I was a bit nervous about hiring a wardrobe stylist, because I really needed help figuring out how to look more snazzy and professional at work, but it felt like too much of an indulgence. It was also something I'd never done before. Megan went out of her way to make it affordable for me and also to put me at my ease. I was feeling very self-conscious about my appearance and my lack of fashion skills, but she one thousand percent put me at my ease. Honestly, I don't know if I've ever met a person with stronger social skills. We were chatting about her career and she said, "My favorite part is just making friends with people and helping them look good. I love making friends. I'd be a professional friend-maker, if I could." Hire Megan; she won't just help you pick out great clothes, she'll help boost your self-confidence.

I hired for hair during my wedding & my bridesmaids were very satisfied with the way their hair turned out. I was so happy that the stylist arrived on time & they were ready to work. They were very sweet. The only issue was that after they were finished they asked for a 15% gratuity per person after I had already signed a contract stating that the service was paid in full & that the company was to distribute money to the stylists. According to the contract everything was included AND it stated in the contract that I was not to give the stylist money. It was awkward to have the stylist upset with me & demanding money. I asked her to call her company b/c I had already paid in full according to the contract for their gas, time, & styling. It was resolved but it was awkward! I'm still very happy with the final product :)

Eric has been great to work with. I appreciate his systematic, and detail oriented approach, and his easy-going attitude. He has an encyclopedic knowledge of clothing and all things fashion, all the way from history to manufacture to style. He also is incredibly familiar with sources of high quality, high value clothing, and more than pays for himself on that aspect alone. I'm still in the process of updating my wardrobe, but it has already improved substantially. Eric has been very responsive and flexible both in terms of timing and in terms of approach. Based on my experiences with Eric so far, it feels more like a friend that I can get amazing style/clothing advice from than a paid consultant.

Shelley Golden is not only talented as a stylist but a delight too! On our shopping outing, her eye for colors and putting together outfits was spot on! Her suggestions gave me a fresh perspective from other stylists I've worked with in the past. Shelley brings in her unique experiences with textiles, her varied background as a stylist and world traveler living abroad. I highly recommend Shelley for any woman or man who's wanting to be seen in an updated way from the same old, same old.

I was set to interview for a job in San Francisco that involved understanding a very different company culture and modifying my dress accordingly. Jill researched the company and found the perfect combination. We met at a local retailer and Jill had everything picked out and ready to go in a changing room. She nailed the selections and paid incredible attention to detail- even making sure the company color (which is very important in their culture) was subtly present. After we finished Jill had a tailor ready to make the necessary alterations in just a few hours, ensuring I had everything I needed for the following day's interview. Her preparation allowed me to cut down days of shopping into a few hours while ensuring I would look my best. Coming from a different part of the country I needed someone who understood fashion and how it related to the company and the local culture. I cannot overstate how valuable Jill's services were in preparing me for an important interview, and giving me confidence knowing I would be dressed for the role.

Sana is a pleasure to work with and her photography is on point. Working with her feels like you're just hanging out with a friend because she keeps every situation at ease and comfortable. I was very impressed with the final images, her impromptu creativity on the spot and collaborative process. Needless to say, she gets the job done and I look forward to hiring her again for portrait, product and fashion photography.

This was my very first time trying a style concierge and I wasn't expecting much. I did not have any urgent need for a stylist at the moment, but was trying this service out, out of curiosity, after finding this great deal on Gilt! Boy, was I pleasantly surprised with my experience! Carrie gave me some valuable suggestions that have added life to my wardrobe. She also put together shopping boards for me ( again as I did not have any particular shopping requirements at the time). These boards are pretty neat ( and must have taken her some time to put together). She ensured that the items fit my budget and I am looking forward to donning the style suggestions given by her in these boards. I liked the fact that Carrie kept all my requirements in mind, and not once did she push me to do something I wasn't up for. It felt as if I was talking to a friend in all my interactions with her. Overall I had a great experience with her and would highly recommend her ( esp.if you are on the fence about using a style concierge!).

