John is a good guy and smart and did very well with the job limitations and mostly gave us what we needed. However, he charges a premium price so I would have expected a premium product which I did not receive. Our custom shed project got started with a last minute 3-day delay on my part. John claimed that he had temporarily shut down his Thumbtack account in anticipation of being busy on my 2 week project. Since I did not want to pay him for 3 days that he may or may not have gotten work, he opted not to complete the shed. Therefore, he did not install the roof or paint the shed and I doubt he will come back to fix the doors that do not work properly (see details below) The project that I hired him for was a lean-to shed to be built to exactly match another shed I had on site. The example shed has painted siding and the mortised hinged doors are made with siding also. He agreed to match the other shed but after the project got underway and he had been paid 50% up front, he convinced me to do a different and simpler type of door. His framing and siding work was good but the doors will have to be redone since the door wood twists and warps in the rain and they do not close properly during wet seasons that the wood expands. Also, the example shed I asked him to mimic was painted but he was surprised that I thought that painting was included in the $5000 price he charged me for a 3ftx6ftx7ft tall shed. So he also did not paint the shed. He did apply one coat of paint to the stucco wall that the shed leans against. He did another small carpentry project for me before that as well, and overall, I would say that his price of $60/hour is too high for his skill and speed level. Note to self, that if you have a largish building project like a shed or fence, it is advisable for the contractor to own a truck, which John did not, so in addition to his hourly rate, he asked me to pay for the $50 truck rental which we ended up splitting.

John Mcfarland does great work! I hired him to install a pre-purchased doggie door in our laundry room wall so our dog has easy access to the backyard, and he did a wonderful job. It looks very nice, and his pricing seems real fair, too. Friendly, skillful, dependable, AND affordable. What more could you want in a handyman? I’m sure we’ll be hiring him again for various future projects.

John was hired for several disparate jobs at my house. He is a very pleasant person and does an excellent job. Our stuff was mostly electrical with some assorted small jobs thrown in the mix. John arrived right on the clock and finished in a very reasonable timeframe. Great value for money as well. Will recommend him for any handman project enthusiastically!!

Scheduled an appointment, something came up. John had to cancel. He was kind enough to alert me that he couldn’t make it.
