Michael did an awesome job! He was prompt and went the extra mile to make my entire bathroom and shower tile sparkle. He was even able to make my pebble stone, shower floor shine. He also repaired some sections where the caulking had been poorly done by the original contractor at no additional cost. I will definitely use him for all of my future jobs.

Robert repaired stone and stucco that was severely damaged when a vehicle backed into an exterior wall. In addition to the repair itself he was on time as promised for his estimate and the day of work and completed project on time... with shuffling kids to and from school, practice, etc., it is refreshing to have someone show up when they say they will be there.

We interviewed several landscape designers and loved the vision Patricia had for our space during her initial visit. She had so many great suggestions and ideas which were the perfect complements to our initial concept. She even went out to a rock quarry and picked out an amazing and perfectly shaped stone for the entrance making a great initial impression on our guests. She’s very passionate about what she does and took the time to educate us along the way to make sure we were prepared to take care of our plants for the long haul. Patricia is awesome!

I found Jose to be extremely knowledgeable about his craft during our initial meeting. Upon discussing the plan for desert landscaping on my front lawn, he followed up with a design drawing and ideas to enhance the overall look. Jose handpicked all of the large boulders and pond stones that were to make up the flowing rock river. He was also helpful in the drought resistant plant selection and worked closely with my wife and I on their placement within the landscape. Jose and his staff were professional, showed up on time and worked extremely hard during some pretty intense outdoor temperatures to get the job completed within a set timeframe. Jose and his staff were very conscientious of not doing any damage to my driveway as the large boulders and assorted stones were delivered to my home. They worked hard to ensure that we were happy with the final result. My wife and I felt that our expectations were exceeded and our two young girls said, "We feel like we're at a resort". Our neighbors have also weighed in with very positive feedback on the new landscaping. Finally, Jose stayed as close to our starting budget as possible. Any budgetary changes were brought to our immediately. I would highly recommend Jose Silva Landscaping for your landscaping needs.

Thomas Camarena Landscapes is wonderful! They cleaned up my neglected, weed-filled backyard and installed a path with stepping stones. They were more than patient with the process of placing the path which took some time and thought. They were fast, efficient, well-priced, and excellent to work with. They transformed my backyard and I think they are great! I recommend them highly.

It's been a pleasure to work with David the past couple of years. There are two main great things I can say that David and his crew have done. Most recently, they cleared brush and thinned our trees away from the power lines so we are now in compliance with the City of Los Angeles requirements. He was also very patient with my husband and I while we tried to agree as to what to do with our front yard. My goal was to take out our old lawn and install 'no-mow' grass. He found the grass for me at a better price than the place that I had originally researched. He also fixed our old sprinklers as well as installed better new sprinkler heads that would work better with this particular grass. He also redid our stone path leading to the house. Even after it was all done, we encountered a couple of problems which he fixed by coming up with great solutions like moving the sprinkler head 2 feet away from where we park the car so we wouldn't trip over it everytime we got in and out of the car.

I wanted a clean, modern xeriscape design to replace an overgrown lawn of crabgrass. I have a mid-century style house and preferred a clean look over mulch. I shared some ideas and she ran with it. The end result is a contemporary design of decomposed granite, succulents and drought tolerant flowering plants. She also installed beautiful stone pathways and a patio area with pavers and pebbles. I enjoyed working with Angela and her team. She was proactive, resourceful and made the whole experience easy for me. When I wanted to make changes while the work was in progress, she worked with me every step of the way. The end result is beautiful and better than I could have imagined. Angela Price can design the garden of your dreams. Professional, organized, knowledgeable, flexible, and creative. Give her your ideas, pictures, sketches, or nothing at all and she will magically transform your space.

Scott did a great job on our house this past summer. He built us an outside patio, tiled it with stone tile. He also built us a new closet which we love a lot. He is cheaper than a contractor and does a perfect job. I recommend his talent.

We received what we felt like was a very fair price to rebuild our brick fireplace and mantle and rebuild with a manufactured stone. He did a great job, worked very very hard to make sure he left us happy, put a good coating on the rock for protection, and hand-built a beautiful box mantle out of custom wood. Took a little bit longer than planned, but ONLY because he was very detailed and wanted things to look right. Considering a second fireplace redo and will call him back!