Working with Nicole was a dream. I would highly recommend her as a personal stylist and plan to work with her again soon. // A bit of backstory: I'm a 5'7" slender (size 2) woman in San Francisco in her late 20s. And shopping stresses me out - too many choices, not enough guidance, and I don't want to spend the time reading through Cosmopolitan, Elle etc to figure out what style works and what doesn't. Because of the above, I've worked with a personal stylist before when I lived in New York. I walked away with many nice and expensive 'classic' pieces from Bloomingdale's, none of which really fit my style and none of which I wear today. I look at that experience as a waste. I felt very nervous trying this again, but knew I needed to give it a go. My goal was to finally nail a capsule wardrobe so that I wouldn't have to think about each individual piece anymore -- without spending hours of my life on research -- so that I could just feel comfortable and confident in my look. // Working with Nicole Nicole is very down-to-earth and very approachable. In our first phone call, she asked about my goals, my body type, my favorite stores and more. She then put together a Pinterest board and sent it over to me. And here is the PERFECT example of why I'm SO glad I worked with a personal stylist in the first place... Because I looked at the Pinterest board and thought, "Oh, how dull... these pieces are so basic and too loose to accentuate my figure." But then my boyfriend (a visual designer) took a look and said, "Actually, the length of this top would accentuate your torso," and "The cropped length of these pants would make you look taller," and "The draped look makes you appear slimmer than a tight one" and so on and so forth, enlightening me to all the fundamental principles of style that Nicole had subtly understood and applied to fit my body, that I never would have picked out for myself. With that I was sold. // Once in the Mall I love the styles in Aritzia, but the last time I went to their two story store I spent three hours but walked out empty-handed and deeply frustrated. Nothing I had picked out actually worked on my body, and I felt at once helpless and somewhat pathetic at spending all that time, trying on all those pieces, and not being able to land at something that worked for my look. With Nicole, I tried Aritzia again. She had pulled out several pieces all waiting for me when I walked in -- and they all fit like a glove and were exactly what I was looking for: chic, comfortable, casual, yet polished and with a touch of class. I was so excited at finally having found the pieces that could be a base for my wardrobe that I insisted on going through the store again together, in case we had missed something that might work just as well; and found nothing. She had picked out exactly what worked for my body type, exactly what worked for my style, and I wish I had trusted her eye and thoroughness from the beginning! // In Sum If you're looking to nail your wardrobe once and for all, and not have to spend hours stressing about it, buying pieces that you ultimately return, and just love what you wear without thinking about it, then work with Nicole. Just do it. You won't regret it and you'll have hours of your life back and compliments (and confidence) galore. Thank you, Nicole, and look forward to working together again soon.

I saw great reviews from Gabby and figured she would be a reliable fashion designer who could work with both my need to find personally stylish looks that suited my frame, while adhering to a tight budget - Gabby did not come close to disappointing. Gabby was very responsive, friendly, and downright awesome from the get go and worked with my schedule and budget to ensure I got the best experience possible. I requested 4 simple things: 1. Learn how to better dress myself and find what's fashionable 2. Completely revamp my wardrobe with multi-versatile clothing that will last for years 3. Adhere to a tight budget 4. Have an amazing shopping experience Let's just say everything was checked off that list. Within 4 hours, we were able to put together a whole new look that has most definitely transformed the way I look and feel, gather a clothing set that is comfy, durable, and versatile, as well as secure my spot as that sexy new guy on the university campus. All seriousness aside though, Gabby is a compelling wardrobe consultant that deserved nothing less than a grandeur rating of outstanding.

For years, I felt like I selected the right clothes but somehow my wardrobe never seemed to work; never seemed to have any pizazz. This year, I took a leap of faith and hired a stylist, Sue of Style Rehab. This was the best decision, that I could have made. Sue arrived at my home bursting with energy and we went through my entire wardrobe. In two hours, she showed me how to mix combinations, I would never have imagined. I took pictures of the outfits, and I now I have so many options in my wardrobe that it is unbelievable. We also eliminated a few pieces, that really didn't work. My goal this year is not to purchase any new clothes, but to wear what I have. In addition to loving my new wardrobe, I boosted my self- confidence. Now when I put on an outfit I'm not second guessing myself - I know I look great! I highly recommend Sue of Style Rehab; my rating for her is 5 Plus!!

Joanna consistently delivers on finding the perfect “fit” for my style and personality. In the past, my experience with stylists was they’ve been too pushy and over the top. I would get intimidated and be forced into buying something I didn’t want or get much use out of. Joanna’s professionalism and creativity are what distinguish her here. She understands her customers and has a great talent in combining her experience in fashion with an approach that meets the person’s individual needs. I think her approach fits the SF vibe perfectly. She’s always honest and I know I’m getting real expertise and great value with her insights and selections.

My time is limited and spending hours scouring stores for “that dress” seemed a daunting and distasteful task. Jessica was not only helpful in identifying my style but was able to locate the perfect gown plus accessories that reflected my taste. It was perfect. Working with someone of Ms. Barr’s caliber is exactly what one wants in a professional stylist. I highly recommend her service, you will be delighted.

