How much does a licensed electrician cost per hour?

An electrician’s average hourly rate is $75, but this price can range from $45-$120, depending on the complexity of the job and the materials needed. The total cost will also vary depending on how long your job takes and if the electrician charges for travel time.

Your location may also be a factor in determining the hourly rate of performing electrical work on your home. To get an accurate estimate of how much electrical work will cost you, contact the best electricians near you to receive free quotes.

What do I need an electrician for?

Electricians can help with a variety of electricity-related jobs around your home. If you have a new home, they can install new wiring throughout. Or if you have an old home, they can help with wiring repair.

If your lights keep flickering, circuit breakers seem to be faulty, or outlets don’t have any power, electricians can assist in sorting out the problem. Your house is full of electrical circuits, wiring and sockets that may need repair or updating. These tasks can be safely completed by electricians in your area.

How do I hire an electrician?

Go online to find a list of the best electricians in your area. View each individual electrician’s profile and learn more about their services and expertise. Then, read reviews from satisfied customers as well as any issues they may have encountered. This will help you find one with the right experience to work safely in your home.

You should also spend some time researching what qualifications and credentials they have. You might find information about their license on their profile, or you might need to check your local and state government’s website to verify their license.

Once you’ve done a bit of research, ask to receive free estimates from several electricians in your area. Ultimately, hire the most qualified electrician who can complete your project at a reasonable price.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic, ensure that you are performing as much of the process digitally as possible. The best way to begin is by conducting an online search for local electricians. Ask if they can perform consultations over a phone or video call to comply with social distancing mandates. You should also discuss a strategy for how to complete the project during social distancing or whether the project should be completed once the pandemic has ended.

Is it worth it to hire an electrician?

Yes, it's usually worth it to hire an electrician instead of doing the work yourself.

Electrical work can be very dangerous. The pros spend many years working and studying before they become licensed and certified. That knowledge and training can help them work safely and perform the job without harming themselves or your home.

Even a small wiring repair job can be unsafe if not done correctly. Hiring someone that has specialized training on how to do each specific job is the safest choice.

What questions should I ask an electrician?

Here are a few questions you should ask any electrician you’re considering hiring:

  • Are you licensed or certified? A professional electrician should have this information ready and up to date.
  • Do you have any references? Ask for references to learn about their work history from previous customers. You may be able to look online at reviews, but it’s also good to speak to someone to find out their experience with this electrician.
  • What types of services do you offer? Whether you need repairs or installation services, make sure the electrician can perform the work you need.
  • How long will the job take? This will help you set expectations and rearrange your schedule (if needed).
  • Can you send me free estimates? Request a job quote or estimate. This will help with comparing different electricians. The numbers may vary, but be sure to factor in the experience of each person, as well as the scope of electrical work you’re asking about.

How can I find out if an electrician is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines are available from both local and federal government agencies to clarify which services qualify as essential during the COVID-19 pandemic. To determine whether an electrician is considered an essential service provider in your area, check your city or state’s government websites.

For federal guidelines, consult CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 page, which outlines 16 critical infrastructure sectors. But not that some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire an electrician when social distancing?

If you decide to hire an electrician, choose virtual platforms for consultations like calling or video chats. Avoid any physical contact with the electrician, wave instead of shaking hands, stay 6 feet away, sanitize shared surfaces and use digital payment apps instead of cash.

Can I use digital payments to pay for electrical and wiring repair?

These days, many electricians will accept digital payments for electrical work and wiring repair instead of traditional cash or check. The COVID-19 pandemic has helped speed up the adoption of platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and others as a means of complying with social distancing guidelines.

As you search for electricians online, ask whether they’ll accept digital payment and set up a strategy for staying safe.

I hired Isaiah to install a dedicated outlet to charge my electric vehicle. He was able to install it within 48 hours of contacting him. His work is fast, professional, and the value is way better compared to other local electricians -- around 75% cheaper! I'm keeping Isaiah in my contacts for any and all future electrician work. He's the best!

Luis did a great job for my mom, quickly, efficiently and at a reasonable price. He even fixed a very unprofessional mounting job (electricians tape lol) by a previous "fix". She can happily use her a/c now. Thank you so much!

I had two things to be installed. One was the FEIT smart dimmer and Broan humidity sensing bathroom exhaust fans in two bathrooms. Each of them was wired wrong. FEIT was not working at all and exhaust fans were not working as intended. The root cause was wrong wiring that was done. I sat down and spent some time to read the manuals to figure things out and got them working. If a professional electrician cannot read simple installation manual and do the job right that is TERRIBLE.

Mo was amazing. No nonsense, straight to work without the fluff. I never met a HandyMan/Electrician who wears slacks and a Polo shirt LOL. (Let’s not forget the Mask & Shoe coverings) I LOVE IT!! He takes pride in his appearance as well as his work. He completed two jobs today - replaced a ceiling fan and mounted a TV on the wall (reference pics.) I’m a Very Happy Homeowner. I will definitely hire him again, for my next project.

This was the one electrician that answered my phone call and was willing to drive to my home forty miles away He was prompt and professional; a very kind and respectful person. His work is excellent and thorough. He is ready to work and brings or purchases all equipment. The worksite is left clean. There is always a follow up phone call and any problems are handled immediately; even on a Sunday. The cost is very reasonable. The problem is researched until it is solved. I have had many technicians in my home and this is the best. I am very pleased and grateful.

Saul is such a dedicated, hardworking and professional electrician. He went above and beyond with the sub-panel replacement that he replaced yesterday. There was an outage that occured that night but he responded the next day first thing in the morning. He even waited to ensure that all systems were going before he left He is kind, patient and always open to answer any questions or concerns you may have about your project. He is an honest person and very personable. Please know that you can count on him for any and every electrical project big or small. Thank you so much Saul, you are so appreciated!

I needed an electrician to install a new sub panel for a newly purchased EV to charge with and also install a power back up generator inlet box. Chris from C & G Electrical Handymen sent me a message about my project. He was very communicative and made informative suggestions to simplify my ideas. He was aware of what I wanted installed and knew just how to go about doing it. After numerous messages about the project I was confident in hiring him for the job. He was punctual on the scheduled day. He took the time to make sure the install was correctly in placed, the proper rated wiring was used and even weather proofing the inlet box that was installed outside. After the job was complete Chris cleaned up and vacuum the area he worked in. All in all I’m impressed with the quality of work Chris has done for my project. My mind is at ease that everything was done correctly. Thank you Chris!

There had been a few instances throughout my conversations with Richard where it makes him stand out from other electricians I’ve spoken to. The level of knowledge that he has and the can-do attitude, makes him stand out among others. When he is confident about a project, it in turn also makes you feel confident about investing money in those projects in your home. I like how easy-going he was in recommending fixtures to install, when I don’t already have it ready at-hand. I was able to make a quick run to HomeDepot while he worked on installing the rest of bath fans in my house (which I had prepared). I’ve discussed further projects with him before he left and I know I’m in good hands when the time comes for those projects to be done in a few weeks/months. I also wanted to give a shout-out to his team, they were all very professional, kept the entire work area clean and did not leave any messes for me to clean up. I’m so glad we picked RES Electric for our jobs. Thanks again so much!