Let us start by saying that Dave is not only a great general contractor but is more importantly an old-school craftsman. We wanted to totally remodel our kitchen and interviewed a couple of contractors, including Dave. What impressed us most was amount of time, effort, and attention to detail that Dave put into our remodel BEFORE a contract was even presented and agreed upon. Dave met with us on three separate occasions before we formally agreed to engage his services, and each of those meetings lasted more than two hours. Dave's proposal for the remodel was 6 pages long and included every detail as what he would be doing and how he would proceed with the job. Dave covered every detail of his proposal with us and answered every one of our questions. The contract was also detailed and contained a payment schedule that was based upon him completing various stages of the remodel. We had no "buyer's remorse" after we signed that contract since it was clear to us that Dave would do an outstanding job on the remodel. Here are some very important facts for those of you who have had dealings with contractors: (a) Dave told us when the job would start, how long it would take to complete, and the times he would show up and wrap it up for the day. He was true to his word on all of his promises; (b) Dave and his assistant (Rick) do all of the work themselves - with the exception of the fabrication and installation of stone countertops - but don't worry because Dave's stone guy (Ciro) is also top notch. Dave and Rick do the tear out, plumbing, electrical, gas lines, cabinet installation, and the installation of appliances. Nothing is subbed out. And Dave was present for the entire remodel. And not only does Dave do the entire job, he does it with a care, attention to detail, and a precision that is often times lacking in today's contractors. Dave followed the plan he presented to us and the new kitchen unfolded before our eyes. (c) At the end of each day Dave and Rick cleaned up their work area with great care and stored their tools so that nothing was in our way. This was huge for us because we've seen other remodels where the entire house is an unlivable mess and disaster area. We couldn't recommend Dave more. He did the job with great care to quality and detail, he was friendly and approachable, and took the time to explain what he was doing so that there would be no surprises. Dave followed up on the smallest details and took care of everything so that when the kitchen was done it was beautiful and ready to use without any issues.

TurFusion did an awesome job on my front yard. I couldn't of asked for better results. After getting ripped off from my the last contractor. TurFusion came through for your boy. Parrish was coo and professional showed us options and gave us a reasonable price. Abel and his crew was phenomenal. It's hard to find good help these days but that crew was great to work with. Very professional and they love what they do. I highly recommend turfusion.

Working with Lavonne and her crew was a fantastic experience. We had basic idea of what we wanted for our backyard landscaping and Lavonne articulated everything into a perfect plan including some new great ideas. We had nearly 200 feet of parameter planter slump stone wall installed, numerous plants planted within the planter along with drip irrigation. They also installed a new sprinkler system and new sod in the main yard. On the side of the house decomposed granite with a slate pathway and desert landscape plants were planted along with planter boxes for vegetables, also on drip system. Everything turned out great! Her crew are nice and were easy to work with and allowed for minor changes along the way. They also cleaned up at the end of every day. Our yard turned out so nice my neighbor had Cega-Land do their front yard which is the best looking draught tolerant yard we've seen!

I truly can't say enough about our experience working with Builder Brothers. I originally contacted Matan based on a recommendation from close friends. The quality and attention to detail in the work that they have performed for us has definitely surpassed our hopes and expectations. Matan and Dan were a pleasure to deal with and both were incredible in their suggestions and guidance throughout our project. They were always very responsive to our needs and if more information was needed, they provided it. They always returned phone calls immediately. Dan came with us to help pick out the stone and tile and then again to pick out the hardware and lights. The ownership that these guys put into their projects is really undeniable. I would highly recommend Builder Brothers without reservations to anyone looking for construction services. And the kitchen came up beautiful.

WOW these two "Master Gardeners" are IMPRESSIVE. I contacted them to inquire about doing herbs and a organic garden. They were PUNCTUAL to our first meeting and made sure to check in and confirm the time. They are EDUCATED, which showed when they walked me through some of the possibilities during our free consultation. I immediately trusted them because they were enthusiastic about my project and I agreed to let them make my vision come to life. What I did not expect was for them to go ABOVE and BEYOND what was asked. They gave me fresh non-gmo plants and herbs including a cute separate pot filled with strawberries. They were RESOURCEFUL by using my extra bricks and stones from previous construction jobs to create a small oasis for me, which by the way was not previously discussed but I was so grateful for their THOUGHTFULNESS and COMMON SENSE. Throughout the whole process they contacted via text to let me know whenever they were on their way and in my garden. Once completed they educated me on some of the plants and how to take care of them. I opted to have them come back for weekly maintenance to ensure my garden stays in tip top shape. They are definitely ECONOMICAL as well. Last year I tried to do my own gardening and ended up wasting money. I cant wait for what is to come. Oh and super EFFICIENT, I love it when a contractor/gardener/hired gets the job done well and fast and that is what they did. I decided to hire them for another project which is to make new brick planters for the front of my house. Words cannot express that i HIGHLY RECOMMEND them. (I wish I could post the before and after photos to do it some justice but thumbtack doesn't have that option yet)

We had a 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom home addition. We also added a walk in closet and one of the bathrooms is a master bathroom. Richard from Stone Construction is very patient and hardworking. He is detail oriented, and listened to all our wants and needs. He made sure everything was done timely, and efficiently. I was pregnant during our construction, and was worried about it being stressful, but Richard did an amazing job and helped everything go smoothly and turned out great. I would highly recommend Stone Construction for all your construction needs. He's very honest and trustworthy.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
