and they have a clean business history with the ROC.