Zai and Yvonne are great listeners, are respectful of your time and budget, and are on top of the latest fashion trends. They're honest when something doesn't look the best on you, and have great suggestions for maximizing what you already have in your closet. The outcome is a wardrobe of clothes that look put together. You won't be disappointed.

I can't say enough good things about my experience with Amanda at Beyond Black. She has helped me tremendously in the fashion and shopping department, not to mention self esteem. Always professional and yet always fun Amanda has been a sheer joy and pleasure to work with. After a wonderful phone consultation that helped ease my fashion and shopping anxiety she came to my house and went through my wardrobe with me. She spent time finding out what style I was looking to go for and how I wanted to express myself. She was extremely helpful in pointing out what I could do with my current wardrobe, but the real fun began on shopping day. But even before we hit the store she thoughtfully created a Pinterest page for me and pinned a ton of looks she thought I was going for to see if she was on the right track. And was she ever! She was spot on, she has a terrific sense of knowing what you're looking for and what looks good on you. With that feedback she then spent time going through the racks herself to pick out my size in items she thought I'd like and that would create the look I was going for that we had discussed (worth it's weight in gold right there! To not have to go through those racks myself!? What a life saver she is!) Then shopping day! I felt like a celebrity- to walk past all the chaos on the shopping floor- to go back into a private, quiet and large dressing room and to try on items specifically picked out for you- what a treat! She did an incredible job picking out things I loved and that fit me. Seriously, she picked for me two pairs of jeans that fit me perfect the first time- that alone would have taken me hours sifting through the racks and trying pair after pair on. She helped me pick out and bring home a wardrobe I am proud of and adore. And like a true rock star she celebrated the turning of this new page with me with a glass of champagne in the dressing room- fabulous or what!? It doesn't end there. Once I decided on everything I was going to buy she professionally took a picture of each item and posted them on my online wardrobe. After our amazingly fun and successful shopping day she created multiple outfits I could combine with what I bought online. This was extremely helpful. For the first couple weeks after our shopping date I relied on my online wardrobe to get dressed. I now am confident when I go to my closet as I know what to pair with what based on what I'm feeling. She really helped me with the shopping anxiety I get. I can not thank her and Beyond Black enough for what she has provided me, beyond a fabulous wardrobe my self esteem has sky rocketed and within the first week after shopping with her I was approached by two very well dressed men who complimented my outfit. She's good! Even to this day if I have fashion questions she never hesitates to answer them for me and always encourages me to upload pics of new items I purchase so she can see how my wardrobe is growing and evolving and to send her ideas on Pinterest. It's a joy to work with people who love what they do and Amanda loves fashion and it is evident in her knowledge of it as well as her enthusiasm and sincere interest to talk fashion with you and give you tips. She has been the biggest life saver, I'm saying it again because it's true. I first went shopping with her for winter clothing and now I'm ready for a spring shopping spree with her. I have been extremely pleased with her work and help and look forward to continue growing my wardrobe and my self esteem with her. I highly recommend hiring Amanda and inviting her into your closet where she will change your life for the better.

The team in my office purchased a gift certificate for our lovely boss, and after speaking to a few different stylists, we chose Frances. She was a complete hit, honest, thoughtful, has a great sense of style- you want to be Frances' friend and have coffee with her everyday. She started with a closet cleaning, and an evaluation of her wardrobe- and then headed out shopping. My boss LOVED the expereince and will continue working with Frances, and has already referred her to friends.

I'm an illustrator. At one point I was commissioned to do a series of illustrations which required me to accurately depict fashions in the 70's, 80's and 90's. While I'm fairly confident in being able to do my own, independent research, I wanted the help of someone who could help me "dress" my illustrations with an expert eye. Kate was that expert. Her knowledge of historical fashion is incredible. She can look at an outfit or piece of clothing and name the time period, no matter the century or decade. With her help, I was able to dress my characters with all the proper pieces of clothing, accessories and hairstyles without simply copying styles from old photos.

I really needed a total closet makeover and wanted to upgrade my business attire. I was a little nervous about hiring someone but the process was really easy! Justine is really friendly and fun. She spent time getting to know me and telling me about her self to make sure it made sense to work together which I really appreciated. Then we went through my closet piece by piece and helped me see what worked and what didn't. It was surprisingly exciting and easy to get rid of a lot of things. She made the gaps in my closet and priority pieces to get first easy to see as well as had lots of fun ideas for things to try. She also sent over a nice follow-up summary of what to look out for, best cuts for my body and a pinterest board of style and outfit ideas. I didn't take her up on the personal shopping, but she did offer a discounted follow up session which I totally plan on taking her up on in a couple months! Really nice and easy to talk to! It feels like you have a personal stylist for a day too which is fun!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do I find a personal stylist?

