Wish there was an option for more than 5 stars. Rick and his team removed a huge pine tree (at least 3x the height of our house) from our front yard, hauled away all the wood and cleaned up the debris. Rick and his team members were courteous and professional, arrived at the scheduled time and demonstrated tremendous knowledge and skill. Rick cut the tree and had it drop exactly where he said it would. It was an impressive sight to see, and the accuracy was truly amazing. Rick and his team did an exceptional job and the hard work was much appreciated. We are more than pleased, and will definitely refer friends and family to Rick for any future landscape and/or tree trimming/removal work. He truly demonstrated that he is a top-notch professional and an expert in his field. He is, without a doubt, the one to choose for any tree trimming/removal and landscaping needs.

Larry and his crew did a great job in helping to landscape our side yard. He was quick to respond to my request and followed through with good pricing, great service and a real attention to making sure the job was done right and cleaned up after the work was done. He's creative and helped me with a design for the project. I'd recommend Larry to anyone facing a design or landscape challenge.

We hired Oscar Silva and Silva Diversified Construction, LLC, to replace an old, degraded asphalt driveway with concrete aggregate. We also had them extend utilities onto a landscaped island to provide water and electrical service. Oscar suggested he add landscaping lighting during the project and we agreed. The project just finished up and we are pleased beyond our expectations. This was not our "first rodeo" when it comes to hiring contractors, but we have never made a better choice. The task was performed up to workmanlike standards and the quality of craftsmanship is evident. The transformation is dazzling and we have already received numerous compliments from our neighbors. His bid came in lower than I had anticipated and the work was done perfectly and right on schedule. His crew was professional and friendly and obviously takes great care in the quality of their work. Oscar was in constant contact with us, working with us closely every step of the way, and provided on-site direction and leadership that evidenced his sense of care and professionalism. We give Oscar Silva and Silva Diversified Construction our highest recommendation.

Conscientious workers, artistic vision, and a thoroughly beautiful completed job I hired Forrest Cowle of American Landscape Design to remove overgrown “trash plantings” in the backyard of my new home and to cover most of the area with pavers. The patio already had some pavers, and Forrest sought out the matching materials to complete my project. The patio is now bordered nicely with desert-adapted but still lush and green plantings (nandina, pyracantha, leucophyllums, and salvia, for ex.); the irrigation systems are repaired; and Forrest also cleared out the overgrowth of succulents that was crowding the front walkway. Safety and being able to walk on an even surface was one of my prime concerns, plus wanting an inviting place to cook-out and relax; the finished job has provided that and nore. Forrest’s crew (which included Mark, Mo, and Tommy) were all pleasant, polite, and professional. Even though this was a rather big project, requiring a load of sand and pallets of pavers, Forrest and Mark always made certain the site was as neat as possible during the work and at the end of each day. I was always informed of progress and was consulted if changes were needed. Any emergencies or unexpected developments were handled promptly and professionally. Forrest and his crew shared my vision and contributed artistically to the nearly final finished product. Some re-plantings must wait until the danger of a hard freeze has passed.

My wife and I hired Az Custom Landscapes LLC to install nearly 540 sq ft of synthetic grass on the side of our backyard. The material he used appears to be high quality and USA made. Martin was very professional and the work quality from him and his employees were above reproach. I highly recommend Az Custom Landscapes LLC for any synthetic grass installations.

Del Toro Fence Solutions is an excellent value for fence installation. We had ~1700 feet of wire fence installed on our property. While shopping for competition, we received estimates from 3 other local businesses on price, experience, and material quality, and Del Toro came in on top. The quality of work was also good and they met all build expectations. The owner is courteous, they finished the work on schedule, and were responsive to my questions and needs. Overall, it was a very good experience, and an excellent value.

My experience with Ray, who owns Perfection Landscape, was awesome. We met and discussed what I wanted (new gazebo assembled and installed, new pavers, two new flower planters with water installed to them, electric to the gazebo, a new sprinkler system and new grass). From the very beginning Ray was professional, courteous, on time, and very attentive to my questions. He explained how he would mount the gazebo on footers so it will be very stable - I live in an area where micro-bursts are common in the summer months. He explained the work being done with every aspect of the job. I knew when the crews were going to be at my home and when they would finish each day. Ray's crews were as professional as he is. The project was completed in the time frame given to me by Ray. I have already referred Ray and Perfection Landscape to others in my neighborhood and will definitely continue to do so. Ray believes in detail and it shows in his work! Ray's pricing is very competitive with other contractors in the city. In closing I want to say that Ray is a "hands on" contractor. He doesn't just turn the crew loose. HE is a member of the crew doing the job. Thank you Ray for an excellent job!!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
