Introduction: I am teaching in person lessons in Cupertino at Play Music Studios, as well as doing remote lessons for students all over the country! Lessons are $35per half hour, $50 for 45 minutes, or $60.00 per hour. Currently, I teach about 46 students each week. Both remote, and in person. I have 50 years of drumming experience, most as a professional. I love playing, but my passion is teaching others which I have been doing for the past 35 years. I am great with kids, and I have taught many adults. I have numerous students who developed into pro drummers. My first 6 years drumming, I studied with a member of the San Francisco Symphony who was also the house drummer at Bimbos in SF. Under his tutelage I developed a mastery of classical drums while also gaining an understanding of the modern approach to the drum set. I have had the honor to play with some top-notch musicians over the years. My teaching method includes: - Reading all levels in both snare drum and full drum set - Focused snare drum and sticking technique - Focused drum set and “feet techniques” - How to “groove” - Dynamics - Fills, posture and relaxation techniques for greater speed and endurance -Now teaching GADDIMENTS, The new book by legendary Steve Gadd. (In addition to many other great books) One hour lessons include learning to “groove” with a bass player (via accompaniment on the Chapman stick). This is basically a bass and guitar on one neck. All levels are welcome and all styles are covered - rock, jazz, funk, swing, reggae, fusion, ska and more -- just ask! Professional experience includes drumming with The Square Roots, The Road Hogs, The Room Shakers, The Gravity, and many others. There has to be a future of great drummers! Without teachers, there aren't students! I love helping to create future great drummers!

I just had my first lesson with Neil and I can already tell he is a FANTASTIC teacher! I can honestly say I immediately felt like he was the perfect instructor for me. He is incredibly kind and encouraging and has a strong desire to see you succeed in your drumming journey. I really appreciate his structured curriculum and I think it really makes him stand apart from other teachers. I’m confident that I will make a lot of progress working with him! Can’t recommend him more highly!!

Neil is amazing! I had only a small amount of self-taught drum experience from long ago and was nervous about reading music. After my first lesson I knew I was in the right hands to learn to play drums the correct way. He knows his books and lessons like the back of his hand because he's been teaching for so long. Not only is Neil encouraging and supportive, he adds humor and lightness to his lessons. With that friendly demeanor, he firmly makes sure I do every measure correctly before I can move on, and without being a taskmaster. He's a stickler for proper form and execution, but I always know he'll be patient with me as I figure it out, and then tell me a joke to keep it light. In fact, he likes that his students figure things out on their own, and I appreciate that because it makes me remember how to do it the way that makes sense to me and reinforces the confidence I have in my ability. I'm now looking at drum sets and he is super knowledgeable and helpful, checking his suggested websites for the best deal. I feel empowered after every lesson with him and it absolutely makes my week!

Neil has a deep understanding of drumming and an exceptional curriculum. My son appreciates that he knows and can teach many different genres which will help him become a well-rounded drummer. Neil’s patience and sense of humor put my son at ease and make the lessons fun.

Mr. Bettencourt is an amazing teacher! I can tell from just one lesson with him that he is a pro. I learned more in that one lesson than I did in months of lessons with my prior teacher. I’m excited to continue this adventure in drumming!

I have been taking weekly lessons from Neil for about 3 months now, and I have to say I couldn't be happier. He has a great way of getting things to stick in your head by being patient and making sure that you've played the measure correctly at least once, but usually twice, so that you're fine to practice without mistakes when the lesson is over. He's teaching my to read 4 different styles of classic drum notation and after 3 months it's working out wonderfully. I'm cruising through drumming books rather quickly whereas before I started taking lessons it was like looking at hieroglyphs. Super nice guy and he makes the lessons fun, and he absolutely knows his stuff. I highly suggest training with him if you're passionate about drumming.
