Thank you, Tom!!! Tom came out on July 4th to help me, after another Thumbtack “pro” no-showed the prior day. AMAZING. It was a fairly simple job but it meant a great deal to me that he completed it on a holiday. Tom was totally professional, polite, and helpful in every way. I highly recommend Tom and will definitely reach out to him again for home repairs needs.

Kerry was awesome! I had over 15 original pieces and 2 special mirrors that all definitely required a special talent to correctly hang on the walls of my new home. They ranged from small to large and Kerry was able to get it done exactly how I wanted it in a timely manner. I would recommend Kerry to anyone looking for a true professional to hang their art.

Andy came out on a late Sunday afternoon to repair an electrical issue for our water pump. He was able to repair the problem quickly and advise me on what I will need for future repairs. His price was resonable for coming on a rainy day when no one else would or could. I would recommend Andy to anyone that wants professional and fast service. I plan on using him for future projects.

I’m a handyman who knows nothing about electrical. When I came across some electrical issues I called a friend I trust to see if they knew an electrician. My friend referred Mr. Poole and I was very pleased with him all around. I thought that I may need to replace about a dozen exterior lights on a property and almost order them but Mr. Poole advised me they could be repaired. In stead of my client having to spend over 2 grand on new lights they were able to all be repaired for about $75! Overall he’s a solid guy.

I called Bob to get a quote for water heater pipe leak. After describing the problem, Bob gave me an quick estimate. He came out within couple hours later to fix the leak. While performing the repair, Bob called to let me know it would be an additional $30 to replace the shut off valve. The cost of the entire repair was exactly what he had quoted me. I was very happy with the service and repair. I would highly recommend Muller Plumbing Services.

We had a leaking dishwasher that apparently had been leaking for some time without our knowledge and caused some water damage. We had him demolish part of our kitchen because the problem was somewhat extensive and put in new cupboards and a kitchen sink, as well as repair some drywall and he did a brilliant job. I will definitely hire Miguel in the future without hesitation. I contacted Thumbtack late Friday afternoon, approx 5-6pm and I saw that I had a response from Miguel by 8.15pm. I replied not expecting a response until the next morning, but instead I had an appt for Miguel to come out and inspect the job the next day and he started work on the following day (Sunday) and completed the job on Monday. Miguel's prices are more than reasonable and I am glad I found him.

We will definitely call Ryan again anytime we need a handyman. His prices are reasonable and we are very pleased we decided to hire him.He installed a new garbage disposal and it is working great. Ryan is knowledgeable about a wide range of home repair needs and replaced an electrical outlet for us as well. We had been having trouble with an outlet on our porch and when I mentioned it to him as he was leaving, he pulled a new one out of his extensive tool kit and fixed it on the spot. I highly recommend him for both the quality of his work and his friendly, positive attitude.

Chris is a great plumber who truly values making sure your home is operational and safe. He is a no-nonsense guy and does not quote you by job but by hour which makes it the best way to truly feel you are getting your monies worth. He also came back free of charge a few weeks later just to make sure all of his repairs worked effectively.

Thumbtact did the "Blind/Shade Repair" research for me and several companies contacted me and gave me a quote to repair my two sets of French door shades. I went with Todd Ashley of AB Blinds. Upon arrival Todd examined my two sets of French door shades and told me that only one set of French door shades needed repair. Todd completed the repair in less than an hour. The final price was obviously less than the quote. The shades work like new and I am very happy with the work that was done and the price I paid.

Dean was very responsive to my needs and would not hesitate to hire him again. We discussed the scope and costs of my project and he did exactly what we discussed and provided valuable input to help complete the project to ensure it was done right. I own a custom home so many contractors try to take advantage of this but Dean was honest and charged me a very reasonable price. Nice job!

Albert and his team have come though for me countless times over 10 years. He has repaired and recovered home sofas, brought my '64 Caddilac deVille back to factory interior, replaced the convertible top with a modern look. Most recently he did a 100% custom interior on my '59 Apache Truck including seats, carpet, and headliner all at an amazing value and always with a huge smile. Thanks Again, Eric G @paitina_apache

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.
