When you decide to book them the contract has a clause that you must tip 20%. It's mandatory. We would have tipped anyway but I just didn't like that it was in the contract. Also if you pay by credit card it's an additional 5% fee. The team arrived 10-15 minutes early and got started right away. They start by having you sign a maximum amount that the price should not exceed. We moved from a tri level 2 bdrm 2.5 bath in SSF to 2 story home in San Jose. I am pregnant so I couldn't finish packing but they offered packing services also which we took advantage of. You just have to pay for the hourly rate, of course. They also provided wardrobe boxes, wrap your furniture for you, disassemble and reassemble your furniture, which was a huge plus. They were making good time until they thought they finished loading the truck. We still had a quarter of the kitchen we wanted them to pack and move for us. They ran out of boxes due to a miscommunication between myself and the owner. So we decided to pause for lunch and they went to get more boxes. We offered to go to Home Depot close by but I guess it's in their policy that they need to provide their own boxes (unless you had them already). They didn't charge us for the lunch time. The guys are a good team. I would definitely refer them but you just need to be clear in what you need/want from them. I could have been more prepared and clearly communicate with the owner. We didn't mind paying the additional time. As long as we did the move at one time, that was all we cared about and they were able to get the job done after some negotiation.

Working with Two Friends Movers was incredible! They showed up on time and immediately started getting to work packing everything efficiently and meticulously. We hadn't finished putting everything in boxes yet but they helped us pack and brought the right equipment and extra tape and boxes. They unpacked everything at our new place carefully without damaging a single item. Payment was super easy (they accept credit cards for an extra 4%). From start to finish, it only took 4 hours to move our entire apartment. And they did this in the rain! I highly recommend working with these guys!

I hired Albion Moving and Storage for my move on my first home. They came on time (early even!) and was very responsive with any questions or concerns I had. I was stressed with working and packing, but their 2 man crew moved everything I needed so quickly. I have extremely narrow stairs in my new home and they did not make a scratch on it. I'm very impressed with their efficiency and quality of work. Definitely would recommend to anyone and will reach out to them in any future moves!

Jeff and Jesus (Dan was not available) were simply fantastic. Very friendly and exactly what we needed. They showed up on time and unloaded our Relo packing cube, bringing everything into our new apartment. They were professional (came prepared with their own tools), and handled our items with great care. They even helped put together a few of our tables which was a big time and stress reliever. Would definitely work with them again!

Felix was great! I hired him last minute to move my things from SF to an Oakland moving-pod terminal after the company said they didn't have the proper permits to drop the pod at my apartment. He and his partner showed up right on time and handled all of my belongings with extreme care, even re-packing and securing items that needed some attention. It was a tricky balancing act but Felix managed to get all of my things into the pod and secured them professionally, paying very close attention to which items were most delicate and how to distribute the weight. So so so so happy that I hired Felix, his team made a world of difference during my move and I would definitely recommend him.

Michael was very prompt and thorough in describing his services and he kept his word. I needed help packing up my stuff for a move while I was unexpectedly out of town. He put my mind at ease by packing everything up in a very organized and helpful manner. He listened to what I asked for but also operated independently. This put my mind at ease and took a huge weight off my shoulders. Definitely recommend!

Madison Kane really came through for me. I had a friend on Medi-Cal who needed to move to a memory care facility. We needed to close her apartment in two weeks. Madison arranged sales of furniture and what not that paid for half the cost of the move. She sensitively saved the items of most emotional significance to my friend – photos, letters, momentous. The items of minor value we were able to give to charity. Madison identified key items to save, if we need to sell in the future, for my friends care. She did a full appraisal of all items and managed the online postings, sales, packing, and hauling. She got us the best price for key items and conducted several sales in a very short time. All hauling was done by Hauling Mike who brought the remaining items to several local charities in two runs. I was quite impressed. They worked incredibly hard. I didn’t really believe we could do this in two weeks! She and Mike where delightful to work with. Their sensitivity to my client was touching.

I wish I could do 4.5 stars... these movers were close to perfect with just a little room for improvement. Excellent customer services takes it to 5. John and his team helped us move from Sunnyvale to San Francisco. We provided boxes and box packing materials and had some of our stuff boxed already. They packed the rest of the stuff, drove it up to SF, and brought the boxes into our new apartment. They also hauled away some items from our old apartment that we couldn't keep or donate. ~ the excellent ~ John and the team were prompt and friendly. They packed the items we needed help with quickly, and they treated our fragile items with care. They also lifted a couch over a fence because it didn't fit through the door - problem solving! And they were happy to pick up things from two stops: my old apartment and my roommate's old place. John was readily available through phone calls or texts and communicated well. ~ improvement ~ During the hauling process, our floor got scratched a bit. It was minor and no one noticed until the movers had left, so not sure how they would have handled it. Also, it would help if the movers label boxes they packed. A few unlabeled things ended up in the wrong room at our new place (not a big deal). ~ overall ~ Efficient moving service at a great price. I definitely recommend Mr J Moving.

