Dave is more than outstanding. Not only is he professional, he can also think on this feet to resolve a very difficult door issues that we had for a long time. We live in a high end home and had 2 contractors work on the problem Each improved the situation slightly but the cause of the problem was never truly understood until Dave came along. One reputable door company even tried to sell me a new door. Initially, I was extremely wary of using someone from Thumbtack as there was no way to check credentials and bona fide references. Dave has certainly surprised us on the upside. He is cost conscious for his clients and does not recommend a more expensive solution if a cheaper one can be had. I watched Dave work the entire 2 hours he was here. He spent a great deal of time troubleshooting and then came up with a game plan that we both agreed would be ideal. He's a hard worker and an intelligent one at that. In the future, I will call on Dave to do maintenance work on our home without the slightest reservation. Ting P.

I needed door bolts installed into my doors. The cuts in the doors where measure out correctly and placed perfectly. The latch on the opposite door was perfectly positioned and the door latches in a perfect fit. Harp is punctual and professional. He introduces himself, gets to work quickly. He is meticulous about getting the woodwork perfect and astheticallly pleasing to the eye. Unlike every other handyman I called, Harp answers the phone or will call back within an hour or two. He is available, even into the late hours of the evening. He was available to help me with a 24-48 hour notice. Every other handyman I called either didn't return the call, called back several days later or just outright not available for several weeks out. His prices are reasonable. He will give you an estimate prior to the job and will keep that promised price even if the job becomes difficult. He is also generous. Although he was hired to install doorbolts, he fixed a problem that I had with my door knobs just because he wanted everything to look uniform. Harp is available for work, professional, and does really good work. I will be hiring him again.

Cruz was amazing! He was able to complete our project (blinds installation) plus a bunch more (adding electrical outlets, running cable through a crawl space, fixing door jambs, etc.). He was great to work with, and came back several times to help with other projects. We will definitely hire him again the next time we need a handyman.

While I had a good experience with avantguard, he inadvertently chipped our door removing the lock. The knob of another door that he installed is now loose (I am hoping he will come back and fix and I will update this rating.)

Had my bathroom remodeled by DYI (semi-professional); resulted in unfinished grout, and shower door would not close/open properly. Bill was able to spot and explain the problems in a few minutes. He finished the uneven grout, and gave us a remedy for the shower door.

Very good job. I rarely give out 5/5 but they're 4.5/5 job for sure. Ana is super fast, responsive via message on Thumbtack even when I didn't have a phone with me. Moving recently to the city I've been looking for a regular cleaner - I have found them here! Staff came on time. Friendly. Did thorough job on organizing, folding, sweeping, scrubbing, mopping, trash, cleaning - basically left my 1300+ sq ft place ready as I leave on my 3 week vacation - stress free. They also make you check completed cleaning before they leave to ensure they're done a good job. Btw, I booked them last minute. I contacted Ana - the crew showed up at my door all in less than 4 hours. That's what I call FAST & PROMPT service!

Jasper was on time, responsive, and did an incredibly high quality paint job on our cabinets and even helped us install new handles, knobs, and hinges in a short amount of time. Our kitchen and bathrooms now have a great new 21st century look (updated from its original 80's look and feel). The quote we were given was extremely fair. For the overall experience of this job - the only word that can be used here is indeed 'outstanding'.

Charles did an excellent job fixing some 3 sticky doors that weren't working smoothly. He knows all the tips and tricks. Each door had its own set of issues from strike plate offsets to the jamb not being square due to settling, he diagnosed and resolved each one and gave me tips on how to refinish the jambs after his alterations so adjustments and minor cracks are totally invisible. He's happy to answer questions and offers great value. Having him come back for more work soon.

We had Ryan over yesterday to repair 3 interior doors in a very old and actually historic San Franciscan Victorian house. In addition to the three interior doors, Ryan painted the front door which had also just been replaced. His attention to detail was great, there were constant adjustments to make sure everything fit, latched, matched, didn't drag, looked great, etc. His response was prompt, he replied almost immediately and was available to start the very next day. He came prepared for the job, from start to finish. Ryan is very up front and fair in terms of compensation. You will have zero issue with the transparency and fairness of his bids. It should also be noted that this is a very old building. The areas where the door hinges connected to the wall/door frame were extremely dilapidated, the wood was old and and over drilled. It was like putty. But Ryan rocked it. Not only did Ryan pay close attention to the style of the Victorian building and matched the details perfectly, his finished product was seamless. You can't even tell that work had been done. There wasn't even dust on the floor. It was legit, honest good work. 100% recommend.

