About this pro

How does your service stand out?

I have found some great ways for children and adult piano students to learn to play the piano wherever they are in the world. They also have access to online and live coaching on their playing. I also teach locally in two location in the Phoenix, Arizona area. After teaching in traditional ways for many years, I have found that getting students to develop playing skills before learning music notation is the most natural way to be successful. This approach provides increased motivation and confidence at the keyboard and it accelerates learning.

What do you enjoy about the work you do?

70% of adults wish they had learned a musical instrument. My mission is to change those numbers. Helping children and adults to play a song they like and bring music into their life is amazing. And nowadays, it's easier to achieve than ever.

We found Applegate Music Studio online after taking one year of lessons with a different instructor. My child wanted to quit piano altogether, but I suggested we try something different first. My child was able to play, ACTUALLY play a song after one 30 minute lesson and had not been able to do that with the former instruction we had done. My child was hooked and thrilled after that first lesson, and has been learning and growing immensely after every lesson since then. Terry is a patient and knowledgeable instructor. We are very pleased with our child's accomplishment and learning with this studio. We highly recommend this studio.

After only spending 7 weeks with Terry so far, he has discovered qualities in my voice that I never knew I was capable of. Along with instructing voice lessons, he also works with anyone interested in learning how to play piano. He has many years experience, and works well with any age group that is attempting to improve on their skills in music. I asked him for all types of feedback (yes, the things I could improve on too), and he has always delivered helpful advice. If you're willing to work on your talents, he is the instructor to assist in that journey.

Terry provided voice and piano instruction on a weekly basis. He was always prompt with the appointments and prepared. He was flexible when needed and blended lessons based on my requests as an adult learner.

Terry Smith is an excellant piano teacher. He is very knowledgeable in technique and the history of music. He was always on time and ended on time for his next student. He always made lessons enjoyable.

Q&A

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
I want to make sure they know what to expect since I use non-traditional approaches to learning. I also explore how each student learns best so we can make it an easy process.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I hold a Bachelors degree in Music Education and Theater Arts and have done work towards a Masters degree in Music Education. I also attend conferences and workshops to enhance my teaching skills.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your service? If so, please share the details here.
Pricing is $25 per 30-minute lesson and less for online instruction. No long-term contracts.
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
Many students still learn by a books-only method. They are not bad but frequently, progression is slower without utilizing technology. It's amazing how fast students learn when technology allows them to help interact with the music. If you've tried learning to play piano before and had a negative experience, this method will be like a new world of learning for you. How we learn a musical instrument can make the difference in being successful and being frustrated.