They were very punctual and quick in packing up several large items (china hutch, curio cabinet, recliners, etc.) we had moved to Tracy. Had several items with glass and nothing was broken or compromised! I would definitely use them again! They also hauled off two items to the dumps. Very convenient, the two services they offer!

This is the second time we have used Robb & Messer Moving and Storage for our move. They could not have been more friendly and helpful. We did our move in 2 days. The first day we had them come and pack up our kitchen. They did an excellent job wrapping up all of my breakable items and ensured they were delivered without anything breaking! Day 2 they packed up all of our furniture, clothing, etc. They are very efficient and capable or disassembling furniture so that it can fit through doorways or awkward hallways. Everyone we worked with did their job with a smile on their face and made the experience extremely enjoyable for my husband and I. They also helped us unpack everything. After moving twice in the same year I could not have made a better decision to hire Robb & Messer Moving and Storage again for my second move. It took a ton of the stress out of packing and moving. I think what sums up the experience is I asked Justin if I could do anything to be helpful and he told me "just sit back and relax" Who thought moving could have some relaxation time involved? I would recommend them to anyone!

I needed to get my kitchen, bedrooms, laundry room, and den unpacked and set up in a complex move. Kristin was remarkable. She understood my situation -- which was both very stressful and demanding -- and took me under her wings. She had everything done ahead of schedule and had everything organized beautifully. She got me cabinet and drawer organizers and installed them for me. She removed all of the boxes and packing. I was so lucky to find Kristie. She is the greatest!!!!

Working with any sort of vendor, key to my experience, my "first impression" moment if you will, is communication. From first contact thru to the completion of the job, Dymtro's comm skills were first rate. Every question or concern was was responded to quickly and politely. That is star number one. Star two is for punctuality. They arrived almost to the minute of the time I was told they would be there. So between the good communication and them showing up in time, I'm already at ease about the move. Star three, professionalism, I've been moving rock and roll gear around the globe most of my adult life, so I'm no stranger to packing cubes in a truck logistically. So, when they arrived I already had a (at least to get us going) a plan for the first few rows. Dymtro listened with out any "duh" or " yeah right" attitude and let me say my piece. He then ran down the way he would get started, I knew then we were on the same page. So we were off. I watched the first few rows go on the truck and knew I would not have to oversee what they were doing. And man were they moving quick!! Star 4 is for work quality, there's nothing worse than being around people who don't like what they're doing (for me at least) that was certainly not the case with this crew, all smiles and working hard too. Also, they had included in the cost all the items needed for a move. They had ample supplies of packing blankets, tape, shrink wrap, hand trucks and dollies. Everything one would need to get the job done quickly while protecting my stuff. Star five is for value. I did crunch the numbers prior to hiring movers, and I gotta say, the difference between getting a truck on my own, and just labor at both ends was a wash. So, for literally no extra money I got a crew at both ends, a truck with all the moving supplies, and an 80 mile move with no headaches. I probably actually saved money. So, if you are considering having Dymtro do a move for you, look no further. They are 5 star, top notch, 10 out of 10, "refer a friend" good. You will not be disappointed. I hope this was helpful.

Ken and Alex were very professional and all my items were taken care of very well. What stood out to me was their communication, supplies, and truck packing skill. They were very responsive throughout the whole process, they brought their own truck packing supplies, and they packed the truck very well so no item was damaged in any way. Highly recommend and would definitely use them again.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

    • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
    • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
    • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
    • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
    • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much does it cost to move across the country?

The national average cost for hiring cross-country movers is $1,490-$2,220. A number of factors can affect the cost. One factor is the distance you want to move. For example, an East Coast-based moving company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. Another factor is how many belongings you have. Most cross-country movers charge by the cubic foot.

The type of move you want is another consideration in cost. You can have your belongings moved exclusively and delivered on a set day, or you can opt for a consolidated move, which is less expensive. In a consolidated move your belongings are stored and transported with the goods of other customers who are moving to your general vicinity during the same general time frame as you. Your belongings should arrive within a one- to two-week window, rather than on a set day. If you want the cross-country movers to pack your belongings for you, the cost will also increase.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
