About
Classical pianist and improv violinist with performance degrees from Oberlin and Peabody, and a theory degree from Eastman. Studied piano with Yoheved Kaplinsky, Robert McDonald, Fernando Laires. Trained in Taubman technique. Also teaches classical violin, hand percussion, especially Latin bongo and conga, and music theory (Masters from Eastman). I am passionate about teaching proper technique and musicianship to serious students of any age before they develop many bad habits that will hold them back later on. If the student is dedicated and wishes to play music beyond his or her current abilities, I encourage you to set up a trial lesson with me! I serve Walnut Creek (Mon), Oakland (Tu), Danville (Wed), San Francisco (Th, Sun), and Pleasanton/Livermore/Castro Valley (Fri, Sat). Trial lessons are 30 minutes for $50. Introductory rates: 45 min (kids, beginners) is $75 and 1 hr (adults, advanced) is $100.

We highly recommend Jonathan as a music teacher! Our 9-year-old son Dylan is energetic and easily distracted, but Jonathan has endless patience and keeps him fully engaged throughout every lesson. He’s an amazing musician himself, makes learning fun, and chooses perfect pieces for Dylan’s level. Jonathan is excellent with lively, active 9-year-olds!

As an adult learner, I appreciate Jonathan’s style - he is willing to meet me where I am and is flexible in his approach. I’m really enjoying my piano lessons with him.

I’ve only had about 5 lessons so far, but I’m really enjoying them! He’s patient, explains things in a way that actually makes sense, and makes learning feel less intimidating. I already feel like I’m improving and getting more confident with each lesson. Excited to keep going!