To find a fashion consultant, start by browsing portfolios online. Styling is a visual art, so finding a fashion consultant who fits the style you desire is key. Great personal stylists aren’t confined to one style, but if you’re seeking a hipper, fashion-forward vibe, you’d do well to find someone with a modern portfolio, while a fashion consultant with a consistently refined style could be a better fit if you’d prefer a more conservative look. Reading reviews is also helpful for learning more about the fashion consultant. Research their training, background and years of experience. After reviewing websites and Instagram accounts, meet with the stylist in person to learn how well they fit your personality; some fashion consultants offer a free phone consultation prior to hiring. Before hiring, make sure you clearly understand their terms of service and payment.

      What do image consultants do?

Image consultants help people look and feel their best by coaching them on their clothing and beauty choices. An image consultant can be hired for a one-time occasion, such as an awards ceremony, big birthday party or photo shoot. The consultant will recommend clothing, hair and makeup to suit the occasion either using either what the client owns or taking a targeted shopping trip. For a complete fashion consultation, the image consultant will assess your wardrobe, your lifestyle, and what you hope to present to the world, and will then determine the best colors, styles and cuts for you. You can get help streamlining your professional appearance, adjusting your style after a change in body size, solidifying a new look, or finding clothing to fit one area of your life like work or weekends. Image consultants also provide closet edits, going through your clothing and paring out what isn’t right for the look you’re trying to achieve. Personal shopping is another service that image consultants provide. After an image assessment, they can either shop with you or shop on your behalf to find you key pieces you need.

      What is a fashion consultant?

A fashion consultant is a paid professional who will advise you on what to wear and how to wear it to fit your desired lifestyle or career goals. A fashion consultant can provide many services including personal shopping, closet audits, beauty consultations, style consultations and ongoing seasonal services. A fashion consultant often has a design or fashion background (although this is not required) and an innate sense of style. It’s easy to get stuck in a rut with the colors, cuts and designs we think suit us. A fashion consultant comes in with fresh eyes and provides constructive feedback to guide your style choices.

During your initial meeting, your fashion consultant will take stock of your current clothing selection and learn what you hope to achieve. They’ll identify core wardrobe pieces you need, as well as advise you how to wear items together. Many consultants create style lookbooks for their clients explaining things like exactly which shoes to wear with what pants and how to accessorize each look. Fashion consultants are a great option for people who are updating their style due to age, career changes or body changes, or who are just ready for a new look and feel. Most fashion consultants charge by the hour, with some offering packages and others working from a retainer.

      What is a personal shopper?

Personal shoppers take the pain out of having good fashion. Personal shoppers are paid professionals who work with women, men or children who need style assistance. If you are stuck in a fashion rut, are unsure how to dress in a way that flatters your body, need to revamp your image, or want a more professional career look, personal shoppers can help. Personal shoppers identify the look their client wants to achieve and purchase the necessary clothing and accessories to achieve it. The process often begins with an initial consultation with the client to understand their style goals. This consultation may include a closet “audit,” an assessment of the client’s current wardrobe to see what items can be eliminated and what must be purchased to achieve the desired style.

The client and the personal shopper can shop together, selecting items as a team. The personal shopper may also shop on behalf of the client, then bring all items to the client for a final decision. A third option is pre-shopping, where the personal shopper reaches the store(s) ahead of the client and sets aside clothing for the client to try on, expediting the whole process — a win for anyone who hates spending time in the mall. Personal shoppers can also be hired for one-time events such as weddings, vacations or birthdays. You can also enlist a personal shopper to do your gift shopping for you. Overall, a personal shopper is an investment in making good style choices.

What does an image consultant do?

Image consultants help people look and feel their best by coaching them on their clothing and beauty choices. Image consultants help clients in a number of ways. An image consultant can be hired for a one-time occasion such as an awards ceremony, big birthday party or photo shoot. The consultant will recommend clothing, hair and makeup to suit the occasion, using what the client already owns or making a targeted shopping trip. For a complete fashion consultation, the image consultant will assess your wardrobe, lifestyle and image you hope to present to the world, and determine the best colors, styles and cuts for you. You can get help streamlining your professional appearance, adjusting your style after a change in body size, solidifying a new look, or finding clothing to fit a specific area of your life like work or weekends. Image consultants also provide closet edits, going through your clothing and paring out what isn’t right for the look you’re trying to achieve.
