After moving into my new home, I had a good amount of junk/trash that I needed hauled away. I had received several quotes but Johns was the lowest and the only one with a set price. John and his crew came to my house promptly, they were professional, and very nice. After talking with them, they told me they do yard clean up too. They gave me a very reasonable estimate and I plan to set that up for next week. Excellent service.

It has been about two weeks since Ricks team at transformers landscaping finished my full front/back yard remodel and my wife and I could not be happier. When Rick came over to give us a quote all the costs he give where very much on target with our expectations and he never pushed anything we didn't want. Once the team was on sight and working I almost didn't recognize my own home. Even with all the demolition being done the team always left the area looking nice, sweeping up and not leaving a mess. When all the demo was done the landscaping really hit into high gear, coming home to a large patch of artificial grass or a lovely vegetable planter built. I always felt I could approach anyone on the transformers landscaping team and ask questions about what was being done if I was curious. Everyone on the team was also always very polite and courteous. One of the biggest issues with our house had always been the lack of landscaping, now thanks to Rick and his team our house is the envy of the neighborhood.

After remodeling our two bathrooms, which Geoff did a fantastic job by paying attention to "all" the details, we have had him back several times for a variety other jobs. Each time he does a job for us we are confident he will treat us fairly and will do excellent work. He has become our go-to guy when we need home repairs or upgrading. We couldn't be happier with his work. Give him a call, you won't regret it.

Jairo was a joy to work with. Not only did he produce an outstanding result on my bathroom tile job (pictures to follow) but he was respectful, quiet, detail oriented, skilled, and made certain to consult with me on any changes. I will hire him again for future home improvements.

My home needed Stucco repairs and a paint job. I got estimates from contractors on Thumbtack and Oscar's estimate was the best. i notified Oscar that their company was the one we were going to go with and the next day they were at my home working. They showed up early every day and took just three days to complete the Stucco repairs and paint my home and block walls. They do quality work.

I originally hired Ociel to do some cleanup on my yard so I could do sod installation... it ended up being a bigger project than I thought so I asked Ociel if he could do the installation. It took a while because I didn't need very much sod for my small yard, and the home improvement stores kept being bought out by big companies, but we finally got some. He did a great job!! I was worried about it not taking root because of the heat but it looks so good. I will definitely be using Ociel in the future.

First and for most he made us feel comfortable! It’s hard to find people like Gary! My Dog hates just about everyone with Gary immediate comfort! Professional & his communication was elite! When assembling all of our IKEA furniture (which was a lot) he did it quickly and the right way! My wife had a huge smile on her face when she came home to it completely built! Enough can not be said about how happy we are! We will use him and refer him anytime! Thank you again Gary!

Remodeled Kitchen, opened up a room by removing a wall, refinished kitchen cabinets, installed an island, installed new flooring throughout home. Team was great at communication throughout the process. Stayed on budget and finished a day earlier than had been initially projected. Overall it went great!

Bellino Contracting was amazing to work with. Very professional, thorough and knowledgeable. I got accurate quotes and the invoices were detailed and well explained. They showed up to work 6 days a week and really worked hard. Donnie (the tile/stone guy) was incredible at his craft. Both he and Tim (Bellino) were easy to talk to and answered each and every question I had. Each part of my renovation/remodel was explained in detail and I got insight, direction and tips to save money and add value to my home. I would definitely recommend them for any project, big or small. Bellino Contracting will be the first call I make anytime I have a project or idea for my house. AAA+++

Jesus and his crew were exceptional. He was the only company that contacted me, when I had to delay the work, to see if he could give us a bid. He showed up on time and sent an itemized bid, something none of the other companies did. This was a large project, 3.5 days, and he and his crew did more than was asked for in 111 degree weather. My home looks lovely now that he has cleaned and trimmed all our landscape. I plan on using him for future work.

This is the most fantastic interior designer I have ever worked with. I have built or moved into 7 homes in my life always using an interior designer. Leslie far surpasses any of the others. Leslie can provide the interior design for one’s home around customers’ desires. I wanted someone who would design around my likes and dislikes and not come with a specific style that was hers. Leslie exceeded my expectations in this area. Leslie is exacting, has high expectations of the contractors and subcontractors she works with, and is persistence about getting everything according to the design. Leslie was always there when needed thus making the process go very smoothly. She was timely in her ideas and in carrying them out. One thing any home owner desires it to stay within budget. Leslie was very cost effective in her selections and saved me quite a bit of money. I was happy with every aspect of her design talent. I recommend her without hesitation.

He showed us videos and pictures of other jobs he had done and explained the entire process from start to finish for what to expect. He was very friendly and easy to work with.

Mr. Franco Chimienti, of HOME BUILDERS, LLC., has successfully completed several major remodeling & new construction projects for us since 2007. He and his associates have always provided timely, professional, quality, & exceptional customer services. He has always attempted to complete our projects on schedule & with in the budget we've agreed to. However, during these projects, he was willing to consider & accommodate design changes based on our request; that did require adjustments / modifications to both schedule completion & budget. He provided sound practical guidance & recommendation (tactfully) on how our projects could be accomplished in the most cost effective, efficient, & functional manner, based on his technical expertise & knowledge. I do highly recommend that Mr. Franco Chimienti, be considered for any new construct or remodeling projects.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.

How do I remodel my bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling is made up of three general phases. The first phase is the planning and permitting phase, in which you determine exactly what you want, what materials and finishes will be used, and what the end product will look like. If you’re competent with design you can handle the planning yourself, or you may hire an interior designer to guide you. During this phase you’ll also hire a general contractor who can help execute your remodel vision, coordinating and overseeing all the subcontractors required to do the bathroom remodeling (plumbers, flooring pros, etc.). When your plan is finalized, your contractor should obtain permits for the work you want done. During this time you’ll work together to order all the materials so they’ll be ready and waiting when it’s time to start construction.

The second phase is construction. Bathroom remodeling typically starts with demolition, removing the old floors, shower and vanity to make way for the new. Delays in delivery of materials, or changing your mind and ordering different materials halfway into the project, will mean that construction has to pause until the new materials arrive. Each subcontractor is dependent on the next to do their work, and the general contractor should keep things moving along at the proper timeline, ensuring that the right materials are available and dealing promptly with any unexpected repairs, such as damage discovered behind the walls or under the floor. The general contractor will also coordinate inspections from the necessary officials if you’ve moved load-bearing walls or done electrical or plumbing work. After construction is complete, the final phase of bathroom remodeling is addressing your punch list. These are all the items that need to be corrected before final payment is handed over to the contractor.