Rafael is very professional. I hired him for a number of projects, such as installing dishwasher, range hood, kitchen faucet, door locks, garbage disposal, outdoor light fixtures, fixing windows handle, etc. He did amazing job and quality work. For example, previous cabinet is 36in (two 18in doors). Rafael installed 24in dishwasher and made a 12in door like the original cabinet. It is really amazing. When he finished his work everyday, he always cleaned everything up. He also cares about details. I would like to recommend him to everyone, and I would like to hire him again for my future projects.

Ron was great! I had 11 old door knobs that needing rekeying. The first locksmith I talked to said it couldn’t be done because the locks were old. Ron was able to do it, which saved me from having to buy new hardware. Thanks Ron!

Vai was a true life-saver - he answered my request on a Sunday within a couple minutes, and was at my place within 20 to help me get in after I got locked out. He was careful not to damage our older front door and lock, and helped me get back in through a different door that I didn't think could be an option. I hope I don't need to hire him again, but he will be my first call if I do!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How does a locksmith open a locked door?

Locksmiths use specialized tools and techniques to open your door in the case of lockouts or lost keys. Trained locksmiths can pick your door lock with lock-picking tools such as a rake, a tension wrench, a half diamond or a hook. They may use a technique called bumping, which will work on pin tumbler locks, or as a last resort they may use a drill to remove your existing lock. The national average locksmith price ranges between $70 and $100. A locksmith can also replace your current lock system, re-key your locks if you have lost your keys, repair a broken lock, install a deadlock and more. Locksmiths not only help with front doors, they can help if you are locked out of your car, locked out of your mailbox, locked out of your shed … you name it. There may be an additional charge for emergency after-hours locksmith services. Check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to have a deadbolt lock installed?

Installing a new deadbolt lock can improve your home security, especially if you think your current lock system has been compromised or there are unaccounted-for copies of your house keys in circulation. A professional locksmith can install a new deadbolt for you in a matter of hours. The national average locksmith price ranges from $70 to $100. Locksmith prices for installing deadbolts may be higher based on whether the professional provides the lock or you have it on hand, how many components the locking system includes, and how long the installation takes. The cost to purchase a lock yourself from a big-box store can range from approximately $70 to $225 or more, depending on quality and materials. Higher-security locks often take longer and therefore cost more to install.

How much does it cost to make a new key for a car?

Locksmiths’ prices for making new car keys can vary depending on the make of your car as well as the time of day and location. The national average locksmith price ranges from $70 to $100, but duplicating a key may cost as little as $30, while extraction a key stuck in the ignition, cutting a new key and programming the fob can cost much more.

You might need a new car key if you have lost your key, the key broke in the ignition, the key is bent or damaged, or you just want a duplicate in case of emergency. You can request a duplicate of a key you have on hand, or you can have a new key made or cut if you have lost your original car keys. If you need to replace lost keys, you’ll need to first provide proof that you are the owner of the car along with the vehicle identification number (VIN). If you’re just locked out of your car but don’t need a key made, a locksmith may charge $65 to get you back in. Locksmith car key services are often far more affordable than dealership prices for new keys.

How much does it cost for a car locksmith?

There are several reasons you may need a car locksmith. You may be locked out of your car (either with the keys inside or with no keys at all), you may have lost your car keys and need a new key, or you may want to make a duplicate car key. The national average locksmith price ranges from $70 to $100. Getting locked out of your car can be scary and overwhelming — especially if it’s cold and dark out. Fortunately, professional locksmiths provide round-the-clock assistance to help people in these circumstances.

Car lockouts are one of the main reasons people need a locksmith. Your locksmith’s price can depend on the type of car you have, the time of day (or night) it is, and where you are located. Locksmith pricing may be based on a flat rate, or pricing may be quoted to you after the locksmith determines the circumstances. For example, a flat rate for a car lockout could be $65 for standard vehicles. That price could be higher for after-hours or long-distance service, or service during extreme weather. If you have entirely lost your car keys, a locksmith can make you a new car key, but first they must verify that you are the owner of the car. Locksmiths can even program new car key fobs for you — often at a lower price than a dealership.
