Mario was prompt to respond and was able to promise pick up and delivery times and a hassle free move for a flat rate. Moving from LA to the Bay area, it was comforting to know there would be no surprises. His crew is reliable, friendly and trustworthy. The boys did a very good job of safely packing material and ensuring there was not much damage (few dings are unavoidable). I dinged them a star because our delivery was delayed by almost 7 hours for absolutely no fault of the crew but the truck breaking down. For a long move I expect the truck to be ready on all fronts.

Tony was the first response on Thumbtack, and his message was right ton point, but I wanted to shop around. I actually chose a different mover recommended by friends, but 2 days before the move, they quit. Called Tony, and he came out same day for a free in-home eval. On move day, Tony showed up with his three movers and truck... charged me a flat rate for the first three hours, including truck. The guys were professional, skilled, and respectful of both me, my family, and my belongings. They brought all the supplies they needed, including dollies with nice shock-absorbing wheels, shrink wrap of all furniture, blankets, etc. They were great. Nothing damaged or broken. My only critique was the stains on the stairs carpet... they carefully covered the railings, but needed to cover the stairs as well. Also, with 3 bedroom and full garage, I really could have used 4 movers to make it go quicker than 8 hours. All in all, I'd definitely use Tony again.

Roy was quick to respond to my questions and is very accommodating. He was even willing to lower his usual rate since my move was local. Based on my experience so far, I expect the move to go smoothly.

Thanh is the real deal. He showed up immediately and dismantled my old storage shed at 7pm in the dark. Then came at 7am the next morning to assemble the new shed which he completed by himself in about 2 hours. Everyone else wanted to use 2 men to complete the job and wanted an hourly rate. Thanh gave me a bid for the job and did a perfect job. He also left the job site clean. I would not hesitate to use him again. He will be my go to guy for this type of project.

I would highly recommend Larry's Quality Moving! Larry was extremely responsive and professional in his work. I appreciate that he took proper care and handled my belongings with respect rather than carelessly throw them around as most movers do. Larry was also very honest in his pricing- upon completion, the total for my move ended up being less than what he had originally quoted me, so he gave me the lower/correct rate instead of trying to bend the rules and overcharge me! Thanks again, Larry!

Dave was so personable and thoughtful. I wasn't quite as organized as I had planned to be, but Dave jumped right in and reassured me that he could make it all work out and everything came together. His rates are amazing for the service that is provided. I would definitely hire Dave again! (M Parks)

I recommend OC Long Distance Moving. They showed up on time and worked efficiently. Their communication with me was good, and there were no misunderstandings. They even dealt with my fussy Beverly Hills HOA. They went the extra mile and did a first-rate job.

My originally planned movers did not show up and Hector with Vazquez moving was able to put together a crew to move me into my home at the last minute. The crew was meticulous in protecting my belongings and were very careful not to damage my home moving out and moving in. Mosley is a great crew lead and you'll be lucky to have them manage your move. I would recommend them ... they are good people and did a great job!

Any time you mention you're hiring movers, the first response is always to be careful who you hire because they will rip you off. Having read all the good reviews for Safe N Fast Movers , I figured I'd give him a chance. Sarah promptly called me to go over the details of my move and he gave me a fair and reasonable quote. Actually, who am I kidding, his price was better than anyone else I called. He had a flat rate for 3 hours and an hourly rate after that. I knew he could easily run the time up but so could everyone else. On the day of the move he was early and between him and his helper they hauled ass loading up the truck. Now it wasn't a huge move but it wasn't a studio either. A 2 bedroom with dining and patio furniture was loaded up, transported (only a few miles away) and unloaded in 2 hours 25 minutes. Nothing was broken, nothing was lost and everything was where it belonged. I would have been OK if he had taken much longer. It wouldn't have seemed out of the ordinary. But Safe N Fast Movers did it fast and was done well before I expected. I'd recommend them to anyone and I'll use him any time I need a move again.

Good communication throughout the whole process, on-time day of, and overall great to work with! Our movers, Igor and Shawn, were conscientious and hardworking. Interacting with them via Thumbtack was very useful as they had detailed info re what went into their rates and it was a convenient way to do Q&A before speaking further by phone.

These guys are awesome!!! Konstantin, the manager, really knows what he is doing. We talked with him, and he asked everything even all the minor details of my moving project. Through the phone he estimated the moving duration, rate, and whole price. And guess what? He was wrong only for 29$. Pretty impressive!!! The moving crew showed up at time, and they were no less professtional than their manager. Also, they were respectful, safe and fast!!! My best moving experience ever. Thank you Orange Coast Movers!

My movers just left and requested a review as quickly as possible. I assured them that I would provide then with a 9 out of 5 star rating. Most importantly, the young men were respectful to my husband and I. I am 67 years old so I was on the young men from start to finish - making sure they were respectful of my belongings and home. They wrapped all of my furniture and assisting with packing items that were not packed upon their arrival. I did notice a small hole in the wall at the pick up address. Tight corners so I did not complain. But I did want them to know that I noticed. Other than that, my belongings arrived in great shape. I will recommend to my friend Margaret who will be moving in about 2 weeks. I informed her to request Mark and Stephen. Thanks again for your hard work. Spend your tip wisely.

All Star Moving did wonderful work for us! We presented them with a last minute high profile fitness equipment install for 6 guys at 7pm on a Saturday night. They were willing and able to accommodate our strange request, provided reasonable rates and pulled off the job without a hitch (which NEVER happens on these jobs.) Daniel was professional and helpful every time I spoke with him and I would definitely use them again and recommend them to everyone who needs a moving company for any reason. Thank you Daniel & all!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.
